There are subtitles, and you can mess around with the individual volumes in the Settings[>Audio] tab in the menu.
Up Voice and down the others to your pleasing.
What exactly don't you like about the quest log? Only gripe I've had with it is that sometimes it doesn't update itself, so I have to go in and activate the next objective in a quest, rather than some misc. objective it's set for me.

And the notion of declining series always comes up with every sequel of every game series. lol
It's generally just bias spawned from nostalgia.

I had huge issues with the controls (original set up for PC), and the menu's. If I had not found a decent set-up for controls, I would have scrapped it. It was immersion breaking for me. It was like I needed 3 hands, and six fingers on each hand to move about fluently (exageration of course). I died quite a bit due to having issues with the controls. Finally got it set similar to Oblivions for the main functions. Partly, it took me a while to figure out the hotkeys, and the favorites. This meant I had to keep breaking immersion, and go into the menues. ...so yes, it can take something simple to ruin a game for someone.

I also do not care for the Map, with clouds, and no main roads from the main towns. It is essential for the roads, since there are huge mountans, and it is annoying to travel a good way, and then reach a cliff, or high peak, and have to double back.
Spoiler:
It bothers me that to get some of the Shouts, you have to do quest that you would normally not do. Some of the locations for the Shouts are only accessable if you join the TG and DB.

It also bothers me that in order to do one quest, it starts you in another quest. In order to do a main quest, I had to do a Daedric Quest. Another instance on the Main Quest, I had the quest to start the TG. I didn't have to join, but it still counted as a TG Quest Completed. Same thing with the DB, just because someone told me about a kid who was thought to be summoning the DB, it counted it as a DB Quest Completed.
I was hugely lucky, as I did not have any (major quest ending) bug/glitches, until after I finished all of the Main/Guild Questlines. Ironically, that is when the bug/glitches started.

I'm not a huge fan of the controls, so I decided to change them a little to make them resemble Oblivion's a little better. What annoyed me was after I swapped 'e' and 'space' and 'r' and 'f', some of the menus and tutorial stuff changed accordingly, however others did not.

The controls have completely swapped, and the tutorial pop-ups show this, however, 'e' is still listed to take books, even though it is now space, 'f' is still listed as favourite even though it is now 'r' and the same can be said for crafting items.

It's a minor thing, but what annoys me is that half the documentation was updated, and the other half was not.

On Jeff's second point though,
Spoiler:
it did annoy me that you have to begin the Main Quest to continue with the Stormcloak Questline prior to the Battle for Whiterun, becoming Dovakiin and progressing so far that you must become Thane of Whiterun and learn your first shout. What if I don't want to be Dovakiin?

- Lockpicking is a completely useless perk tree since a level one thief can pick master locks easily.

- The map is terrible, featureless and bland. First thing I will mod when the CS comes out.

- Not to sound old and cranky but I still dislike fast travel. The carriage system plus mark and recall spells would have been perfect.

- Journal is very bland, as many others have said. Morrowind (with Tribunal installed) still has the best journal system.

- PC specific issues: massive fps loss in cities, mouse sensitivity changes with framerate, some UI aspects annoying (like the perks menu).

And my number one pet peeve:

- Quest still play follow-the-arrow rather than telling you in-game where to go. With the compass removed via the ini file I have to check my map every 10 seconds to see where I am going. With the compass left on I feel like I am playing follow-the-arrow instead of exploring and discovering, plus it ruins the interface and takes up too much room. I will never understand why the mainstream gamers prefer to follow an arrow all the time.

Something that is annoying the ever loving crap out of me is how you can't put things in your house and expect them to not be all over the floor when you re enter. For instance I was filling the topless chest in Proudspire with gold ingots and the front shelf with gems. I leave and when I come back in all the things I have meticulously placed are strewn all over the floor. This really hurts the Role playing experience.

Seriously. Fix this Bethesda.

I have to say, reading this thread has me convinced that Skyrim really is an inferior game to the previous two in the series. I love it, don't get me wrong, but I also loved Morrowind and Oblivion, and immensely more, it seems. It just appears that the developers got sort of lost, and had trouble figuring out what the playerbase REALLY wanted.

I had a conversation with my brother regarding Skyrim in comparison to Oblivion, and we had tremendous trouble finding anything Skyrim did BETTER than Oblivion. Oblivion had a better hotkey system, a better menu interface, a better magic system, more involved and exciting questlines, more interesting landscapes, tremendous and plentiful cities and dungeons, and a healthy variety of activities.

Oblivion just seemed to be a game with so much more purpose. I know that when Oblivion first come out, there was a lot of hate and rampant comparisons to Morrowind, but the consensus was still more positive than this.

Skyrim is a great game, a solid A-, 4 stars...but it's not that A+, 5 star quality we all came to expect of Bethesda.
I missed it here.

When you can easily have 100+ lockpicks right away that's kind of irrelevant, considering how rare master chests are. And I think you're wrong anyway, I can usually test three or four areas with one pick and no perks in lockpicking. Obviously it could just be player skill, but I don't think the lockpicking game is that complicated.
Wolfie wrote:Cause they dont like the feeling of being lost and havin to seach for a while to find someplace and in some cases look for hours.
1) Exploration and finding things is part of the gameplay. I remember when RPGs, FPS games and adventure games were just as much about finding where to go as they were shooting, questing and what-not. In Doom half the game is discovering how to get to the exit, now-a-days we act like that's a burden. To me it is lost gameplay... like they removed half the reason we play those games. All you do in a modern shooter is walk forward and shoot, it's too simplistic.

2) If you got lost in Morrowind it's because you didn't pay attention. NPCs always gave you directions to the quest objective and following those directions to discover the objective was part of the gameplay. In Oblivion and Skyrim they don't tell you anything, they just say "kill X" and then your map and arrow fill in the rest. It removes thought, discovery and exploration because modern gamers (no offense intended) don't like to think.

If you guys say so. I've found little things the get on my nerves, but honestly, Skyrim is probably my favorite out of all the Elder Scrolls games, and I've played them all. I try not to think of the things it did bad, I think of the huge amount of things it did right. As a huge fan of Fallout 3, I like how it's at its' core, an Elder Scrolls game with elements of Fallout 3. It was definitely worth my 60 bucks. I'm already about 100 hours in and I've still barely scratched the surface. And that's only my first character.

Complicated, no. (completely, ludicrously unrealistically) Unforgiving as Hell, absolutely. I'm someone who's been consistently good at lockpicking mini-games, and/but I think Skyrim's definitely sets the bar. While I don't need it, I think the Perk tree was a justifiable addition. And I didn't amass 100 picks until far late in the game. I suppose it's possible since the MQ all but shoves you into the Thieves Guild, but I avoided the MQ for quite a while, and so my only source of picks were the ones I bought, usually individually, from vendors. Or found in chests, after breaking five picks to get into it. I only amassed the number of picks I did because I went some time without finding any locked containers.
2) If you got lost in Morrowind it's because you didn't pay attention. Amen.
I have, however, reached somewhat of a compromise with this that puts a lot of my Morrowind rage to rest. In Morrowind, the NPCs did and didn't assume you, the IRL player, if not the PC, had a map. Many times, if an NPC's directions were deficient, one could literally look IRL on the map and find the target.
This concept, I think was kind of condensed or elapsed into Oblivion/ Skyrim. Having a compass marker in and of itself isn't an awful thing, as your character, upon having his/her map marked does know where they're going (since most of the time in Oblivion and Skyrim, the directions NPCs give are to known places).
It's when my marker points me to a particular person or object halfway across the world in a town or dungeon in which I've never been that I get [&@%!] off. So in Skyrim, once I get to said town or dungeon, I just turn off the marker.
It's a sad time in gaming, but, Skyrim makes a good compromise on that front.

I don't like that there's a hard level cap (yes I know you can go above 50, but it's difficult and those final 31 perks require unfun power-gaming to get), and that you can't get more perks.

I'm the frakking dragonborn, I SHOULD be able to get every single perk without using the console if I play the same character for like 100+ hours! So every character will eventually be the same? So what, Skyrim's not an MMO, so it should absolutely not matter whatsoever as no two Skyrim characters will ever meet! I want POWAH!! :Twisted Evil:

The only thing so far is the PS3 lag bug. :(
I hope it get's fixed in the next patch.
Mine hasn't gone to the point of being unplayable yet (at 7.3mb), but at one point after hitting 6mb, it looked like a slideshow. Didn't play for a whole day and it's better now.

There are subtitles? I've looked at least three separate times through all the menus without seeing them. You sure about that? I would have turned it on the second I started the game and was rolling in on the wagon if I could.

Agree with the other guy, the volume on voice is waaay low. The overall master volume of the game is waaay low. I have to get up and change my speaker volume to be able to hear the game, and then everything else blasts me when I leave the game until I turn it back.

I also agree with the default keybindings, and mostly how they behave inside of menus. (Why is the give single item key the same as the take all key?) Besides that, I have no ability to control my world map besides panning. My roommate's Xbox version can swivel the view, and zoom in and out. I can't do either since swiveling doesn't exist and my trackball doesn't have a mousewheel. Why can't those things have options in the menus to bind?
StingingVelvet wrote:Lockpicking is a completely useless perk tree since a level one thief can pick master locks easily.

Easily? Easily? They can do it, but it takes effort and a lot of broken lock picks. Maybe if the cursor stayed where it was when the last pick snapped off, but getting the magical elusive G spot of a master lock is no small task.

Agreed with the second point I quoted. It's definitely nice at times to be shown where to go, but having a marker constantly over your objective is a little silly. At least you can disable the markers, unlike Oblivion where you were always pointed at something...

You might consider starting a separate thread on this, because I could fill a novel with things that Skyrim did better than Oblivion. Morrowind was a better game than Oblivion, but with horrible mechanics and game engine. I can't go back to it even though it's a more enjoyable and exotic world to play in. Skyrim continued to improve the mechanics, while making a far more interesting world than that of TES4, and I'd be happy to hash out specifics, but this isn't the forum for that.

2) If you got lost in Morrowind it's because you didn't pay attention. NPCs always gave you directions to the quest objective and following those directions to discover the objective was part of the gameplay.
If you say so. My impression of finding things in Morrowind:
"The NPC told me to go over a mountain and then look around for...something."
*searches through journal for about 10 hours looking for the snippet of text that was relevant*
"Yep, that description is completely non-descriptive. Well, maybe if I wander around looking for it I'll come across it."
*five hours and 900 cliff racers later*
"I have no clue where the hell this !@&*!#&*#!& thing is."

I don't like that there's a hard level cap (yes I know you can go above 50, but it's difficult and those final 31 perks require unfun power-gaming to get), and that you can't get more perks.
Agreed, although I haven't hit the cap yet.

Didn't know that. I was busy smithing an' stuff though, so I walk around broke a lot. Spending 300 gold on picks isn't high on my to-do list :P
Though for the enterprising player, yeah, I suppose buying a crap-ton of picks isn't difficult, then.

I don't like the "Favorite menu" in Skyrim because you can end up constatnly pausing the game in the midst of a battle just to change weapon or add poison on to your weapon. i prefer the Oblivion hotkeys much more and wish they were in Skyrim.

I find that a lot of you guys make Skyrim sound like an awful game.
Sure, it may not be a direct rehash of Morrowind with new graphics like a lot of people seem to want, but hey! It's not MW3.

They do have hotkeys. Once you have an Item in your favorites, you can then assign them to a hotkey.

Unfortunatly, for dual wielders, you can not set the hotkey, or favorites for Mace right hand, War Axe left hand. At least I have not figured out how to do tat yet.

*having specific race still don't have any real effect. At least it is what i noticed. -but i heard there are small effects like an orc character can enter an orc stronghold easly but playing redguard seems no effect on game-
*bugs................
*not building stronghold or something like that -probably be a DLC-

If they're the same item, like dual-wielding elven daggers, then you can hotkey the set. If they're different items though you can't. I actually ignored better daggers for my assassin until I had two of them, so I could hotkey the pair. I was using them as a backup though, so it's not like they were my main weapons.

How do you hotkey them as a set?

I have a mace and war axe for fights, and daggers for stealth attacks.
