Anyone know how to drop a quest item on PC?

Obviously since the game is just released, there are bound to be tons of glitches, albeit hopefully small ones.

In a mini quest for the college of winterhold, I have to fetch a book. Turns out I already have it, but instead of the quest updating, it still points me to where the book was. This sounds like a common problem even in Oblivion that might be solved if I drop it and pick it up, but it's a quest item.

Anyone know how to do that? What to type? New to ES on PC.

I might suggest scanning the wiki for your current quest, and see if you can set the quest stage with the console. If that fails, look for console commands to drop an item. I know there is a command to remove an item, but I think that just deletes it from your inventory, instead of dropping it. Of course you could try removing it and then re-adding it through the console. Just look for the item on the wiki, and see if it has a reference ID.

I was sort of just brainstorming ideas, hope one helps.

I had a similar issue. I found another copy of the book in a location different then the one the guy sent me to, but he wouldn't acknowledge I have it. Presumably I need to get the book he says he needs. Or maybe the quest is bugged.

Save before you do this just in case:
Open up your console and type in 'player.inv', scroll through that with your page keys to find the ref id for the book and write it down if you need, type in 'player.removeitem {ID from 'inv'} 1', finally 'player.placeatme {ID} 1' which will spawn a copy of the book at your feet to pick up.

Worth a shot.

Bumping this to see if others have been using removeitem to remove quest items they've inadvertently looted from their inventory. Has this prevented you from from subsequently doing the quest or caused other issues?

My collection of weapons and musical instruments that I cannot drop is really growing...

Hmm well since this is bumped, is there a way to remove the quest item tag for an item? That way, you can drop and pick it up as you please. A bunch of other items are stuck as quest items and I wouldn't mind having them stored somewhere instead of just stuck in my inventory. Don't really want to delete it thought =/

I know there was a way to do in Oblivion, just don't know how to do much on the console for Skyrim.

I tried using setquestobject <##> but it did not work. It did work on the Oblivion Console, but not for Skyrim.

The only way I was able to get rid of the Quest Item(s), was to use player.removeitem <##> <#>

<##> is the items FormID

<#> is the quantity to remove, usually a 1

If you are not sure, then tell me the items, and I will set up the code for the items you need to remove.

Keep in mind, you will no longer have these items, and using player.additem, will just make them quest items again.

Ahh I won't bother you with every item I need. I know how to check inventory through console or look on the wiki, just wish I could drop these quest items.

One in particular is the elder scroll I get from the Oghma infinium quest. Weighs 20 pounds! The page suggested I sell it to the librarian at the college of winterhold, but I thought as part of the main quest, I have to go to that same place and get an elder scroll anyway, I assume it's a different one?

I tried the following to remove Fragment: On Artaeum that I accidently picked up before getting the quest.
player.removeitem {0001AD06} 1
player.drop {0001AD06} 1
player.additem {base_id} -1
And I've tried both with <> instead of {} and none of it works. So if anyone can tell me if I'm typing it in wrong or something. I even double checked the ID with player.inv.

Do not use any of the symbols, it should look like this: player.removeitem 1ad06 1
