TES and You. How The Elder Scrolls has affected your life.

Post by Anonymouse »

I was sitting in my living room a couple weeks ago when my dad asked me to go get him a hammer from the shed, and my first thought was "Oh, piggy elves!"
I was a little surprised at how TES had effected my view on a suffix of the English language, and lately I've been seeing it everywhere. I can't watch Seinfield of The Simpsons without thinking of elves. I hear the word "tumor" and I think "two elves."
ANYWAY, what I'm trying to get at is that The Elder Scrolls has been a huge part of my life, it's gotten me through long weeks, it's made me friends, and it's about ruined my eyesight. Feel free to post ways that The Elder Scrolls has effected your life; whether the effect has been minute (such as a suffix) or something big (like you met your spouse or best friend because of the games).
Thanks for reading.

The Elders Scrolls is to me what Star Trek/J.R Tolkien was to the nerds of yesteryear. I know more about the lore of the Elder Scrolls than I do about the lore of my own country (though I do know a lot about that too :P)

The Elder Scrolls has had a weirdly positive effect on my social life. My girlfriend loves to see me so excited about something, which leaves me free to spend my time in any of the lands I so choose.
I'm on a rollercoaster that only goes up

1. Thread title should be 'affected'.

2. Elder Scrolls fueled my love for medieval armour and to draw tons of them throughout early high school.

Plus I think modding Morrowind got me interested in Games Design.

Firstly as a grammar Nazi I am still not satisfied with the title formatting, but I digress...

There's not really a non-dramatic way of saying it: TES changed the way I played games, and how I considered the medium as a whole. It encouraged and inspired the curiosity for exploration and knowledge that's also a part of my personality outside of gaming. It doesn't get bogged down by the intricacies of the D&D-based RPG system, but instead is a brutal re-imagining of the fantasy genre for whom statistics is not enough. It embodies how I feel every freeform game should be, where every nook and cranny not only begs investigation, but is rich in detail.

Other games will tell the player, "There is a pretty mountain. No, you can't visit it." TES grabs the player by the collar with a devious twinkle in its eye and says, "There is a mountain. Look at it! It's beautiful. It has thousands of years of history, and you can climb it. You can explore the dungeon inside it, grab the loot, but you'll still come out with more questions than answers... but on the way you'll get distracted by a mage in a pickle, so there's that too." Immediately after this TES runs off with a broadsword while wearing wizard's robes and proceeds to chase the local wildlife. It's a hallmark for open-ended gaming and the action RPG, and it's not satisfied with the way the rest of the industry handles player freedom and incredible detail.

This all in a universe with a depth to rival Middle-earth's Arda, one that draws from the tropes and traditions of the fantasy genre but turns them into something so magically unique. One cannot simply say TES "has elves": to do so is like stating Earth "has animals". You just don't realise how vast and immersive every aspect of it is until you're so deep in it, you forget it's a fictional creation.

Its gotten me into writing a bit, and somewhat translating, i have a huge pile of character sheets, storys, tes language, verses from the books translated ie "dragons myth no more", tons of lore of the races, regions, and everything inbetween that. Ive already strive to be a game designer/ storyboard director, but tes has given me a good 3 game ideas with one of em having a sequel already.
"Ultimate Mage" Guide
I plan on making a warriors, stealth, and hybrid character guide.
