Advice on editing the wiki?

Post by Modryn »

Was unsure where to put this, so hope it's in the right place. If not maybe a mod can move it too the correct place.

I wanted to give editing the wiki a shot, but I was unsure of something. Now I've read all the articles on getting started and what-not, but still a bit confused. For example; I wanted to start an article on Dawnbreaker, and possibly the other Daedric artifacts, or artifact type weapons you find in Skyrim. Only problem is, I'm not exactly sure how I should go about doing that. I've looked at how it was done in Morrowind, and Oblivion, and the difference between those two is Oblivion seems to also have a separate page for each weapon, as well as a large page containing a list with images of the items, along with a description. I was thinking of just making a single article, but now I'm unsure.

Also, I doubt I can do a perfect job, as it is I was thinking of adding a description of the item and what it does, how it's obtained, along with a screenshot. But, reading this:
You are ready to create the page, and you are planning to add more than just one or two sentences. We would rather have red links (for non-existent articles) that clearly identify the article as an empty article, rather than create an article containing nothing but "This is a stub."
- Taken from here: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Help:Starting_New_Pages

I was thinking, should I bother at all? I don't see myself writing an essay on a single item, or am I taking it a bit too seriously? I don't wanna screw up the wiki, or add anything that would be pointless (my grammar and spelling aren't perfect either), so I though I'd ask for help here first.

Hope the post is understandable, I can be terrible at explaining situations. And again, I apologize if this is in the wrong section.

I would go for giving each item its own page. Make a page for Daedric weapons within the Weapons Catagory, add the one you were going to describe to a list on that page, then add the page describing what you know of the object: damage, magical effects, where you can get it, etc.

Also, the red links quote means that they would prefer you just put in links to any other pages that don't exist instead of making a page and putting nothing in it. For instance, if you wanted to list the magical effects of the weapon, but don't want to create a page for each one that explains the effect (if not already created), then you would just put a red link on the name of the effect instead of create a page for the effect without any info in it.

Thanks for the help and for clearing that up for me, I appreciate it.

On an unrelated note: I cannot believe I missed this section, I must be blind. Thank you to whichever mod moved this too the proper place.

You're welcome. :wink:

If you ever have a question about the wiki, you can always ask some of the wiki editors. I know that AKB is also active here on the forums, as are a few other members (who tend to come out during posts like this). I myself am looking forward to getting involved in the wiki, but once things have died down a little here and I've time to give to it. It's a great effort!

If you're unsure how to do something, you can always ask one of the Wiki "Mentors" or you could even post here on the Forums and I'll see that it's transferred over.

But from what you've said, I think you would do fine if you looked at one of the old Oblivion articles, e.g. that of Goldbrand, copied everything from there and then changed it to suit the named and significant weapon, like Dawnbreaker, that you were going to write about. Little errors can be fixed up later, but if you've got that basic format down, then that's a fantastic start.

Basically, I would change the stats so they suited Dawnbreaker, change the name of course, change the picture, and add a suiting description. If you use this article as a base though, you have a goal, and you have the code side of things already covered.

Spoiler:
<noinclude>Items
</noinclude>
The Daedric artifact Goldbrand is a one-handed katana. Goldbrand is obtained by completing a daedric quest for Boethia. The blade is similar to the version found in Morrowind. See the book Tamrielic Lore for background on this item.

<noinclude>

NewLeft
Notes
* In terms of sheer raw damage, Goldbrand is the second most powerful one-handed weapon in the game, surpassed only by Umbra.
</noinclude>
*Unlike its Morrowind counterpart, Goldbrand cannot be upgraded to Eltonbrand in Oblivion.

Good luck with your endeavours, and the wiki thanks you! :mrgreen:

I really appreciate all the helpfulness, that will help make things easier on me. Thank you guys for all the help. :)

Would have tried already, but I had a rough day. I also had an issue with my save file in Skyrim getting corrupt, luckly the game makes a back up of save files so I managed too salvage my character and progress.

Anyway, thanks again!

Don't feel the pressure, many hands make light work, you can only be doing good :mrgreen: (sort of :lol:).

I found when I started, that going to established pages and messing with code and info, then using the preview function (but never actually submitting an edit) was really helpful in learning how things worked. It helps that I have a bit of experience on Wikipedia too. You get the hang of it soon enough.

By the way, good to here that you managed to save that character file! :mrgreen: Phew! Close call hey?

Blah, I've hit another wall. >.>

I followed the steps in the Help Guide on how to make a new article, but it seems I just get redirected to this page: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Dawnbreaker#Dawnbreaker every time I attempt to put "Dawnbreaker" in the link. Am I supposed to edit that page, or am I missing something obvious?

When I look at Oblivion articles, let's say Goldbrand, it's: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Goldbrand

So I had assumed it would be the same format, e.g Skyrim:Dawnbreaker.

Really sorry if this is a stupid question. v.v

Whew, that's a relief. I'll give it some more work when I can, I need to get a better screenshot as well... And I'll see if I can add some more articles if I find the time.

Well, thank you, OblivionDuruza, Musicman, Avron the S'wit, and mxk, for all the help. Hope I wasn't too much of a bother. :p
