Random Encounters!?

Post by MichaelTh1rte3n »

Awesome thing happened as I left bleak falls , I found a free horse near a dead bandit! I also recall fighting a random frost mage here last time I cleared it. Great to see they added the random encounters and big ones! a free horse early on? yes please :)

The random things you encounter in Skyrim are very well done, I have to say. Horses and bandits and fellow travelers aside, Skyrim is pretty alive. The other day while on the road I happened across some Imperial guards toting about a prisoner, and I went up to them to see what was going. The guard told me it was none of my business and, when I didn't move, pulled his sword on me. (He sheathed it when I backed off, though.) Little things like that are just half the fun of games like this to me. It makes it that much more real!

I found a free horse next to a dead bandit once. I rode it to a nearby stable, got off, and watched as it walked back to the body of its former master!

I found that horse, too. Wasn't able to keep it, though. Met the above mentioned prisoner transport, as well.

Near Whiterun, I met some rich guy and his wife, along with some bodyguards, who were on their way to Solitude to someone's wedding. Since he mentioned that he had some expensive gifts for her, I decided to take them off him. Later on when I was in Solitude, some woman complained about her brother not even showing up to her wedding. Not sure if those incidents were related, but I thought it was pretty cool.

Another time, also near Whiterun, some Jester was standing near a wagon with a broken wheel. He wanted me to convince someone on the farm nearby to fix that wheel for him.

The random encounters are really great and I enjoy them a lot.

I don't even bother with horses anymore. Wasn't a fan of them in Oblivion, but gave them in Skyrim another shot. Bought one, went to a Fort and got off it when I saw a few enemies fighting. That stupid horse had nothing better to do than run off to join the fight, only to get killed by a Fire Atronach. What a waste of money that was...

I'm on my fourth horse. They are pretty derpy in fights, but they're worth the gold for the mobility they give you. Can pretty much go anywhere with one.
Best thing to do is try and leave your horse as far as you can from whatever dungeon/cave/etc. you're going into, while still being able to find them once you get out.

Oh I so hate homicidal horses. Yes it's great when they help but in any tough fight you just end up losing your transport :(

I've encountered somethings that made me so happy.

A group of wolves hunting a goat
A saber cat attacking a Mammoth (Mammoth won btw)
Two NPC mages randomly fighting near Winterhold (Frostbite vs Flames is really nice to watch)
Every dragon. I just love when you hear a big roar and the dovahkiin song comes up
Orcs trying to be killed, skooma dealers

I'm not entirely sure if this was random or scripted, but heading west to the road from Karthspire, I saw a ghostly man on a ghostly horse riding by. Deciding that it would be fun to follow him wherever he was going, I did so. When I got closer, I noticed that the ghostly man had no head. Coming even closer, I saw that he was called "Headless Horseman", but was unable to interact with him. I followed him for a good hour and a half, noticing that wolves attacked him but were unable to damage or distract him, and neither could I. He just kept riding along. Finally, he got to a place called "Hamvar's Rest" or something similar and disappeared. I got attacked by three skeletons (line 'em up and Yol Toor Shuul!), then either a restless draugr or a draugr wight came out of a coffin when I got close to the chest next to it. In the chest was a couple hundred septims, some junk equipment and a pretty good staff. Also, there was an enchanted helm just sitting outside.

Thats an easter egg.

That jester wasn't a random encounter. I'd be more careful around him next time.

Yep, within my first hours of playing. Walked from Riverwood to Whiterun and found a Khajiit on the road, who wanted to sell me some Skooma. I gave the wrong answer and he attacked me. I didn't stand a chance.

About that Jester:
Spoiler:
I have no clue why he showed up if he is related to the Dark Brotherhood. Except for having an Assassin trying to kill me, I had absolutely nothing to do with the Brotherhood. Heck, I haven't even figured out how to join or find them yet. But don't tell me. I want to find that out on my own. By the way, I called the guards on the Jester. :p

Spoiler:
I got Frost (horse) and he seems to be fairly good at not dying, he pretty much took on ALL of the other Stormcloaks when they stormed Whiterun and I was busy chasing random stormcloaks that had got through the lines.

I too seen this fight, pretty sweet.

Last night I was just running around and out of nowhere this guy runs up to me and gave me some enchanted boots and told me to hold them for him and that he would find me later and pay me for holding them. His title was fugitive or something like that. Then he ran away and another guy ran up to me, his title was Hunter. The hunter asked me if I seen a guy in the area and I told him yeah right over there lol. I turned around and seen the fugitive crouch behind a large rock (thought that was pretty cool), but the hunter quickly found him and ended his life. I had a good chuckle.
