Looked through the wiki and I found a mention of hired thugs, which I had the fortune of passing by (looted them for ~600 septims) and I found out the person who sent them was Colette from the College of Winterhold. The thing is, when I pickpocketed her, she was completely asleep and I only stole a health potion (17 septim worth) and I escaped undetected).
So my question is, do all the people you pickpocket hire thugs to kill you at some point? Because it seems like the thugs are more profitable than the stealing itself
Sort of annoys me though that thugs come even if you're completely undetected.
It's a random radiant event. If you steal something w/o being caught, you might find the thugs catch up to you. MIGHT. Again, it's random, and you never know who sends them.
1: The dead cannot learn, if they kill the character
2: If I take 1 potion, would hardly be sufficient to require execution.
3: Why 3? I thought nords were "honorable" pfft. Same with guards. I wish I could challenge 1 guard to legal dual and kill him.. and then the rest submit.. pfft
1. if you read the notes, most say they dont want you dead, just beat up.
2. see number 1
3. becvuse that is a steryo type of the nords, of couse not evrey single nord acts the same way.
Sudden Idea. Go to shadow stone. Get the blessing. If the thugs come, activate and walk off.
-edit- I am not sure if they will try to find you again however.

you be suprised at what you can do to someone with out evrer meeting them, like killing their chickens
It said "Teach that thief Pandamatak a lesson and kill him if you deem it necessary"
I'm not the stealing type and Colette was the only person I've stolen from in the entire game, except for
Spoiler:
that one quests in Windhelm where you're supposed to plant the ring in someone elses house
I'm absolutely sure she never detected me - I even spoke to her afterwards (after I stole the potion).
Anyways, I want to know because I'm trying to get more thugs to come after me. It's splendid how they carry their contract payments with them when they come to kill me

And then walk off?
So.. I can heal and snipe from afar? XDDD
Nope, they murder you. Had this happen to me just outside of Whiterun because I accidentally stole a book from Anise's cabin (was reading it and clicked "steal" instead of tabbing out). Worst part about it is that the guards present didn't lift a finger to help me. They just stood there or--and this annoys me to no end--ran away like cowards. And these thugs seemed to be much higher level than I was at the time...so yeah, it didn't end well. Ended up having to turn down the difficulty for the fight.
The Bounty Hunters versus You "World Encounter" sees three Bounty Hunters attack you, carrying a note marking you. There are no prerequisites, so I don't think actually stealing from someone will cause it to happen more often.

I think this is intentional. The guards don't really follow the same strict rules that the ones in the empire do, and they like watching a good fight.
When you happen to be the thane of the city (like I was) they should help you out, though.
So you may do everything secretly, nobody sees or hears you killing/stealing and after a while you find yourself attacked by some thugs payed to have you beaten up to teach you a lesson, but they actually try and kill you? Are you guys sure nobody ever saw you committing those crimes?
I was attacked by them on the bridge to the College. There were three mages in my way, so they did most of the work. :/ Didn't recognize the name on the note though.
I've stolen so many things from everybody that it's not even funny. Hell, I tried to rob the Arch Mage when he made the mistake of standing with his back to me. I regularly pickpocket random people in the street. Still, no one has tried to send any Mercs my way. If someone does, I'll bloody teach them to mess with the Winterhold College/Thieves Guild/Dark Brotherhood!

Yeah, I was the thane when this happened. I actually had one of the guards try to arrest me after I used my battle cry power to send the thugs running...
In Whiterun I walked into the tavern and was confronted. I, a level 2 khajiit with an iron dagger and no armor, stood no chance, so I had to sprint out and hide in the shadows of the Whiterun wall.(Thank Nocturnal it was night time!)
I got jumped going out of Riften by 3 Hired Thugs... they were at least several levels above me and I had to run back into town. They followed until I entered the Inn - upon exiting they had disappeared. Don't know if the multiple zonings prevented them from further pursuit and I have no idea who sent them since I took the example of the great King Arther and RAN AWAYYYY....
