Oblivion- Independent Thevery Ranking

Post by Chris Est69 »

I started to fence a load of items to push me up the ranks in the theives guild. I have just sold on the stolen items for a good 800 gold therefore have jumped up 4 or 5 rankings in one go.

However when I return to S'Krivva the game does not move me up the ranks, it says you have fence over 100, 200, 400, 500 gold & so on & that I should return to S'Krivva as she has something for me, when I do she says nothing & I dont advance in the guild, anyone help?

You must complete quests to advance in rank. The reason you fence things is so that you can gain access to those quests.

The intended order of things is:
  • 1) Fence certain amount of gold -- you will be told to goto doyen.
    2) Doyen will have quest for you -- complete the quest.
    3) Reach next fencing goal -- go back to doyen for next quest.

You have just been fencing thus far, and not doing the quest part. So to advance you need to go complete some quests. The good news is you probably won't need to fence much more in the future, since you have already done it.

Its a good idea to fence whenever you have stolen items, until you reach 1000 gold fenced.

Very true. That way soon after to comple a thieves guild quest, you receive the message that the doyen might have something for you.

Yeah... they didn't set those fencing goals high enough. I think I completed my final fencing goal before I finished the 2nd or 3rd quest.

That's cause you're a hard core thief like I am, lol. I did the same - had thousands in stolen stuff by the time I met my first fence.

You work for your gold, I work to steal it.

If you sell common stuff like candlesticks and silverware, then the goals are reasonable. But one visit to Bruma castle and you have the whole "independent thievery" subquest solved.
There once was a Prince named Mehrunes
Whose buttocks sounded sonorous tunes
‘Twas an odiferous song
People sang before long
They had enough of his full crescent moons.

My favourite way of getting to the 1000 gold fenced and cutting straight to the TG quests, thereby getting them done one after another without any boring fencing in between, is to do the Collector Quest. Once Umbacano is dead, go back and steal all the Ayleid statues you sold him. Sell them to a TG fence. I suppose my char likes to do it that way because she is really an assassin, and despite her top notch Sneak,Illusion and Security sometimes has to resist the urge to kill sleeping NPC's whose pockets she has picked. Nevertheless if she is doing TG she plays by the rules of no killing on the job. Except where the Gray Fox tells her it's OK that is.
