Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
I was wondering what the benefits are to paying someone to train you in a skill you need as opposed to learning it yourself from combat other than paying being faster. Is there any other reason?
I played Oblivion and i rememer paying for it i just can't remember why!

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
i haven't really been into power gaming/efficient levelling, so my answer might not be that useful to you if you're looking for info on game mechanics. I'd imagine training is a very clean way of getting your skills up, ie train the required skill without risking other skills increasing by accident (eg being hit and gaining some armour proficiency)Racetrack wrote:I was wondering what the benefits are to paying someone to train you in a skill you need as opposed to learning it yourself from combat other than paying being faster. but for me training is a way of getting skills up i wouldn't usually use that much (crafting in Skyrim would be amongst these i think), or would find less fun to level up (lol speechcraft/mercantile..?).. also it's the best way of boosting a combat or 'useful' skill up if you find you're a bit under skilled for a challenge. I have already had the Khajiiti upskill my sneak, and a blacksmith make me better in his craft

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
Just like in Oblivion (and like Mattbott already said), IMO it is best used for getting skill-ups to skills that progress slowly (with your playstyle), but which you need (with your playstyle). For example, I usually use bow only for (initial) sneak attack to take low-health enemies down before starting close combat. That means that archery goes up slowly, but I would really benefit from higher skill and higher bow damage -> I buy training, time to time.Racetrack wrote:I was wondering what the benefits are to paying someone to train you in a skill you need as opposed to learning it yourself from combat other than paying being faster. Isn´t it that way, that your Skill and your Mastery-LV is seperated? Means you can collect Skill in Each "Tree" till 100, but you can learn the Spells from the "Tree" just if you have the necesarry Mastery-LVRacetrack wrote:I was wondering what the benefits are to paying someone to train you in a skill you need as opposed to learning it yourself from combat other than paying being faster. I played Oblivion and i rememer paying for it i just can't remember why!
For Example (Destruction)
Novice: Spells like Flames, Frostbite, Lightning....
if you learn the next Level Apprentice you unlock the Destruction-Spells for that Mastery-LV like Flamecloak, Ice Storm and so on...
I think it works with that principe, cause if you train at Feralda for a higher Mastery-LV she offer´s new Books.
(By the Way: In Dragonsreach is a Mage in one of the siderooms of the big hall, offers every spellbook you able to learn at this moment)

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
No, with spells, you can cast just any spell cheap enough to your magicka points, no matter about your level or perks. The basic five-step spell perks work in that way, that they halves the cost of the spells belonging to specific grade. For example, Novice level Healing spell cost is halved, if you choose the Novice perk in Restoration. AFAIK, the spells also get cheaper the higher level your skill is.h45e wrote:Means you can collect Skill in Each "Tree" till 100, but you can learn the Spells from the "Tree" just if you have the necesarry Mastery-LV

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
Is a character with destruction/conjuration in one hand and a sword in the other a viable build at higher levels? I tried to make a shield mage previously but ended up just dual-wielding spells for the 50% stumble.
I'm really just looking for a magic/combat character. So really any build/ideas you guys have would be great.

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
I have another question, unrelated to the magic subject.
I know several words of power and killed many dragons (about 30 words/20 dragon), however, I havn't learnt any shouts that aren't related to the main quest. Am I missing something that I'm supposed to do or should I just keep on slaying dragons?

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
Is becoming proficient with archery a "must-have" skill?
If so, that counts me out, because precision control is not one of my real-world skills. I couldn't perform archery well enough to hit the broad side of a bear in Oblivion.

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
It isn't a necessity, but it helps. Just wading into melee combat alone without softening your targets with Archery first might not be advisable. With a follower though you shouldn't be any worse off. There are certainly days when I disregard Archery alltogether to no ill effect. Is becoming proficient with archery a "must-have" skill?

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
That's a load off my mind, thanks.
Your comment about followers leads to another question: are they any better, behavior wise, than they were in Oblivion? I hated having any of them around, because I always wound up killing them by accident. If they've not improved it any, then I'll be rotting in jail or paying bounties all the time. :\

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
It depends I guess, whether I'd call them better. Better than Oblivion by all accounts, but depending how you like to play, that may not matter much. They'll sneak when you do, and won't engage until either you do, or an enemy is attacking them/ you. They're also damn near invulnerable, but still susceptible to friendly fire. You can't give them direct orders to 'stay back and used ranged' or 'stay close and use melee' sadly. Rather a step back from Fallout.FuzzyMage wrote:That's a load off my mind, thanks.

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
Dang. :\ I guess I'll just try not to get any followers, because I prefer a "lone wolf" style of playing.
Thanks for the answers, Akiraka.

Actually, sometimes mage followers can be useful.FuzzyMage wrote:Dang. :\ I guess I'll just try not to get any followers, because I prefer a "lone wolf" style of playing.
Thanks for the answers, Akiraka.
At least, if you're not very vulnerable to several fireballs to the face due to misfire on their behalf.

The only other solutions are to get pelted with more arrows to 'reset' the stuck-in-character animation, level up, or just keep waiting. It's a very frustrating bug, and can happen with Ice Spike as well. It seems to result from the projectile getting stuck on something like armor, a weapon/ quiver, but not the character proper... so it never gets the 'okay' to go away. Hopefully it gets fixed in the next patch. Good luck.

Re: Beginner's Questions About Skyrim
So I just finished the mission with the Foresworn in Markarth. I go kill a spider for a scholar in some dwemer ruins. I go to his lab and take a gem that was labeled take (not steal), but the guard runs up and attacks me and then says he'll let me go. I go to the Jarl's room and suddenly everyone attacks me. Where did I go wrong?
Do you mind? I'm doing the fishstick. It's a very delicate state of mind.

Does Resist Fire / Frost / Shock have a cap like resist magic? Or is it possible to be immune to Fire / Frost / Shock, I couldn't find anything online saying anything about it.
