Bound weapons and weapon skills

Post by j31c3n »

I can confirm that the use of bound weapons does raise weapon skills. Someone somewhere had a question about this. I couldn't find it so I made my own thread! Problem solving.

I think his question was actually more along the lines of "do One-Hand Weapon Perks (i.e. damage boots, power attack Stamina drain reduction) work with conjured swords. But, if using conjured weapons raises the relevant weapon Skill, it sounds promising.

One Handed and Bound Sword Testing

- Damage (as reported in inventory menu) effected by One-handed, not Conjuration. An increase from 75 to 80 One Handed netted +1 damage.
- One handed critical perk for swords works with BS.
- An extra point in the basic damage increase One handed perk netted +2 damage (23 to 25, same as a plain orcish sword) at 80 skill.
- With the cheaper power attacks perk, it costs 30 stamina for a BS power attack. For comparison, ebony sword cost 50, daedric dagger 40, and iron dagger ~30, also with the perk. I guess this also raises some interesting questions about power attacks between weapons.
- BSs can be dual wielded; haven't tested those one handed perks.

Edit: Don't have the perk points or Conjuration skill currently to test the BS specific perks, but if I gain some levels tonight I will. Dual wielded, fast, criticalling, low stam cost, banishing, soulstealing BSs GO!

Capital stuff man. Wow, it sounds like combining BS and 1H Perks could be pretty gnarly.

Their base damage is very low, however, and can't be increased with smithing. At higher levels, bound swords become pointless.

True. They do have the Mystic Binding Perk, though I wonder how great the boost actually is.

About that. With Mystic Binding, I got about a 50% damage boost (28 to 44). The total should increase to say 50 or so at 100 1H skill (this is with damage increasing perks and enchants running). That's a decent number, but it doesn't approach the output of a well upgraded, enchanted 1H weapon. Also, the dual wield perks work with BSs (presumably, other bound weapons use the standard perks as well). The only scenario I see upgraded bound weapons really shining in, is against foes that summon heavily, since banishing is a Conjuration perk whose effects I haven't seen duplicated elsewhere.

Yeah, 50 at 100 One-Handed sounds rather low. Within their magical context, though, considering that someone that committed to their use probably has access to all those nasty Spells and such, making them too strong would probably upset game balance pretty quick. Their weightlessness and lower power attack Stamina drain definitely play into (and for) a mage's Attribute progression, too. I can think of one instance already where the banishing effect would be very convenient, but at first glance I thought it might otherwise be a little gimmicky.
