? with Atronach Stone and also fighting dragons as pure mage

Post by Hippeus »

Does this mean it has a chance to absorb dragon breath attacks or are the dragon breath attacks under elemental resistance and not magic based? Also what is some good strategies for fighting dragons with a pure mage?

I'm playing as a pure mage and find that the Destruction perk Impact will stagger a dragon as well, so I usually hide under some sort of bridge or awning and cast dual-fisted firebolt at it until it dies.

Being under the bridge/awning, especially if it is wide, is probably the most helpful as the dragon cannot land on you or get close enough to bite you, so it can only hover or land on the ground a certain distance away from you, giving you perfect shots with ranged magic. Plus if they start shouting at you, you can backpedal and put the structure between you and it.

I would not recommend trying to fight one out in the open.

It is good to have cover to duck from breath but if you have not as a mage always try to move around, also some conjured up atronachs or undead are helpfull. If he is in the sky the flame atronach is good because he can shoot him quite well. Also stagger from impact is nice(as said before), if you also have the pushback shout a landed dragon sometimes doesn't even breath once ;-).
Currently I have the atronach but if the dragon breathes I don't look normaly on the magicka bar, sry, maybe next time I should watch^^.

I did go up against a dragon with the Atronach Stone active once, and I noticed that the Magicka bar did go up, but not as much as I had expected. I think the dragon's breath is a mix of magical and physical damage. Could be wrong, though.

I'm pretty sure their breath is fire or cold damage, depending on the type of dragon. I'm currently playing a Dunmer (50% fire resist), who also has a pair of boots with 40% fire resistance. Standing in a fire dragon's breath barely damages my character.

Aren't their breath power words? If so, I don't think it's deffendable by wards... Just heal when he's attacking you, and run around him when he's on the ground. summon an atronach or something, always try to keep the dragon occupied with something else.

I play a pure mage with the Atronach stone.
Yes it does absorb some of the dragon breath.

Slightly off topic, but is elemental damage distinct from magic? I'm just thinking with mages and the Breton resistance. If I cast flame or firebolt am I doing a magic spell or an elemental effect? I would have thought it magical but the effect is elemental so ...?

Aye Im wondering the same

I play a Breton myself and with only 100 hp, I have stood in multiple dragon breath attacks and was fine

So I think we resist it

I've 200 HP and take some damage each frost run. My 100 SP dies practically instantaneously though. Still safer than trying to stick a knife in a grumpy lizard's eye of course.

As a mostly pure mage, when fighting dragons I use the opposite elemental shout and spells. That's the best bet, besides always staying far away from frost dragons. those [&@%!] will do the "eating you and throwin you around" animation all to often.

As I increased in level, I played more and more as a mage, with a certain quest dagger for close encounters ;) My best advice is use a high level conjuration spell, a horse or a companion to draw their fire (or frost :P) while you cast either fire or frost spells at it. The augmented damage perks are obviously completely necessary. Make sure to check as you level up for new spells, as these can seriously save your bacon.

Here's a tip: Under the college of winterhold, there's a forge called the Atronach Forge. Bring One Deathbell Flower, one Void Salt, one Ruined book and One Mammoth Tusk to it, and put it in the gold box in front of it. It'll turn into a spell tome for a Storm Atronach, which is seriously powerful, and will be effective against both frost and fire dragons.

I play with the Apprentice stone because I'm a Breton, so I already resist magick. The 100%+ magicka regen comes in handy.

How does one legitimately find that recipe? I wondered around there for hours looking, even solving that unmarked quest, and never found so much as a hint.
