Picking Master level locks at low levels?
It seems many dungeons have master chests in them, no matter your level. I was able to pick one at level 7. Mind you in took a little hard work, a little luck and a ton of lock picks! But has anyone else picked them at low levels? And do you like that they can be picked so early?

Yes I absolutely love that they can be picked at low levels. That makes so much more sense to me than not even allowing me to try because the level is higher than my level. If it tells me its a master difficulty, and I have a level 5 lockpick skill, I should be aware that I am probably going to fail. But if I want to take the effort to try it and succeed, I should have that chance.

I confess I still don't find the lockpicking as easy as Oblivion. Anything tough I usually just skip.

I love the Fallout style lockpicking. It seems much more immersive and realistic, and I love that we get a chance to pick master locks at a low level.

The one in the building the Jarl is in? I picked that one too. Took like 15 lockpicks, but I got it.born2beagator wrote:I picked one on a display case in whiterun.

It's like Oblivion's system, you get good at the mini-game and you can pick any lock. It's just a little harder because the picks break more easily, IMHO.

It seems like the lockpicks have their own hidden durability. For instance if the pick is in the wrong spot and it starts to vibrate when you turn the cylinder (but doesn't break), it seems to break more easily on subsequent attempts.OblivionDuruza wrote:It's like Oblivion's system, you get good at the mini-game and you can pick any lock. This feels true at least in my experience. I've never had a pick give me more than 2 vibrations before a break.enyamerT wrote:It seems like the lockpicks have their own hidden durability. I know opinions were split on the two lock picking mechanisms, but I much prefer Skyrims. In Oblivion there was no testing necessary. I was excellent at the minigame, I could open everything without ever breaking a pick. I'm good at Skyrims minigame too, but I still break picks all the time on harder locks.

Re: Picking Master level locks at low levels?
I had 30 picks in a dungeon, with 15 skill in lockpicking. By the end of that it was 17, and I had 2 or 3 picks left. Lol

I've had Lockpicking go up over two levels after picking an Expert Lock. That was around the mid-teens as far as Lockpicking level.

Re: Picking Master level locks at low levels?
I picked one on the final DB quest by saving and repeatedly reloading.
I had 15 lockpicks and 23 lockpicking, and I think it took at least 6 reloads after running out of picks. I like that they can be picked early, but it seems terribly luck based. Also, this may be slightly off topic, but one wonders why the lockpicks made of easily broken crap in Skyrim. They don't make every weapon out of iron, so why don't they make rarer, more expensive lockpicks made of better stuff that take longer to break or something?

Re: Picking Master level locks at low levels?
Of course I can pick locks that are really hard - and if I [&@%!] up, it's my fault. It's going to be really difficult, and I'll probably waste all my picks on it. And that's a billion times more realistic than "Sorry, you don't have a high enough skill level".

yea, i have seen some master and expert locks in skyrim and everyone one of them has eaten 10-15 of my lock pick. but the treasures inside those chests did indeed become mine
