Morrowind fans!
As morrowind fans tend to be more critical, based on your experiences, how is skyrim in comparison to morrowind? I have never played morrowind, so I can not answer this.
My apologies if I misused the word "than" in the poll. I can never remember the then-than rules.

Re: Morrowind fans!
First off, I completey disagree with the first statement:
Obviously from a technology standpoint Skyrim outclasses Morrowind and Oblivion by far. Gameplay is better than Oblivion and Morrowind in many areas, particularly combat. However, there are areas of Oblivion and Morrowind that I would probably say were better, for instance, I still prefer Morrowind's setting, environment and architectural styles (simply because they have a nice charm about them), as well as the huge variety of factions.
But to put it plainly, I think it's too early to make comparisons, but more importantly, it's not right to make comparisons. Just like with Oblivion and Morrowind before this, I see each game as a different Scroll, and each one a great experience and a different experience in its own right.
Morrowind fans are not more critical, I've seen plenty of Oblivion fans who are highly critical of Morrowind, and vice versa, and I know many who are fans of both games, as am I.Thunderstruck elf wrote:As morrowind fans tend to be more critical

True. No offense intended, ignore the more critical part.

None taken, I just thought I'd point it out before someone else did. Hope I didn't sound too snappy

Skyrim's better than Morrowind. The world didn't completely draw me in like Morrowind has, but the immersion levels are sufficient and the gameplay is simply fabulous, so it's better, yeah.

Re: Morrowind fans!
It'll take many months to figure out what Skyrim's main faults are, but it is pretty clear, even this early, that Skyrim definitely has a better atmosphere than Oblivion's 'Walmart greeter' approach to npc interactions and its immersion is above all (I found myself hanging out with Khajiit for some time before I realized I wasn't doing anything
)

Re: Morrowind fans!
From what I've played it's better, but not by a huge amount. Of course it could be too early to tell but so far it seems that way.

Re: Morrowind fans!
I disagree. Oblivion fans' aren't critical, they just whine about Morrowind's "slow pace".Morrowind fans are not more critical, I've seen plenty of Oblivion fans who are highly critical of Morrowind, and vice versa, and I know many who are fans of both games, as am I.
From what I can tell of Skyrim so far... I like Morrowind better. That, however, should take nothing away from Skyrim. Though I suppose you're asking to gauge Morrowind only.
At this point I'm not convinced any Elder Scrolls game will come out ever again that will just "get it" the way Morrowind did.
You really, really, really need to play Morrowind.
Morrowind's tutorials were better, the booklet was better (for those who can actually READ). Classes and races had clear synergy that was profound even at low levels (maybe especially at low levels) but wasn't game breaking, and also wasn't binding. (It was not overly difficult to play against type). It doesn't hold your hand by any means, but it also doesn't let you go in blind the way Skyrim does. Skyrim alleviates you the pressure of having to decide on a Class at all, of course, but, I almost don't like that.
The gameplay overall was, and still is, top-tier. If you can "stomach" to-hit rolls, there's really nothing like it. Atmospherically, I can already tell that Skyrim will never draw me in like Morrowind did. On one hand due to Skyrim's, IMO, terrible interface (even Oblivion's was better) and also, though, just my age (I was a teen the first time I played Morrowind so I think that helped with the immersive-ness).
If you don't like to read, Morrowind's conversations won't interest you at all though. It'll lose a lot of immersion there. Morrowind, however, contains a grossly larger mass of lore and information, though. So if you do like to read, or even just aren't opposed to it, the 'dialogue' in Morrownd is like reading your favorite novel.

Re: Morrowind fans!
Morrowind is and will always be my favorite elder scrolls game but so far skyrim is biting on its heels (and morrowind's running with the boots of blinding speed...I had to do it). Skyrim is MUCH better than oblivion in my eyes, and I've only acquired one artifact so far (which is my favorite part of ES games). The world is so beautiful and I just love that the NPCs actually feel like real people.
Oh yeah and climbing mountains is really easy in skyrim

Re: Morrowind fans!
obviously, none of us have played it that much.
i think for morrowind fans it's hard to sound objective while not coming off as Stereotypical-Oblivion-is-a-terrible-sequel troll.
how i view it: Oblivion was a semi-next gen rendition of Elder Scrolls. they took all of the underlying concepts, added a sheen to them, with voice acting and scaling based combat rather than to-hit based combat. the AI package honestly doesn't mean much other than NPCs are in places that you have to look up on UESP at certain times of the day, or they die because they went to weird places for weird reasons. im not saying the game was rushed or bad, but to me, it felt like Oblivion jumping on the opportunity to bring Elder Scrolls to a new set of systems to a larger audience. at the end of the day, besides level scaling, combat differences, and presentation, there wasn't that much separating the two, and for every thing that got improved, others got taken a step back.
Skyrim feels like a different generation of game, however, much like going from say, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance to Dark Souls or something. not to downplay the overall goodness of Oblivion, but it feels like the sequel that was intended, the sequel that should have been. there are a few things i dont like, sure, but overall every concept has been improved, completely reimagined, or removed for the better, i would say. the biggest change is that i am having fun playing the game as is, instead of worrying about the ******* level efficiency. even then, there is still challenge, you cant play like an idiot, but you dont have to max out endurance first, worry about athleticism screwing up your build, etc etc etc.
objectively, yes, the environment is more or less typical north european low-ish fantasy etc, but subjectively, to me, they did a better job at making a traditional concept interesting than Oblivion did with its more generic high fantasy themes. oblivion wasnt an ugly game for its time, but it didnt have any areas that really stuck out in my mind. skyrim on the other hand has a completely artistic touch to the world and cities that reminds me of exploring morrowind for the first time. you remember features, they flow well, they are unique, and whether its setting foot in markarth's innards or looking out over the steam vent ponds below the riften 'plateau', it seems like there is more of a purposeful design here (probably has something to do with the fact that its 100% handcrafted, lawl).
being less long-winded, i would say that this is a game that will keep me interested for a couple hundred hours, not a "do the quests and get kind of bored with the environment and dungeons" like Oblivion or Fallout 3.

I think the OMG new ES game effect won't wear off for awhile, so Ill wait for reviews until then. But, would you guys say that what MW is to OB, as OB is to SR? For example, simplifying complex game mechanics, less RPG more action/adventure type game? What is leveling like?

Re: Morrowind fans!
Leveling is completely different. Instead of gaining a level after 10 points of skill increase each skill increase has experience points. The higher the skill, the more experience on on increase. I've gotten a level after ONLY increasing my sneak 3 times (I think my skill was in the low 70's when that happened)

What? Uh... I don't think so? Coming from someone who hates Oblivion, probably absolutely not. But, would you guys say that what MW is to OB, as OB is to SR?
IMO, Morrowind is to Oblivion what apple pie is to apple-flavored ice cream or something (that is, a labor-intensive, fairly nutritional treat as compared to a similar-tasting, nutrition-less knockoff aimed at little kids). Oblivion is to Skyrim... like Bruce Wayne is to Batman lol.

Actually, those are pretty good comparisons...
Morrowind's only fun if you put the time into it instead of rushing through it and Oblivion is the instant gratification with a lack of depth and flavor
Oblivion is the generic party boy to Skyrim's gritty, hardened persona which may be borderline insane...in a good way...

Morrowind is my favorite game of all time, so its way too early. I will say that Skyrim has a dirty, used feel to it that i like. I also like the big change in leveling and want to see how this ends up.....i also just got batted one mile by a giant. Wish i had some scrib jelly right now..........
