Two handed vs dual wielding
Two handed vs dual wielding
With 2 one handed weapons, you can be more versataile, can improve and add magic to two weapons, poisons etc.
Is there a reason to use two handed at all?

You get different perks for two-handed weapons, as opposed to one-handed ones. I'm pretty sure a massive axe would do more damage then a smaller one to...
They will no doubt be equally balanced. Each having obvious benefits over the other.

Re: Two handed vs dual wielding
The Dual Wield perks make your attacks (presumably) 40% faster, and gives a 50% damage bonus to power attacks.
The Two-handed perks give a good chance of critical strikes for swords, bleeding damage for axes, (presumably) make maces ignore 75% of armor ratings, and give massive bonuses to power attacks.
And two-handed weapons generally have a higher damage than one-handed ones.
It's a choice between quickness and versatile combos of enchantments and poisons, or having a single weapon to enchant/poison with a lot of sheer brutal force.
I think it balances out quite nicely.

You can block with a 2-handed weapon, but not when dual-wielding.

But you can still use 1 hander + shield, if you really need to block

Think of it as burst damage (two handed), or more consistant damage for dual wielding.

Lets not forget the Two handed exclusive 'Sweep' perk that lets you strike multiple enemies in front of you at the same time

Also, from an RP standpoint at least, 2-handed seems more like a "warrior" style of fighting where as a duel-wielder is more likely to be a rogue, etc.

I always get the beserker vibe from dual weapons (outside of daggers), some of the one handed weapons are massive

Re: Two handed vs dual wielding
Imagine in oblivion, someone carrying two daedric longswords at once.
That seems pretty absurd, but hey, who am I to judge?
One handed weapons are of course much quicker, as they are smaller. The bigger, heavier weapons will be harder to get back to starting position, making the process way slower.
It all comes down to what speed you prefer.
Of course, I prefer bows, so I don't go close at all. And unless you can dual wield Bows (which would be totally rad) I will never be able to elaborate.

Because there's no fun to be found in being normal.

I'm sure it will be fairly balanced, but I don't really care about that. Since it's not a multiplayer game I couldn't care less for one playstyle giving you a slightly better damage ratio compared to another. I you like the way one of them feels or looks better, go for it!

Re: Two handed vs dual wielding
The primary difference will probably one of damage dealt in a single blow versus capacity to deal multiple hits in the same span of time. More testing will yield better results, but I'm sure that different combos and strategies will be more effective against different foes, so mixing it up between the two might prove beneficial, and it will at least let you know which you prefer.
Re: Two handed vs dual wielding
I hope that they power up 2 handed. Because 2x1 handed means 2x1 poison and 2x1 enchantment...

Re: Two handed vs dual wielding
Trust me so far I've been playing the games switching between dual wield and two handed, its simply a matter of preference. Do you want to 1 hit kill most enemies but have a long wind up that misses once in a while, or give them a several weak yet accurate, fast hits?

Re: Two handed vs dual wielding
i wouldn't characterize dual wielding as accurate. the cross slash and power attack for dual wielding require good timing and seem limited in reach, even with swords.

The "Kill animation" for two handed has been great too. I've been beheaded twice.
