To be fair, we still haven't seen the PC version and we already know the XBox360 version suffers from certain texture issues when installed to hard drive. The beauty about the video that's doing the rounds is that it's completely dispelled any worries that the game would look 'bad' compared to the XBox360 version - and the footage does seem quite a bit better than the unofficial leaked footage that's going round so I think owners of all three systems are going to be quite happy with their purchase this FridaySuperNull wrote:It all makes sense now. I don't think it went that far but if it's true that MS will refuse any game that launches on PS3 first or has less content then other versions anything is possible.SuperNull wrote:It all makes sense now. It never rains but it pours
I've just received word that folks in a certain guide related website's forum are discussing TWO more fantastic looking PS3 videos - one is 05:39 and the other is 06:38.
Both these videos also highlight the increased colour saturation in the PS3 version of the game.

What? are you saying I shouldn't install this game on my 360 Friday? I've never heard of installing a game on 360 making performance worse.Pobatti wrote:we already know the XBox360 version suffers from certain texture issues when installed to hard driveSuperNull wrote:It all makes sense now. ok, so did a little research, and some people are saying this is only happening on the pirated version. So I guess unless Bethesda makes a statement we won't know for sure until Friday. I guess I'll play from the disc first to be safe.

Skyrim's graphics have improved tenfold from Oblivion, and you're worried about them anyway?

Re: Skyrim News!
Bro, PS3 plays smooth. Every video I've seen looks aces and everyone I've spoken to, who has played it, says it's fine. The "slight stutter" people were talking about was when it autosaves.. this also happens on the 360 version.Tesknowitall wrote:If only the ps3 played smooth like Xbox.... Either way. Skyrim is Skyrim. Be happy with the version you have.

Ive seen PS3 Oblivion lag after 50+ hours, but rebuilding the database and a fresh install corrects it. Sony says the PS3 clears the cache on power down, but I don't buy it.Tesknowitall wrote:Hmm. Re: Skyrim News!
There is no real cache on a PS3 in the way that there is on the XBox360. There is an internal cache for the PS3 web browser, but that's rather small and is only applicable to the browser. Bethesda games usually use a swap file instead.Lynx2069 wrote:Ive seen PS3 Oblivion lag after 50+ hours, but rebuilding the database and a fresh install corrects it. The swap file usually ends up in the area of your XMB where your installed programs usually reside. I remember Oblivion generating a rather large file there myself, and this did not get deleted when the PS3 was powered off.
Since all the 'valuable' information you want to retain is usually stored in your saved game, it's pretty safe and easy to manually delete that file since it will just be rebuilt when you start playing Oblivion again. I would imagine it would work the same way in Skyrim, although it may be difficult to tell which is the 'install' and which is the 'swap file'.
Also, your comment about the game lagging after 50 hours caused me to recall a bug that was present in Oblivion - the glitch of doom - which would eventually cause the game to require more and more system resources, start lagging and eventually crash altogether after a certain number of hours played or saves made. That was a known problem across all version, and was not exclusive to the PS3.

Re: Skyrim News!
By PS3 database I mean through the debug menu. It clears the internal file structure and rebuilds it. The database becomes cluttered when it contains refrences to data not there. It will begin to slow the XMB if left unchecked.
Are you sure that there isn't a cache, because for example, Resistance 2 caches on start if you play anything other than Resistance 2.

Re: Skyrim News!
I've never had an issue where a game took any longer to load merely due to another game having been played in all the years I've been using my PS3. What I have noticed, as I explained above, are the generation of game data in the 'installed programs' part of the XMB - especially on games that either have no install option at all (Oblivion) or installation is not mandatory.Lynx2069 wrote:By PS3 database I mean through the debug menu. Oblivion generates a swap file when it's first loaded - and updates this file while you play. It can end up really rather large, but leaving it alone can cause subsequent re-boots to be faster. Deleting this file only appears to cause Oblivion to need to re-cache data back into that file, slowing down the boot process.
Sometimes, errors can occasionally creep into that cache file. I've had more than one instance where the game became very slow and glitchy - and deleting that file solved the problem.
Ultimately, that's all a cache is - a file that can be used as additional memory (quicker to load from than blu-ray or DVD) and the XBox360's cache (upon thinking about it) is potentially exactly the same. The only real difference is that the XBox360 uses a system cache (like a PC uses a page file), whereas the PS3 uses swap files individually set up by the games that require them.
Playing a different game will not impact an individual swap file on a PS3, but since the cache is global (think 'pagefile.sys') on the XBox360 the system would have to re-allocate the cache to accommodate the game being played at any given time.
The downside for PS3 owners is that these large files can accumulate quite quickly, filling up the hard disk if you play a lot of different games and only have a small drive.
