PS3 vs PC
All right, so it's just a few days till skyrim is released now (omg)
But I'm torn between the ps3 and PC versions. Let me explain.
My ps3 is one of the older models, meaning it's somewhat worn down. The fan kicks on high mode in under 10 minutes (it even overheated in under a half hour a few times). It is annoying and very loud, but I can live with it.
So, maybe I should go with my PC, right? I prefer to buy games for PC for obvious reasons (because it's amazing). But I was looking over the specs. I roughly fit most of them.
Check this out:
Processor: intel i3-550 (dual core @ 3.2 GHz). Falls under the minimum specs of skyrim since it's dual core, but I think the added GHz should back that up.
RAM: 6 GB. Recommended is 4 GB. More than adequate.
Hard drive space: Duh, I'm fine.
Video card: ATI Radeon HD 4670. Recommended is an ATI HD 4890 or something like that. Might have to lower the graphics down a smudge, but I should be fine.
So, should I go with PC, which makes it kinda ok as far as specs go, or keep it PS3, not only because I can play on normal graphics (not the gorgeous kind like on PC), but also because I just think dual wielding seems nicer on a controller, but deal with an EXTREMELY obnoxious fan

Re: PS3 vs PC
I'd say go for PC. I'd always say that, because I like PC gaming, but remember the great big Elder Scrolls modding community out there. The mods alone should make opting for the PC version worthwhile.

Re: PS3 vs PC
Right, I agree with you on that, but also remember how heavy games can get with mods. In oblivion, my game still gets fidgity when I walk around the imperial city (but I was maxing EVERYTHING out in oblivion, the graphics, the mods, extensions & plugins, etc.) So that's why im not sure if my processor can handle skyrim + mods. I could always upgrade different parts of my computer, but I'm somewhat scared of the idea of replacing my processor (never did it before and those things are more fragile than a baby)

Re: PS3 vs PC
I say PC as well. Leilah has a fine point about the mods, but other than that you will be able to run the game in a higher resolution on a pc (well, concerning your specs the PS3 might be stronger), but you will be able to upgrade your PC if you want to. And if you are to scared to do it -then have an expert doing it. Another reason why to choose the PC rather than a console is the controls - mouse and keyboard has always been the better choice concerning 1st person shooters.

Don't forget there are mods for Oblivion that make the game run better.
You can bet there will the same kinds of mods for Skyrim.

This sort of question comes up a lot, and the answer is usually simple, if your PC can run it (reasonably) well, go PC.

Re: PS3 vs PC
i was thinking the same thing.... my desktop has 1gig ATI radeon (same as yours or close i think), 6 gigs ram, and a quadcore, but my ps3 is a first generation one with the crome n piano finish, and they notoriously overheat because of the chipset allowing them to run ps1/2 games... i also have a laptop with a 2gig vid card, 6 gigs ram, and a quadcore with amd videocard... the laptop runs starcraft 2 better then my desktop, but i have to use an external mouse, i somewhat prefer the ps3 tho...
i wanna use my ps3 controller on my laptop haha, running it through my big screen... that would be epic ( i hate 360 controllers)
i dunno i think im gunna go with ps3, after all i just bought a brand new dualshock 3 controller for 60 bucks, and i wanna feel the rumble of magic and combat i think, maybe ill return it and get a pc one, or get both who knows. i like to cheat with console sometimes, movetoqt, tmm 1, the usual lol

PC all the way. Modding communities, unofficial patches (which work) and all sorts of different ways to console it to make it YOUR experience.
I've played Oblivion on both PC and Xbox 360 (as well as a quick character on PS3) and I MUCH preferred the PC
I'll be honest, when I looked on this thread, I was expecting to see a LOT of flames...good to see it hasn't

Yeah, I recommend you get it on the PC. You'll get mods for it. I'm getting mine on PS3 but only because my computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements.

I think it depends on if you like to play games on the couch relaxing, or sitting upright at a desk like youre at work

Or if your room is set up like mine, play on the PC relaxing on my bed.soda popinski wrote:I think it depends on if you like to play games on the couch relaxing, or sitting upright at a desk like youre at work
It also depends on who shares the house with you. One of the reasons I prefer PC to console is that I have my PC all to myself, whereas I get very little time on the TV downstairs now that my Dad's retired.

Re: PS3 vs PC
Just to post some experience...
I bought Oblivion the verys first day it came to the shop. Minimal was (as I recall) 2GHz, 512MB RAM, ATI Radeon X600 (700, 800 - don't know for certain).
My setup was - 1,6GHz (Centrino single-core, 2MB L2 cache), 512MB RAM, ATI !mobility! Radeon X700 64MB. Yes, it was notebook.
Game was running at medium details (sliders), small textures (may run on medium, but gets laggy sometimes), shadows totally off, Bloom lighting, distant everything on at ~20fps (complex scene) and 30+fps at the most time.
I reinstaled it on external HDD and it was running at ~30fps (complex) and 40+fps standard. System could read from internal HDD and game could read from external = no delays = no lags = more fps. I know this is not true in most cases, but in my case, HDD was the slowest part of my PC and adding external really helped (the same with Test Drive Unlimited).
I think that Skyrim should run on PC and I would buy PC version (mods, addons, better graphics if you have decent HW - you don't at this time).
But I will personally buy PS3 version. I run Linux on my PC and I wouldn't risk emulating in Wine to get Skyrim running. And I bought PS3 to play on it, not to watch how it sits in the corner
Aaah, again, so much text and not so much information in it... Sorry.

Re: PS3 vs PC
ya well thats the thing too, if i play it on pc, i can cheat, and i usually do then after a while, its like a guide, u get it n promise not to look at any of the walkthroughs until youve beaten the game, then u get stuck and your like... ahh where is this damn quest in this guide? and you use it
lol id prolly turn on god mode at the first dragon... unlimited mana stam health and shouts? he wouldnt stand a chance, (only after dying a significant amount of times to frustrate me enough)

PC all the way. I say this because I don't have a PS3 or Xbox, but even if I did, I'd always choose the PC version. Better graphics (provided you can play the game on high or better settings) and mods, what's not to like?
Signatures are overrated.
Re: PS3 vs PC
Aside the tons of benefits (mods, quality etc), I'd go for PC just for the unofficial patches tbh

If the fan is that loud you may want to open it up and replace the thermal paste and vacuum the vents.
I'd say PC as well.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Almost all video cards have HDMI ports nowadays (my computer actually had one right on the motherboard, but integrated ports are lousy).Lynx2069 wrote:A high end PC can output to an HDTV via HDMI or DVI port.Secondrow wrote:PS3 for the Skyrim experience on a 50" LCD

Re: PS3 vs PC
A high end PC really isn't going to be it's worth in the scale of how much better the quaility will be. Seriously, unless you have your high end PC sitting right next to your XboX360/PS3... you ain't gonna notice sweet F A difference. Certainly not worth the cost of a new high end PC setup if you already have a console.Lynx2069 wrote:A high end PC can output to an HDTV via HDMI or DVI port.Secondrow wrote:PS3 for the Skyrim experience on a 50" LCD

Well my 32" TV in my room is a tails length from my computer, and a quick check shows my HDMI cable is long enough as well.

Never said it was convenent or worth the price of admission but if you've got the choice the PC version is where to go.lostlast wrote:A high end PC really isn't going to be it's worth in the scale of how much better the quaility will be. The topic is PS3 vs PC I simply stated that because a PC capable of running Skyrim would most likely support a standard 1920×1080 resolution output through HDMI or DVI. So if you wanted to play on a large HDTV its possible with console and PC.

Re: PS3 vs PC
the game demo were displayed on the 360 weren't they? what more do people want than what they saw? a longer draw distance? have these guys seen what a game like Dark Souls looks like on the consoles? people told me that Fallout looked way better on PC, I looked it up and all I saw was better gun decals and more shiny armour and slimy ghouls.lostlast wrote:A high end PC really isn't going to be it's worth in the scale of how much better the quaility will be. and most mods are of the quality that even I can make them and I do make them and they're awful ut they're only there for trivial things. the Unofficial Patches have only fixed problems that I never even knew I had i.e. they provide a thousand neglible fixes and some quest fixes that never broke for me when I had over 100 hours.
