Topic about the graphics of the leaks.

Post by Frogmander »

You have to understand a few things while watching these leaks you see all over...1. It could or could not be at max graphics settings. 2. You are watching it so you are noticing every little detail of wrong-ness, when playing you wouldin't 3. Its pre-recorded....If you have ever been on youtube you know for a fact that recordings are way way way worse quality than the actual game. If you watch a video in 240p than say the game has bad graphics you are judging it poorly...To sum it up: Don't set your ratings in stone or judge them based on some 240p lowest gfx settings 5fps video leak you saw, rate it on what you experienced after playing it for 500 hours. I am not trying to start on fights I just want to clear some things up so people don't freak out over the leaks that are everywhere, I actually suggest NOT watching the leaks, if you spoil the entire game for you than why even play it : /

Why don't you post this as a comment on one of the threads about the leak? I don't think this is worth it's own thread, as it is more of statement.

Topic I was going to post in was locked before I got a chance to type out my message, due to people raging about the 240p 5fps low quality gfx.

i agree with you; but should let it go. let people judge how they want, rather it from a crappy video or not, either way everybody will play it regardless. =]

Since the last topic about this was locked I'm sure there was no reason to make another.

That said, anyone who judges the graphics quality from a youtube video is a fool.

That's true. The quality of footage can only go down and not up due to the compression technology present in both recorded gameplay footage and streaming media. Errors are even introduced at the camera's end, so with all the quality loss you're only really getting a very general idea at best.

I'd liken it to how certain televisions have severe ghosting issues, some television broadcasts can be rather fuzzy and how satellite television tends to get incredibly deteriorated or pixellated while there's bad weather conditions - the original footage is still good quality and says absolutely nothing about how good the dvd (or bluray) releases of television series will look.

And again, as another person stated, while watching footage in this way it's very hard not to view it with a critical eye - since you're otherwise nothing more than a passive observer. When you're playing the game you'll be much more concerned with the gameplay, your character, the story, your skills and various things like that to either really pay too much attention to things like low resolution textures/shadows to really care.

Many games for both consoles feature strange instances of low resolution shadows for example. While playing I never really notice them - they only seem to become apparent when I put the controller down, my character (and the scene) goes idle and I'm closely examining the detail while eating or something.

I'm pretty sure that they've said that all of the footage we've seen is from the 360 version, so in some peoples cases it can only get better.

That's technically true - even though every statement to that effect has been a tad misleading.

The XBox360's graphics are roughly equivalent to the PC's lowest setting. That's true. What people repeatedly fail to mention is that the setting mentioned is the 'general quality' setting - usually a single slider - in the game that gives pre-set quality levels that are usually attuned to general PC specification groupings.

What's not been mentioned is you will probably be able (if not be forced) to tweak the game down even further. If your system is basically at the cusp of the minimum system requirements, disabling shadows and such might result in an increased framerate.

These settings can sometimes be reduced in-game, sometimes an 'ini file' edit is required. For example, my PC well exceeds the recommended specifications for Oblivion. I can run it, but it runs better in the 'lowest' setting. Even when in the 'lowest' setting it's still possible to reduce individual graphic effects (draw distance, shadows, lights, decals, reflections) even further to eke out a few more frames-per-second. Outside this, it's possible to edit the 'ini file' to remove trees and bushes, adjust how areas are pre-loaded and plenty of other things contributing to further frames-per-second gains.

As I said, I can play Oblivion at a reasonably high level - but I prefer to lower the settings really low because I prefer to have high frames-per-second than high graphics quality. For me it's preference, for others it may be the only way to get playable speeds on systems that are borderline minimum.

With Skyrim, it will doubtlessly be the same.

Making a new topic, to continue the discussion of a topic which was locked, is not a good idea, and is actually against the rules.

What about the footage that G4 gave out at the end of October? I thought the lip movement was pretty far off. Was that bad quality? it was on my Tv and no my Tv does not have bad graphics.

Only in the PC's people's cases. PS3 is only slightly better for graphics than Xbox and performs slightly worse.

Its also worth pointing out that given the massive amount of destruction in the leaked beginning could have required the use of a lower resolution texture, unfortunatly the same texture can be seen in part 3 of Bethesda's preview. It will be what it is.

Graphics, schmaffics.. They are important but they are not the most important aspect. It's leaps and bounds above Oblivion from what we've already seen from Bethy themselves.

I've also seen the leaked intro in 720p HD and it looks beautiful. The game is easily on par with Dragon Age 2 for consoles, as far as visuals go, IMO.
