Spoiler:
What's weird to me is that if Baurus and/or Jauffre survive the battle of the Imperial City, Ocato randomly goes hostile and kills them dead on the spot.

This has happened multiple times in my files. What's going on?

You're not the first person to report this sort of problem. I'm not sure as to the reason, but I'm fairly certain it's a bug of some sort.

This problem left me kinda stuck in the main quest because I really want Baurus to survive (don't really care for Jauffre) he's like my character's buddy. He's usually the first to die in the Battle For Bruma, I even tried turning the difficulty sliders all the way down but to no avail. And my current Warrior character is no good at restoration and sneaking, so no healing items or spells.

Thank you Duruza.

Actually, the items you have on the statue are calculated in a complex way:
UESP wrote:The game determines the "best" items - not just the most expensive items - taking into account enchantments; for example, the Dark Brotherhood Black Hand Robe has zero value but will take precedence over many other items, including some magical armor. If you are very particular about the appearance of your statue, it is recommended that you leave all of your additional items in a safe place before talking to Martin.
It seems health, quality and enchantments are all considered.

Wow... I wish I had seen that death where he ran in front of Martin... Awesome :D

I only finished the main quest once. And they both died. Jaufree died in bruma, Baurus was already dead by then, I don't remember when he died though =/

I don't know if it's supposed to happen, but when I returned from the great gate there were still some daedras fighting, and a Xivilai killed Jaufree and two other guys before I was able to get to him... I took Jaufree's sword, and I still use it. (I enchanted it and called it "Jaufree's katana")

All my characters' enchanted weapons are named after either canon characters or my own characters (A lot of items are named after Valence, Edfort, and Rylvyr, my champions of Arena, Daggerfall, and Morrowind respectively. I can't help it XD). One of my characters has a 'Jauffre's Katana' and and set of 'Baurus' Shield' and 'Baurus' Sword'.

I've had Baurus and Jauffre die on the Bruma quest the last few times through. I don't believe it was a fight amongst my group as I usually charge the gates and stay away from the others to avoid any assaults. I once had Martin and the Kvatch force fighting when I had him tag along on the retaking Kvatch quest.

I'm thinking of acquiring a few temporary companions, upping my conjuration, and trying to take on the Great Gate quest at level 40 and see if Baurus and Jauffre will live with all the extra combatants.

I'm not lucky enough to be on PC though. My PC sucks. So I have to save them the old fashioned way.

You know, those two die so easily and often that I originally thought that it was a plot point. Even though that's not the case, I still wonder why it wasn't part of the questline. I might have liked to see something like Jauffre dying and the surviving blades declaring the PC the new grand-master, if the PC joined the Blades faction early on, netting the player a unique Akaviri Katana or armor set.

In any case, I made a high level character run that saved them one time by clearing out daedra at the gates and then booking it to the Sigil Keep, no combat along the way. I don't know if it was a successful tactic or random luck, though.

The first time I played it they both died. The second time I played through it, I went to painful efforts to keep them both alive. It wasn't worth it ._.

In the grand scheme of things, I'm okay with the notion that Jauffre bites the big one. In this sense he pulls off a Ben Kenobi vanishing act and clears the way for new blood to rise in the ranks of the Blades.

Baurus, on the other hand, was with you from the very start. Plus, he teaches you things. You have to keep him around.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

Baurus is your friend. He has faith in you when no one else did, and trusts you. He guides you, teaches and is friendly with you. He's one of the few NPCs in Oblivion that made a lasting impression on me. He's one of the better developed characters in the game. You get to know him and his motivations.

For these reasons, regardless of my level I've always kept him alive. I've never needed to use the console or go out of my way besides reloading a save once or twice.

Jaufree on the other hand, while interesting I don't mind if he dies. Partly because his voice just annoys me for some reason.

I was devastated when Baurus died during the meeting with the Mythic Dawn my first play through. I tidied up his body, took his katana, and had no other choice but to continue my quest. Then when Jauffre perished at the Great Gate I felt as though I had lost my mentor, because I thought he was my leader in the main quest, not Martin.

I like both of them. Baurus was a hero who blamed himself for the Emperor's death; it just seems wrong to me to just let him die XD The poor guy needs some sort of victory to help him.
As for Jauffre, I'd like to keep him alive too. I can imagine he'd be attached to Martin as well. To see the young baby he held in his arms once grow into the man that he became must be pretty nice for ol' Jauffre.

For me, both of them lived, even though Baurus almost went down in the last battle him and Juaffre were hacking the living baby Jesus out of dremora(s?) and a few atronachs.

I think I would enjoy scripted deaths, for at least Jauffre. I'm always caught between wanting to keep them alive and wanting them to die heroically at Bruma, as martyrs for Tamriel.

I'm kinda the opposite. I like knowing that Baurus and Jauffre survived the horrors of Oblivion. Jauffre can return to a peaceful retirement in Weynon Priory. Baurus can serve as one of the highest ranking Blades in Cloud Ruler Top. Both know your character, trust your character, and will likely be there if your character ever need help in the future. (even if it was simple as 'Hey, I lost my house, Baurus/Jauffre. Mind if I crash here a bit and rebuild my life?' or dramatic and cliched as 'Hey, can you take care of my baby? I'm very sick and won't last long and you two are the only ones I can entrust with my baby...')
