Re: PC specs for skyrim?
I don't think your RAM will matter. I believe the game is a 32-bit executible so it will only see 4GB max. (correct me if I'm wrong?)Mucro wrote:Are these much?Mucro wrote:Intelcore i7 950

The processor and GFX card though are very nice.

@Jormungand: It's 2GB.
Re: PC specs for skyrim?
I have been waiting for the specs, but still can not decide... Currently on my list: Digital Storm Black OPs
Intel Core i7 990X Extreme Edition (3.46 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.73Ghz) (Six Core) (12MB Cache)
2x SLI (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M 2GB)
12GB DDR3 1333MHz (Requires Intel Extreme Edition Processor)
2x Intel 250GB SSD (510 Series) (SATA 6Gb/s)
- OR -
Intel Core i7 2960XM Extreme Edition (2.7 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.7Ghz) (Quad Core) (8MB Cache)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M 2GB
16GB DDR3 1866MHz
2x Intel 250GB SSD (510 Series) (SATA 6Gb/s)
I am loosing 2 Cores, almost 1Ghz of processor speed, and 4MB of Chache.
I also loose SLI
I gain 4GB RAM, and 533MHz
The key is not always how much you get, but how it is being used. I set aside $10K, so it is not about the money.
I still haven't been able to decide, even after several months. I really do not play that many games. I am would basically be buying this to play Skryim... which I have not even decided if I want to do that either.

That is a rather tough call, IMO. I see what you mean on what you lose and gain on one or the other.Jeff wrote:I have been waiting for the specs, but still can not decide... Currently on my list: Digital Storm Black OPs

With my best guess and best opinion, I would probably say the first one. Though it is up to you, I would look for other opinions as well.

Windows 7 64-bit
AMD 1055T 6-core at 2.8GHz
8 GB of RAM
ATi Radeon HD 6570
1.5 TB of disk space
37" HDTV
Best part of all, it has this really convenient drink tray that slides in and out of the front
The machine is new and with low mileage, so there's very little junk cluttering up the works when I do install Skyrim onto it. I'll cross my fingers in the hope that it'll run at the Ultra setting.

Re: PC specs for skyrim?
I'm probably going to play it on my Xbox 360 but out of curiousity; what could my laptop run Skyrim on?
Specs are:
Intel Core i5M 430 2.6 GHz which turbos up to 2.56 GHz or something
Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5650
6gb of ram
Resolution 1366 x 768

Re: PC specs for skyrim?
If money isn't an problem, go for the second, but with a few tweaks. There isn't a single game on the market that properly utilizes a hex core, and most games use between 2 and 4 cores actively. I'm guessing Skyrim will be optimized for 3, as that's what's on the 360, and it's much harder to scale CPU usage than GPU usage from what I can tell. A hex core is a waste of money unless you're using it as a workstation, but if you're using it as a workstation, why game on it?Jeff wrote:I have been waiting for the specs, but still can not decide... Double up the GeForce 580s. A single 580 will max every game on the market at stupid ridiculous high FPS, but if you pop two in, you won't need a GPU upgrade for...a long time. A very long time. I have a Radeon 6850 in my machine, and it maxes everything I own but BF3 at 30+ FPS. The 6850 is equivalent to a GeForce 460, which is a much punier card than the 580.
You don't really need 16 gigs of RAM. I have 4, and again, I max everything but BF3, and I come very, very close to maxing BF3. I only have VSync turned off and AA at 2x. The nice thing about having a lot of RAM is that it allows you to turn off hard drive caching, so your RAM acts as a very fast hard drive cache. And RAM is so cheap anyway...4 gigs goes for under $100 from newegg.
The SSDs are a good choice, but you may want to consider adding in a few HDDs. HDDs are cheap, and they won't bog your system down if you don't install games on them. Use them for bulk data - documents, pictures, music, movies, 'movies,' etc. You can get a pair of 1 TB drives for under $400 IIRC. If you can, I'd STRONGLY recommend putting everything into RAID 1. What that means is, you'll only have 250gb of data available for the SSDs, and 1 TB for the HDDs if you go that route, BUT a disk failure will NOT cause data failure.
RAID 1 puts your hard drives into a mirroring mode, so your 250gb drives would mirror each other, your 1tb drives would mirror each other, etc. It's a good insurance policy. Make sure you get a beefy power supply as well. Two 580s will require 800-1000 watts of power with everything else in your system.
One final note: Don't buy from a site like Digital Storm if you can at all help it. They literally just buy parts from Newegg in bulk for cheap, slap them together, and charge you a massive (30%ish) markup over the actual market value of your PC. If you know someone who can build a PC, ask if they would be willing to do so for a fee. You'll always spend less money this way.
In other news, I'm 100% confident that I'll max Skyrim at relatively high frame rates. My system:
AMD Phenom II X4 3.2GHerz quad core
4 GB DDR2 800 RAM
Radeon 6850 1GB
It's kind of a crappy system, because I've been screwed over by my budget too many times to count. I have a mobo that's backwards compatible to AM3, because I couldn't afford a new mobo and new RAM, and this mobo only has one PCI-e slot, so I only have one 6850 when I'd really rather have two. It runs things well enough, and I've been building it for 6 years, so it's quite a sentimental thing for me.

Re: PC specs for skyrim?
Interesting, according to the article my trusty Geforce 7800 GTX (with 256 mb VRAM) might actually run the game decently enough at low-medium settings, even though minimum is 512 mb. I think I'd be happy with low though. If that's the case I might actually suffer through Steam despite my earlier comment.
Athlon 64x2 4200+ 2.2 Ghz
2Gb Ram (running xp)
Geforce 7800 GTX 256 mb
So, do you think that could actually handle low settings? In a resolution higher than say 800x600?

Have you got a duo or a quad core? You'll be able to run it in either case though.

Re: PC specs for skyrim?
I don't think you'll be able to run it at High properly, sorry
But you should be able to increase the draw distance a bit in order to have a nicer world than on the 360. Truth be told, I don't know. I tend to tweak the graphics until I can barely run games without stuttering and I've found out that by sacrificing a bit of resolution you can crank up some other aspects. With your relatively low resolution you should be able to get above Medium but not to High, if you get what I mean.
