Dragon language is in Skyrim...it's like saying you are to preoccupied with MW3 to learn about modern guns...
The term 'preoccupied with Skyrim' is very broad, you understand; I don't want to spend the time I could be playing the game trying to learn the language myself. Besides, the Dovakhiin interacts with Dragontongue in a much different way to what I proposed, if what I understand is correct... which I'm pretty sure it is.

If in-game you can gradually get an understanding of draconic, then i'm down, but if i have to learn outside of gameplay, in the real world, i'm gonna pass. I could be chasing butterflies for three hours or watching salmon swim upstream, why would i "read" instead?

You do realize that the Dragon Tongue is one of, if not the main focus of the game :# Its for more of an immersion experience, how are you expected to become dragonborn yet not even know what Fus Ro Dah means? (It means Force Balance Push)

From what I understand, you do learn it. I think it was something like this:

Fus Ro Dah
symbol Symbol Symbol
Force Balance Push

At least I think it was something like that, I know it said the english words in the demo, as I remember it was something like "Symbol (under it) Thunder", though I want to go as far as to read the entire word walls, gives me something to do, more immersive, and gains me RL knowledge!

Edit: Ok confirmed it Symbol (underneath) english word, I am guessing your character says/yells the dragon word though so you could figure that out...though all the builds we have seen of it are pre-alpha xbox 360, so that may have changed. Still, get to learn the symbols english meanings.

First thing I am doing after getting the game is looking the cashier straight in the eye and yelling "FORCE BALANCE PUSH!", if he responds FUS RO DAH he wins the internet.

No, that wouldn't make any sense. When someone says something to you, do you just repeat it in a different language? No, you don't (unless they were asking how you said something in a different language). He would win the internet if he did a prat fall.

Actually, it still doesn't make any sense. You'd have to say it in dragon for it to be funny.

No, the popular line from Skyrim Fus Ro Do, Force Balance Push is the nonsensical English version. If I say, "Veni, Vidi, Vici.", people know I'm quoting Julius Caesar. However, it's not as obvious if I as "I came, I saw, I conquered.", despite it meaning the same thing.
Also, you have absolutely no right to tell me what threads I can post in. If you have a problem with what I post, report it. Otherwise, there is no reason to complain.

Unfortunately your argument is still invalid, as I would be saying it at the midnight release of said game at a video game store. Not just some random quote at some random place by some old thing/person.

Let's move on?
The language itself is confusing. Does one symbol mean that word constantly?

Say the symbol is just two lines and a dot (just an example) and it pronounces "ro" (again, example), is that symbol always going to mean "ro"?

No, each symbol is a letter, for example N is two long slashes across and a dot above. Though I have noticed a few uses of one symbol being an entire word...I wish they would explain this..

I can do daedric. Took me several days to learn completely. Dragon language may be difficult.

Yeah I can read deadric fairly easily, most of the letters are just english letters changed a bit.

I can see a fanatic's attraction to understanding the language - after all Bethesda have crafted a wonderful language that's just as viable as Klingon, and look how well known and popular that has become over the years :)

Still, at least in my case, I don't see any immediate need to learn the language. The game can be fully played and understood without taking on the task - however it's something I'll be sure to do (or at least attempt) somewhere down the line.

The reason - Easter Eggs.

Since the language is viable, there are sure to be more than a couple of instances where Dragon Writing appears in the game but is neither a plot element nor translated in-game. Only by learning the language can you really decipher all these hidden messages, and they could be really funny jokes, easter eggs, or maybe even clues to hidden treasure - sort of like how a secret message was written on the cover of a games magazine a while back :)

In those sort of cases, they would more or less be written in English with a glyph-for-glyph substitution taking place (like Deadric), so you may be able to read these messages even though many of the others only translate into Dragon Tongue.

So in a nutshell, being able to decipher the Dragon Writing will eventually be a must for me - but learning and understanding the Dragon Tongue language is probably going a little too far.

I am not planning to fully understand it quite yet, once the game comes out and I get all the shouts than I will start hunkering down and trying to learn it more. Though I am a lore nerd, I spend hours and days on this wiki reading things, I spend hours on Wowpedia learning warcraft lore, I just love learning the full story of games :P
