Anyone else trying to learn....
The dragon language? I am trying to learn the dragon language and eventually, when the game comes out, decipher all of the "word walls" into english, or am I the only one nerdy enough to do this? I have learned the Deadric alphabet though the Dragon one looks just a bit more complicated...

I'll be delving into it when the game comes out.... Maybe. It'll be a lot of work.

I did try, but it got a bit too hard. I am sure the game will help teach me

Re: Anyone else trying to learn....
I am having an easy time transfering english letters / english language into dragon speech, but transfering english-word dragon speech into regular english is proving to be quite difficult...though I am a problem solver by nature so I am sure I will be able to crack some of these odd...literature's?

What about memorizing the characters? Like how do you know what character goes with "Dova", "Fus", etc?Frogmander wrote:I am having an easy time transfering english letters / english language into dragon speech, but transfering english-word dragon speech into regular english is proving to be quite difficult...though I am a problem solver by nature so I am sure I will be able to crack some of these odd...literature's?

Re: Anyone else trying to learn....
I am slowly but surely working on that, just think of it as, or atleast how I am thinking of it as.."A = two slash down dot in middle" (not accurate just an example). I will probably print it out and tape it to my computer tower or something. Though I honestly have no idea how to translate the english-word dragon language into regular english, it seems to be impossible without a translation key from Bethesda :/. It seems similar to various asian languages where one "symbol" can represent an entire word, or even a short sentence.Farlace wrote:What about memorizing the characters? Instead of a map, Bethesda should have given a poser of the charactesr, its translations and a few examplesFrogmander wrote:

Re: Anyone else trying to learn....
We simply don't know enough about the language to learn it right now. Unlike the Ayleid or the Dwemer language, it's not just transliterated symbols. My guess: It's literally impossible to fully learn, or even mostly understand without just being told what they mean. They only created the words necessary for the word walls and shouts.

Well we have the "Dovakhin" poem to go off of, though that will only translate a few combinations of symbolsFarlace wrote:Instead of a map, Bethesda should have given a poser of the charactesr, its translations and a few examplesFrogmander wrote:

This is an RPG, not only an RPG but an elder scrolls game, you are obviously underestimating the power of an RPG gamerAKB wrote:We simply don't know enough about the language to learn it right now. Re: Anyone else trying to learn....
I'm being serious. I guess I could be wrong, there could be a Dragon to Cyrodilic dictionary in the game (or one they will actually release separately). I doubt it, but it's possible. As an example, the Klingon Language only came about because Nimoy hired a linguist to fully create it based on the few phrases they already made. The point is, it's not easy to just make up an entire language. The dev team isn't likely to fully develop it without a reason. If they did, I really think they'd of mentioned it by now.

AKB does have a point. We can learn what was given, just like how we can only learn very little when it comes to Dwarven and Ayleid languages.

You do realize this is an RPG right..? RPGs have deep knowledge hidden within their depths, if you REALLY wanted to you could figure out the great great grandfather of a shopkeeper that you killed and what his job wasAKB wrote:I'm being serious. Re: Anyone else trying to learn....
From what I remember, you could actually learn Dwemer and Ayleid. Before you say "Then why are you arguing this?" It's because they're just swapped out letters. It's like using 1 to represent A, 2 to represent B, 3 to represent C, etc. This isn't true for the Dragon Language, even when you translate the symbols to there English equivalent, it's still looks like gibberish. Either they're using a much more difficult language code, or they're making it up as they go along.Farlace wrote:AKB does have a point. Besides, I vaguely remember Todd saying there is only three-hundred or so words. Not enough to actually learn it.

Yet most likely enough to translate what is ingame.AKB wrote:From what I remember, you could actually learn Dwemer and Ayleid. Before you say "Then why are you arguing this?" What? Yes, they probably translate what is in-game. However, you may notice that the average vocabulary has more than three-hundred words in it. After that, unless they use Dragon Language again, that's it. You won't be able to casually speak in dragon, even if you learned all the words.

I don't want to be able to 'speak' dragon, i just want to be able to personally read every draconic word in the actual game. Like when i stumble upon a new word, i can 'read' it, you know what i mean?

Re: Anyone else trying to learn....
The concept of being able to read Dragon language as if it were English is certainly tempting, but I'll be too preoccupied with Skyrim to spend time pouring myself into such a task.
I could use it to roleplay, say, my character starts to study the lexicography of Dragon-tongue, giving me an excuse to 'learn' it whilst enriching my character(s).

This article may help:

From what it says, it seems that dragon language is actually a language of its own, just a simple one.
