In Oblivion I was framed, in Skyrim i'll have done something insane such as killed a Legionaire.
We're given the reason for our imprisonment though.
It's called 'selective reading/listening'. I'm going to completely ignore the official reasons, because I already have my characters' reasons for being imprisoned sorted out. :)

In some pod-cast or interview Todd Howard specifically mentioned that it will NOT be explained what happened to you before imprisonment for the purpose of RP.
He said he was fine with the tradition of not doing this so that the player can make up his own reason.
I don't have a link but I assure you that he said this.... or I was on LSD when I was listening...

Either you're confused, Todd was confused, Todd hasn't ever played his own game, or something's changed.
Spoiler:
Rolok speaking to you: "Hey, you. You're finally awake. You were trying to cross the border..."
The second line in the game tells you why you're imprisoned.

I found the podcast. 32:30 @ http://www.gameinformer.com/b/podcasts/ ... ardse.aspx
It seems that this reason that suddenly does exist is no problem from an RP perspective. There are a billion ways to explain why you did what you did.

Todd said way back in January/February that the reason we were arrested was that
Spoiler:
we were crossing the border
but I guess people forgot that.

Yeah, that's not too bad. In Morrowind your character did just as much without the player controlling it. The difference from "I'm onna boat!" to "I'm crozzn' mountains!" Is the transportation method. The interesting part is not that you crossed the border, but why you crossed it. You could still be on the run from the law or the mob, or whoever.
