I thought, "Oh dang I just walked into Heck!" I also almost threw up at the sight of the impaled heads...

I immediately turned around and went back to Cyrodiil when I entered my first Oblivion gate. :p It was pretty scary.

When I entered one for the first time (I think it was the gate in ) I saw the load screen mention to save often when in the Oblivion planes. I thought to myself "Naw, it cannot be that har-"

I didn't know you had to click on the actual gate in order to enter Oblivion. I just tried walking through the portal and found myself staring at the gates to Kvatch.
My first reaction when I first entered Oblivion itself was to check my current stock of healing potions.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

Nothing special... I knew it had to be filled with lava and stuff, so... I wasn't scared or anything.

I was reluctant to go further but my mate who was watching me (he's been playing Oblivion since it came out) encouraged me to go further. I was still very scared and nearly peed my pants everytime i walked past a wall and spikes came out...

I thought, "pretty cool" then kept getting slaughtered and that made me learn about efficient leveling.
A hero can be anyone, even a man doing some as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy's shoulders to let him know the world hadn't ended.

Re: What was your reaction when...
God I hated the Oblivion gates...I was doing the Skingrad Recommendation quest for the Mages Guild when I had my first encounter with an Oblivion gate ouside of Kvatch.I was on my way to Bleak Flats Cave when a Oblivion gate opened close by and I was like "....oh no....not this again...Are they following me??Do the gates spawn randomly??".I was pretty weak at tackling Oblivion gates on my first playthrough but on my second playthrough that changed so,I can give you two answers:
1 play "NO,NO,NO,NO god damn it !
2 play "Bleah,what a chore"

Re: What was your reaction when...
Honestly, stepping into Oblivion for the first time is not something I can remember clearly, I guess it just wasn't that overwhelming for me. I much preferred the moment I stepped out of the Sewers, into the light of day. That was a cool moment.
The only real memory I have of it is sending Ilend Vonius back out the gate, not wanting to have to encumber myself with his protection.

Well, after 1 month in-game I decided to go and see what Kvatch was like.
I had a full steel armor and a silver longsword (my usual equipment for dungeon diving) and decided to enter Oblivion...

If I recall correctly, I was so amazed by the change of scenery, from the beautiful abbeys, fields and terrain - all of a sudden I'm in hell, and it felt like hell - having to reload a couple of times.

Re: What was your reaction when...
Oblivion?
I'll be honest, I thought I was playing a different game. I was scared witless by the experience. This was of course in 2007, when I was just 13 and more easily disturbed, but there was just something about it that I didn't like. I refused to play the Kvatch gate until I had someone else in the room with me. I didn't level up until I'd finished the main quest for fear of encountering more difficult enemies.
Of course, that short post doesn't do the experience justice. But for some reason, it just shifted in tone entirely. Maybe it was the dungeon music. Maybe I was just too young. But either way, I hated it, and I want to do it again. There are still some Oblivion worlds that I never 'solved', like the Skingrad one. That escaped me.

Re: What was your reaction when...
TBH, I never liked approaching oblivion gates due to the change in weather and how you can just pass one by and still have the Blood red sky above you even if you had no intention of going in and end up miles away before the sky changes to back again. Now that I think about it, its pretty natural that on the first time of actually entering an Oblivion gate that I thought "I don't really feel like ever going in one of these again. (Which is why sometimes I spent days not bothering with the main quest line due to the frightening nature of the gates.)

Re: What was your reaction when...
Yeah... being of higher level DEFINITELY doesn't help. I was only 13 with my first one, it felt like it took hours to finish the gate. (fast-forward a few years and I'm not at all phased by the Gates, of which clearing them has become something trivial.)
