What if Skyrim was the last TES game?

Post by Tiber-Septim »

What if Skyrim was the last TES game?

As you know there is not much time until Skyrim is released.
Everyone is excited about the game but what if it was the last TES game?

This is just a poll to see how people would react. :?

I would be incandescant with rage and very upset. I would also play all the TES games through for the rest of my life.

On a side note, shouldn't this be in the Skyrim subforum?

I doubt it, as they have yet to make TES: Elsweyr, TES: Valenwood, TES: Summerset Isle, and TES: Black Marsh.

But if Skyrim WERE the last TES game, I'd be sad. :(

I'd probably have to march down to Maryland and abduct the WHOLE Bethesda team and make them make it.

If that's what we have to do to see more elder scrolls, Im a allll in.

They better keep going or i will die. My heart will just stop, ill start seeing visions of the past elder scrolls games and then die. actually no. Ill be sad, cry a lot then die. I will die HARD. And after Im dead, ill be resting in my casket living an endless dream based on the elder scrolls.

They've created a huge imaginary world with its own detailed history (lore), laws of physics (based on magic), antagonists (enemies) and heroes (players, US). It's large enough that you can take any part of it and expand it into a full-blown storyline. The possibilities are almost infinite.

I don't think the Elder Scrolls franchise is dead yet. There's too much potential for making money from the "intellectual rights" to their creation. Elder Scrolls may even become the next Lord of the Rings, spawning spin-off books, movies and games. Look at the Resident Evil games, for example... Four spin-off movies so far. Look at Star Trek. Started as a TV Series in the 1960's and resulted in thousands of spin-off books, four TV Series (Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, Enterprise), nearly a dozen movies and numerous games. Look at Stargate: Started as one movie in the early 1990's and resulted in three TV Series (SG-1, Atlantis, Universe), several spin-off SG-1 movies and hundreds of books.

No, I don't think Skyrim will be the last TES game, because it's the fans (US) who keep the franchise alive. If it wasn't for US here as part of the army of Oblivion fans STILL playing after 5 years, extolling the virtues of it, and spurring budding RPG'ers to buy/play it too, interest would have waned years ago. Skyrim would have been nothing more than a brief vague idea in someone's head, never realised, or tentatively discussed and shot down in flames because "there's not enough interest to justify the expense of development".

Look at it this way. How many new members have been joining our ranks lately? How many people have recently bought Morrowind and/or Oblivion to experience them before Skyrim is released? Where did they get the idea from? Every Google search they do for RPG, Morrowind, Oblivion or Skyrim has UESP Wiki info and UESP forum posts amongst the search results, that's why. And WE are responsible for "creating" those search results.

It's precisely BECAUSE the fans have kept the interest and momentum going with Morrowind and Oblivion that Skyrim has become a reality. WE were the driving force behind it, even though we were unaware of it. All these years, we've been playing the "Persuasion mini-game" with Bethesda, to get their Disposition high enough. At some point, we obviously succeeded, but they "Kept Mum" about it so as not to get our hopes up then dash them. And in less than 2 weeks, we'll see if the reward justifies the MASSIVE effort of our collective "Main Quest". Personally, I hope so. If not, I'll be bitterly disappointed.

I did some searches recently for a Far Cry related problem and they led me to my OWN posts from 2004 at Ubisoft's Far Cry Technical Forum! Talk about "helping myself in the future", eh?

Wow. Your essay hit me HARD. You have really good points. Bethesda shouldn't just drop Tes, after creating what they did. If you ask me, they're screwed :) they can't stop now. Who knows the game could defineltly be a movie, morrowind through skyrim simple.
Mr. God Howard and Pete Hines could be reading this right now and if they were, I'm sure they would agree

I think they will make 10 TES games, Black Marsh, Elsweyr, Valenwood, Summerset Isle will be 6,7,8 and 9 and 10 could be set on the whole continent like Arena but much more detailed. Perhaps one more for Akavir, or more for the other continents, or more that allow you to explore the realms of daedric princes like Azura or Vaermina. Perhaps the series will never stop.

Is there really a reason to continue this thread? I think H8Ball summed it up perfectly (though I'd of used less references). Seriously though, H8ball essentially said what I've been thinking (and in fact ruined an essay I've been writing on this).

I would be really [&@%!] off, but I would still feel that Skyrim would be a good game to end on seeing that it looks like it'll easily be my favorite of the series. But I would still be pretty bummed. :(

If we are talking about extreme scenarios in witch the TES brand remains unused after Skyrim, then buying the IP may not be possible either.
This happened to the Discword games for example. Because of bankruptcies, takeovers, mergers and/or deaths, the rights to them are in limbo. The stuff is still copyrighted but it unclear exactly by whom. The result is that NOONE can re-release them. It's a shame too as they would have been great for Android or Ios.

There are still provinces to cover(Black Marsh | Elsweyr | Hammerfell | High Rock | Summerset Isle | Valenwood, not counting other isles and continents like Akavir)and to make an armagedon-like prophecy isn't that hard.
I would be upset if Skyrim was the last TES ever made.

There will be at very least one for each race, I don't think arena or daggerfall were race ones like Morrowwind, Oblivion, and Skyrim (Dunmer, Imperials, Nord), I am guessing 15 in the series at very least, though it's so big I doubt it'll stop there.

Seeing the troubles between the Argonians and the Dunmers, it will not surprise me if the next Elder Scrolls game takes place in Black Marsh.

They'll think of a reason to continue the franchise. After all, that's why they split the world into provinces in the first place. Each game takes place in a different province, usually at a different period in history to avoid continuity problems.

Skyrim is set 200 years or so after Oblivion, a neat plot device that allows the writers to start anew with a "blank slate". We naturally accept that, after SO much time, all previous characters are dead of old age, monsters have died out or migrated, weapons and magic have developed (or been forgotten), etc. This gives them the freedom to introduce all-new characters, monsters, and even the "evolution" of a significantly different RPG character development system, with changes to skills, attributes, levelling mechanics and gameplay.

Oblivion was set only 4 years after Morrowind, which caused continuity headaches as the Nerevarine is assumed to be still alive. They couldn't kill off the hero, or fans would go ape. So they came up with "The Nerevarine has left Morrowind for regions unknown". It doesn't say WHY, or WHERE to. We're left to guess, but it's a logically TRUE statement whichever way you look at it. 1. Anyone who hasn't played Morrowind doesn't know or care, but accepts the statement is true. 2. Anyone who HAS played Morrowind IS the Nerevarine and they're NOW playing Oblivion (set in Cyrodiil), so they HAVE "left Morrowind" and "regions unknown" IS Cyrodiil. For them, the statement IS true. It's got you by the logical "short & curlies" BOTH ways.

@AKB: Sorry if I ninja'd you. I'm sure we'd all appreciate reading your "essay", though, as different takes on things are always welcome. Don't let that hard work go to waste!
