Damage Balance

Post by Frogmander »

Anyone have any idea if they have worked on this since oblivion? Back in oblivion the two difficulty levels were:
A. You can get exploded in the middle of a nuke then stepped on by the God of Destruction but youll still be fine, oh yeah and if you punch anyone they die.
B. That guard over there? Yeah hes taken 293 arrows to the chest but hes fine, really he is! Just dont let him punch you or you will go flying, I think you are made of glass.

Have they worked on this to balance it out? In oblivion I had to get a mod that actually made the damage more balanced and realistic, no more guards taking 59235872367858725 arrows to the head, punching you, than walking off because they killed you and they are fine..

I can honestly say I never experienced this particular problem, but I certainly hope it isn't present in Skyrim. I never moved the Oblivion difficulty slider off the default setting.

I found out that this was only a problem at really high levels, and even then I was still invincible in Oblivion (at 100% difficulty).

Since I usually (by lategame) have either:
100 % chameleon, or
100 % resist magic, 100 % reflect damage, and so on.

Plus having some insane enchanted weapon with Soul trap and some others like a lot of resist-reductions helped a lot..

- But yeah, if you don't do that it is almost impossible to play @ lvl 40+

I was lv40 with no idea of 100% invunerablity, i did absolutely fine. Also the arrow thing i never had to use more than 5 that was on a minatour. My only complaint is marksman leveling speed.

One thing they need to add to enchantments is a bonus penalty for multiple enchantments of the same type. So instead of getting 100% Resist magic, you can get close with nifty gear, but never actually to invulnerability.

True, but since it is a real trouble getting all of this gear (i mean damn closing all those Oblivion gates) is hard work, you should be rewarded. But I agree, there should be some form of diminishing returns.

Though you could save just before you closed the Oblivion gate, and reload if you didn't get resist magic.

Skyrim is supposed to be much harder in comparison to Oblivion. There is apparently no difficulty slider anymore, instead it's just one difficulty.. Very Hard XD

Well lets hope they do said difficulty right, if they do it right it should be: 1. Dragons take a large amount of effort to kill, no one shotting!
2. You should die in a few hits
3. Guards shouldint be as strong as twenty dragons at low level, and die in one punch at high level
4. 100% chamel, and 100% dmg reduction should be impossible, most I would say would be roughly 50-80%

I've read quite a few of those three hour previews from Gamesradar and such and so far:
1. They found dragons to be waaaaay harder to kill than any other enemy, some of them died five or six times before they killed them.In the official gameplay demos the player character is level 34 and dragons still take quite a few hits to even go down to the ground.
2. The higher the level of the creature you are fighting the more damage it does and the less you do. From what I have heard.. Lets say an average wolf can spawn anywhere between level 1-5, depending on your level the wolf has a different percentage chance to spawn at a certain level.
3. Guards are really tough enemies especially at low levels and even worse when fought in groups.
4. I can't say much about this, but I agree with you. They CAN NOT have 100% ANYTHING, it totally ruins the game when you can just walk through without killing anyone/thing.
