I do not want to be able to buy a castle.
I would prefer to be able to own that castle through becoming duke of an area...or something.
So it's your castle, but you can't just buy your way onto the throne.

Quest houses, haunted houses, and little details like the treasure of rosethorn were nice. But I want just bog standard homes to buy with money.

And what I would REALLY love, would be some kind of "Dovakiin's Tower." A big house which a tall tower, and at the top there is an outside area which lets you see most of skyrim. A kind of watchtower for dragons.

In Oblivion I always wanted to be able have my own farm/manor in the middle of the forest like Rugdumphs. You could live there with your family and occasionally protect it from hostile dragons :)

Also if we could chose where houses could be built, that would be over the top

I'm hoping we can get some houses other than those in the main cities. It'd make RP a bit more interesting. I'd like to RP a character that comes from a small village and finds out he's the dovahkiin.

If you can get married, I would assume that you can buy houses to live in

Makes sense.. And I recall God Howard saying that you can have friendly relationships with civilians and you can invite them over for a visit... I think he was referring to homes there

:D We'll have a lovely visit over tea, whilst I show off the hunting trophies. And my pet doggie. Or troll. I think a pet troll would be fantastic (As unlikely as I know it to be.)
To see the world in a grain of sand
And heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.

I can't wait to befriend someone I secretly hate, invite them over for a visit, and bury them in the back yard.

Hahaha... Sims flash back. I never locked any guests in the basement and waited till they died of starvation. Nope. Never did that ever.

Oh and shut up. Sims is a cool game.

Like other players I absolutely LOVED owning houses in Oblivion, and also roleplayed around the maid character that you encounter (trying to not give too many spoilers away).

I genuinely live this type of game while I play it, and love the comfort of "coming home" and resting, having my own stuff about, getting to know the neighbours, etc.

Funny, but I didn't go to quite those lengths in Fallout 3, despite hearing tales about other players decorating their houses with gnomes and so-on: it just didn't grab me in quite that way, although I enjoyed it immensely in other ways.

I had my mage apprentice stay at my Bruma house, as sort of a bulter.

My favorite house was always the Bruma house, but I try to give my characters houses that fit them and their race.
My wood elf has the Bruma House because he's my main, and I like that house the most.
My Dark elf has the Cheydinhal house, my Argonian lives in Bravil, my Imperial lives in Anvil, et cetera.

Me too, I like to keep the game as realistic as possible.

I hope in Skyrim you can have a house off to it self, and live off the land in the country side, farming has been confirmed, so it would be cool to chop wood for the fireplace, hunt (with trophies), and farm on your land. It would be a cool place to retire and work on your ranch, maybe even have horses, dogs, chickens etc.

In Morrowind I lived in The Arena Storage area in Vivec. and later in the basement of the Mournhold palace. Those were the places with the most storage and I am a packrat.
In Oblivion I preferred Anvil for exactly the same reason. The basement was awsome.

I'm hoping for something similar in Skyrim. It doesn't need to be fancy as long as it has LOTS of storage. It can be shack in the woods with a small dungeon under it or a warehouse in the shady part of town....
