Player Houses

Post by MattFlan »

I loved the player houses in Oblivion, but haven't seen any information on them in Skyrim.

Anyone have any info?

As far as I know no direct information on them has been released, but obviously there are purchasable houses in the game.

I haven't heard, but I hope they'll be more customizable and interesting besides "The giant hunk of hollow stone that is my personal vault".

I hope that it goes back to the Morrowind way of getting your own house. (sneak up and kill the ownrer)

That was kinda troublesome...

I don't think buying the house is a good system, because at some point in the game you will have 183910830921839021 septims, and then you can buy every house in the game, but I don't think the killing owner thing was better.

Well, I suppose it could be like the other Morrowind way of doing the quests to make your Stronghold... I think that would be a bit better, because I loved the Anvil house in Oblivion based solely on the fact that it had a quest attached. So if they have you do something more interesting than just getting a lot of money, then the houses would mean a lot more.

I agree, having some sort of quest to go through would make it alot funner.

maybe there should just be chain sidequests to get houses now, since skyrim would be full of "old money" the same families/people would be in control for very long periods of time, perhaps helping a rival take the keep, while simulataneously convincing the city guards to let it happen by paying off/intimidation/speech challenge with the city guard leader or framing said rival then butchering the whole rival family(once the lord of the city has evidence enough to have it done with 3 of his "most trusted" guards) perhaps things like this would be the only way to get the better houses, other then that, make us sleep in inns in oblivion they just had to like you enough to want to sell it, or u had to do a couple quests first.. make them long, hard, and interesting

Well if the money system is truly fixed, I would prefer buying a house.

Has been confirmed, although perhaps via a leak – I don’t recall, that there is a buyable House in all cities, although what that means is open to debate.

I'm pretty sure scans on products that aren't even available yet is illegal in some manner and wouldn't be on our wiki... I would seriously think about removing that link. I had to remove links from peoples posts when the first magazine containing skyrim screenshots came out, it's to do with the fact that there would be no point of anyone buying the product if everyone was allowed to have a free look at it anyway.

Wolfie, link me to this discussion on the wiki please. I'm curious.

Thanks. For a minute there I thought the wiki was hosting scans or something... but yeah, just a discussion it seems.

Ive removed the link, sorry about that. Even if you believe the possibility that the manual is some sort of elaborate hoax, it wouldn't make sense to remove purchasable houses. You have to have safe containers to place your stuff in, places to sleep, somewhere for your spouse to live.

I hope they make them more expensive though, I don't feel like you should own a house in every city by level 10

Considering Todd Howard mentions "If you own a house" in Question 7 here:

http://forums.bethsoft[DOT]com/index.php?/topic/1207390-skyrim-fan-interview

I'm pretty sure you can own a house.

I also remember some funny glitches reported, in which Todd did own a house in Whiterun.

I think you should be able to buy a house, and a good amount of [regular] furnishings. And then houses should have certain special features that you should quest for. For example, a quest to get a range for cook, a furnace to smith, a lab to alchemy and an alter to enchant. I also think a house should have some type of monthly deduction from your current earnings, like a mortgage.

I was thinking about this a few days ago:

myself, I get a lot more satisfaction finding some awesome item, or even say 1000 monies, in a random dungeon rather than getting them as a quest reward. At the same time, things that change the game world, like becoming the owner of a house or a horse, feel very shallow when they are obtained simply by purchasing them.

In my perfect game quests should award things like higher social status, which would allow you to access new services, or tools, or homes, while the kickass equipment should be left for me to find while exploring.

Sadly in both morrowind and oblivion money is too easy to make, so there's no "accomplishment" feeling when you grind gold to buy your house. The morrowind strongholds were done better, but you could only get 1 of them. I think it would be awesome if they made it gradual, e.g. when you reach a certain rank in the mages guild you get your own office, or alchemy lab.

I want a castle. As a player on the PS3, i didnt get to experience Battlethorn Castle and am very saddend by this. I want to rule, feel like im in charge, be able to execute or tell someone to execute a thief or wrong do-er. I want servants, i want my own sigil and my own knights/guards to wear them. I want my people to bend the knee when i approach... *wakes with a shudder... how cool would that be?
