How viable will a "Monk" type character be?

Post by Frogmander »

So...After watching blizzcon 2011 (gasp! A blizz and bethesda fan! THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!) I got pumped up for a monk class..Anyone think a monk type will be viable? High movement, Hand to hand, and restoration magics. If you doubt it will be viable, than what should I be? The poll options are basically what I have been thinking of.

I'd say, Breton, there's probably a couple of spells that'll enhance your HtoH skills and what better human spellcaster than a breton? Also, what is the purpose of the 2 top options, they have nothing to do with a monk type class... thingy.

I'm guessing those are what he wants IF the Monk class isn't viable. Since ya know...that's what he says in the original post, but I'm just guessing, lol.

I think a Monk class will be perfectly fine in this game as long as your Restoration skill can keep you alive long enough for the low damage of your H2h to kill an opponent.

Using a monk might get old fast, because you'll have to be healing constantly and battles will be drawn out.
I would go with classes like knight, battlemage, crusader and knightblade.
Maybe sorcerer. Pretty much anything like a tank that is good a healing.

Has it been confirmed that punching does not add experience to the one handed category?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there isn't a Hand to Hand skill anymore, so you'll be pretty handicapped late in the game. Monks can do other things, though, like archery, and slight magic.

Yeah I am pretty sure h2h isnt a skill anymore which is why I was worried it wouldint be viable : / Though I think there are some skills that upgrade h2h damage...and yes the top two options were explained in the OP. Might not be able to do it than if it isnt very viable, unless I find some mod after the game is released..might just go with my dunmer archer/mage than : / though with you having to unequip weapons for magic that might not be viable either .-.

Its certain that H2H isnt a skill, but we don't know for sure if punching counts towards your 1 armed skill or not.

If it doesnt, thats a lot of points you would miss out on towards leveling if you only punch.

I think i remmember hearing somewhere that punching counts towards 2H and that there were certian perks in the 2h tree that are geared towards H2H fighting styles.

I so want to make a monk... More likely than not, it won't be like my modded Oblivion character (who I modded to where the animations were better via Deadly Reflexes. That character was devoted to fistfighting pirates naked by moonlight.) and I won't be able to pretend the Matrix came to Nirn. If that happens, I'm making a highwayman, swashbuckling, spell using Breton.

I don't know about a monk... I wanted to be a Nord. Just some awesome, chill dragon slaying Nord. It just seems a bit weird that the dovahkiin could be a dunmer or wood elf. I want to keep this game as realistic as I can for the start. But since Nords aren't great at magic, I like the breton too.

Well, in Morrowind how realistic would it be for an Argonian to be the Nerevarine?

Ah, the box of preconcieved notions.
To see the world in a grain of sand
And heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.

You know what? You should totally be an Orc Monk. Because then you can gore people with those massive tusks.

If my memory hasn't kicked the proverbial bucket, I recall seeing a perk that increased unarmed damage while wearing gauntlets (equal to its armor rating)

I believe that's a heavy armor perk. I saw it too.
