What was your most embarrassing moment while playing Oblivion and why?
Here's mine:
My fierce Redguard warrior just escaped the Imperial Sewers, slaying the scariest Goblins, the most brutal rats. He got quite cocky, thinking he was the finest fighter in all of Tamriel and proceeded to jump of the pier into the lake just in front of the entrance to the sewer topless. He swam forward a bit and saw a Slaughterfish (you can see where this is going...). He laughed to himself, "These are the terrifying monsters i will have to face?". He pulled out his sword and swung for the fish. The blow did not connect and the fish got a sneaky bite in. Furious, my Redguard swung blindly and didnt come close to hitting the fish and eventually the fish bit my Redguard to death. I re-loaded and to this day, I never go into that lake.
Your turn...

My most embarrassing moment? I was fighting the Uderfrykte Matron at Dive Rock and in the heat of battle I unthinkingly retreated backwards... over the edge. Yep. Mind the step. It's a doozy!
Your Slaughterfish was probably one of the ones you have to kill as part of the Go Fish quest. They have much higher Health than normal and do much higher damage per bite too. Yeah, I got caught out the same way.

I remember my first Will-O-the-Wisp, though. How could such a pleasant Disney character be dangerous? I quickly found out. Pretty much the same scenario with my first Spriggan. "Fear not, fine Damsel in distress! Allow me to save you from that nasty Bear. Oh...wait...WTF?"
And others have already mentioned Slaughterfish. I swear, if those damn things could fly, they'd be 10X more annoying than Morrowind's Cliffracers.
Yeah when i first saw a spriggan out in the woods, i thought it was some intense Kynareth worshiper and therefore friendly. I tried to go talk to it...my first mistake

The most embarrassing moment I've had in Oblivion is when I thought I could verse a mountain lion on MAX difficulty, wearing only full Fur Armour.
I died when I blocked its attack.

I did the A Shadow Over Hackdirt quest properly. When I talked to Jiv Hiriel, he told me to meet him at his house later that night, I left his cabin and waited 5 hours (until 9pm) and then - I was face to face with one of the most scariest characters ever. Those buggely eyes just staring at me.
Later, I was ashamed how scared I was then. Just killed 'em one by one without my heart going 1 bpm faster.

I used to take arrows in the knee, but then I took an arrow in the knee.
I was roaming the woods for hours, killing everything I saw, thinking myself the ultimate badass. Then I ended up falling asleep while I was playing. When I woke up six hours later my character was dead on the ground and I had no idea why. Whatever killed me didn't bother sticking around until I woke up from my nap. Worst to worse, I didn't save, and since the whole tirade was outside, my last autosave was four hours before my killing spree ended.
I think it'd have to be the time when I did this at the start of the game, before I knew about the Psychic Guards.
Step 1. Rush into a shop, and stand near the most valuable item that is closest to the door.
Step 2. Steal the item, and run out before they finish saying "THIEF!!!".
Step 3. Save outside the shop.
Step 4. Repeat.
When i first got the game i was still getting used to the controls. This happened on my first account straight after the sewers and in the IC Market District. I play on PS3 and the "grab" trigger is right behind the "attack trigger". I "grabbed" an apple i had and was hitting a guard with it for lolz. In my apple-bashing frenzy, one thing lead to another and i ended up back in the prison because I accidentally started punching the guard. Worst thing was, my friend, who is an oblivion veteran, was watching and i was getting annoyed at him for giving me advice on how to play the game

When I was still a level 1, I ran into a highwayman on my way to Cheydinhal. I told him I didn't have any money to give him, but he attacked me anyway. I was like "I can take this guy."
I decided to have my assassin eliminate the skooma gang. It seemed like a great idea, there would be a variety of new targets to stake out and I would be exploring new areas of the game. Also, it would be entirely within character for my cold-blooded femme fetale to rise to the head of the Dark Brotherhood and take on a self-imposed mission to make her world a better place by eliminating the competition.
My assassin's first target was the bosmer skooma-dealer, Nordinor. My assassin was dressed in dark brotherhood armor and and a dark brotherhood hood, she shot him from a rooftop with a poison-laden ebony arrow. The shot was perfect, the arrow came straight out of the night sky and knocked him into the alley and out of sight of the city watch. He actually managed to get back on his feet but there was enough poison on that arrow to kill him three times over and he died within seconds. Pleased that her mission had started so well my assassin turned to leave and then ... He got up.
It seems that Nordinor is an essential character even after the one quest that he's involved with is completed.
On my first time playing Oblivion on my friend's game, he made me a spell and told me to try it out on enemies. Turns out it was a 'Drain Fatigue on SELF' by 100 pts instead of on Target like I thought. I died from falling about 3 times before I realized what he did. XI
It was about 30 hours before I found the "wait" function. This is on the 360, so there were only so many bloomin' buttons anyway! How did I miss it? Hanging around behind Skingrad's church for Glarthir for 10 real minutes (in case I slept too long in an inn) was not what I would call a gaming highlight.
I am, unfortunately, without any greeting. Apologies. *stares*

Same here!

Yes, I remember embarrassing times in my first play-through of Morrowind, too. I started calling them "Cliff Racer Hat" moments. Why? Running all the way back to town screaming "Guards! Guards!" with a Cliff Racer glommed onto the top of my head!

There are elevators in the planes of Oblivion towers. You can use these to get up to the Sigillum Sanguis room. It saves a lot of time because you can skip most of the hallways. I'm not embarassed I found this out after 200+ hours because it's not even in the wiki.
Elevators?!? Useful information! Thank you for that.
My most embarassing moment in Oblivion? I once walked around with battle music for fifteen minutes without being able to find out what was following me.
Then I got bored and walked all the way to Skingrad from the IC. Then I was held up by a wolf. Just when I finished, this mudcrab arrives and kills me from behind because the wolf had caught me off-guard, and I hadn't had time to heal yet.
Because there's no fun to be found in being normal.
