I think they're just points of interests in general. Forts, dungeons, daedric shrines, standing stones, word walls, whatever the case may be.
X's on the map are points of interest?
Wow, I think you nailed it.

I think lostlast was being sarcastic. :P

Anyways, the fact that the crosses are shown on paper suggests that the places they mark are interesting, but they can't be all that important, because they wouldn't be on the map then.

what if those little red X's are world walls...? seems like there are too many for the amount of birthsigns there are.

No but seriously it could be...
I'm bad at math buuuuuut if you can learn a total of 20 dragon shouts, each of which can contain up to three words of power and not all shouts use unique word of power they could be word walls.

PLUS, there's cross right next to the place Bleak Falls Barrow should be in the game and we already know there's a wall there.

Also there is a cross at the base of the Throat of the World. I imagine there is a word wall around that area as well, considering what we know about the greybeards (or whatever they're called)

In the description of the guide book, one of the selling points is that it will show you the location of all the word walls.

Granted that's not conclusive, but it is irrelevent if the location is pointed out on the map

I do believe reading somewhere, either official or a preview, that the crosses were Talos Shrines, as hypothesised earlier on in this thread. Could be wrong though.

They are shrines in general, not only do they correlate to Talos and Akatosh shrines I found but another review said he found a Talos shrine up north in one [the one I think OblivionDuruza is refering to].
