2 - After a little while, I see a mountain pass. Two wooden towers, each against a mountainside surrounding the passage. Bandits are looking at me from up there. Oh, they’re shooting too! Thanks for the welcome party. Of course, I climb upstairs to share a moment of healthy camaraderie with them. Result: the axe outweighs the arrows (and daggers, once in contact) ... Nothing interesting on the bodies.
I go back down, wondering if I'll always be greeted like that, when I come across four hooded guys who took the opportunity to go through unarmed. Opportunists. I engage the dialogue. Ouch. Elves (Thalmors, to be more accurate). Cocky [@#$%] They try to send me away. In the options I see “You really seem proud of yourselves”. It should be funny, let’s try this one. Of course, they get angry. They remind me how much they are superior to us lowly humans. But they keep talking. Great, I like to tease them. I don’t know how, but we ended talking about religions. I want to be a pain in their asses, so I say I believe in Talos. Not a good idea. Taunting four elves isn’t wise, and I end up dead on the road.
I’m now heading towards west, happily slaughtering any wolf or crab who hinders my path.
I love the sounds of this. I so want to join the Thalmor and overthrow the Empire! DLC/expansion I'm hoping! :Twisted Evil:
10- And what a city ! Guard are charging an old wooden house. They scream. I finally see Winterhold. Well, its ruins. Or to be more accurate, one ruin, the rest is under water. A road seems to lead to a fortress stuck on an eroded peak, frankly ready to sink into the sea. For once, I will follow the guards. They are in the lobby, going around looking for something, ready to attack. Everyone is telling me to speak to the jarl.
Not a friendly one … people only seem interested in the Winterhold College (Skyrim mages guild)… And he thinks its because of the mages the sea submerged his city.
16 - And just behind the hill, Dawnstar, a small town (open, a dozen homes), filled with fishermen and miners. Rebels’ raids hit the region, which explains the legion camp next to the city. I learn more about the facts behind the story. The chief tells me a story about the villagers suffering from nightmares every night. There’s work for me at the mine. I go inside, but it’s already time to stop …
Sigh …
a Treasure Map 1 (it looks like the treasure maps from Red Dead Redemption, with a drawing that shows the place you should go to).
Because of its central location, Whiterun is a bit like the Nordic Imperial City. And is more than worthy of that title. Firstly because of its waterfalls and the flight of stairs that goes up to the Jarl Palace. Then because of its atmosphere, its agitation, and the palpable tension between Gray-Mane and Battle-Born, two clans that seem to fight each other for the city control. A passerby ask me which side I belong to, I pretend I didn’t hear anything. Whiterun is impressive because of its majestic buildings, especially Jorrvaskr a long hut whose roof is actually a drakkar’s hull. It is the Companions’ HQ, and a place where the demonstrations of manly friendship are popular. I go down to the basement to meet the leader of the Companions. The latter is seated at his table, conversing with one of his henchmen. I interrupt him to tell my story, and ask to join its guild. That leads to a fight against a dark elf in the backyard, just to assess my ability, and a rite of passage at the foot of a monumental statue (eagle? I’m not sure).
Back into Whiterun suburbs, I see a cart. For a few gold pieces, the driver can take me anywhere I want in Skyrim. Let’s go to Winterhold then (after a quicksave), I heard I would find some dunmers in this city. But I only find ruins, snow, and a Solstheim-like scenery. A few buildings survived, but most of the city is now under water, because of something the mage guild did. The Jarl sends me on a quest to retrieve a stolen statuette. I set out, faithfully following my quest marker, and stumble upon a Guardian Stone granting me the power of the Tower. I can now pick any lock I want. I also saw a few horkers. Anyway, I find the bandit camp and take the statuette back. But when I bring it to its owner, he doesn’t even flinch. I guess the quest wasn’t completely implemented yet.
I load my quicksave back, and chose another destination. This time, direction Solitude, whose proximity to High Rock, and therefore Daggerfall will probably please me. In fact, it is the most "classic" of the cities I view so far. The most “medieval”. Also the most heterogeneous : I think all the races from Tamriel are here, as well as many Imperials. A great wall surrounds the city. It makes me think of Daggerfall. On the town square, I can witness an execution. A few people gather up. The crowd is discussing. The poor guy on the stage was apparently an accomplice in the assassination of the High King of Skyrim. Gloups. I try to intervene, but he still ends up beheaded. I quickload. Tough luck, pal.

Not surprisingly, given the number of Imperial in the streets, the Legion has its headquarters here. On a table, something also saw in Whiterun’s Companions Guild : a map, with flags of different colors. I can’t help thinking about them being related to Steam Achievements (or Xbox success), some of which involve the capture of cities. And since there is very little time left, I load my backup save made in Whiterun, head towards Bleak Falls Barrow and the main quest that the battlemage gave me some time ago.

translation from a dutch computer tech / gaming site tweakers(dot)net

site: http://tweakers(dot)net/reviews/2345/hands-on-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim.html
Spoiler:
A roleplaying game is only any good if it sucsedes in giving the player the idea that he himself is the main charicter. so not "the pc is eye to eye with the dragon" but "I am eye to eye with the dragon". if that feeling can make or brake a game, than we thing TES V: Skyrim will 'make' it. because after about two and a half hours we stood, armed with some spells and simple weapons, eye to eye with a dragon on one of Skyrim's extensive plains.

ofcource as a gamer you don't say "no" when Bethesda Softworks invites you to London to let you play three hous of Skyrim. Crazy actually, because the disadvantages are legion [wouter215: are many], you have to get out of bed early, you barely heve the chance to eat properly, you are home late and meanwhile 'spoil' one of the best rpgs of the year for yourself, because we already know the first few quests. Still we could not resist Skyrim, because the gameworld is again very immence, the setting is very immersive, and who woulnd't want to fight a dragon?

creating a character

before you get that far, you walk trough the caracter creation part just like Oblivion, and just like in Oblivion it will keep you busy for a while. experienced rpg players are often quite picky when it comes to caracters. Every race has advantages, and that is just as well for the classes. recently we reported about someone taking the effort to post all the choises, we think this is a good time to link to that post once again, saves us some work. [wouter215: link leads to a forum post with some of the perks]

thanks to Sammu [wouter215: the player i guess?] we can jump right in to the wide open world of Skyrim. our session began according to the developers about 1 hour after the beginning of the game. missing the beginning is pain sometimes, because several npcs in the gameworld reference to earlier events. slowly it becomes clear that we missed something about a dragon attack, because of that there is now a rumor in Skyrim that dragons - a now extinct creature - have returned. We in London did not get far enough to see the Dragonborn grow in it's role, but that you get anything to do with the return of the dragons is kind of general knowledge

First foray into new game world

the later following fight with a dragon was still far away when we set our first steps into Skyrim. for the experienced TES-players it's a known phenomenon: you are in the middle of nowhere, your compas gives some icons to witch you can walk, but you are free to go and stand where you please. we decided to look around us, to the screens of give or take 12 other playing journalists, and were overloaded with divesity. the one reached an ocean very quickly, the other got smacked down by a, for his character, way to strong beast and another obediently followed the quest line that already has been seen in previous presentations.

small action, big consequences

it was not our intention, but more or less we accidentaly ended up in Riverwood, the village that we all know from the presentation we saw durin Bethesda's 'Big F*cking Gathering' line-up event last spring. before starting the hunt for a golden claw we solved a small side quest. an elf and a human were after the same girl and both wanted us to deliver a letter full of each others nasty text, signed the name of the other. to us the choice of who could 'get' the girl. we chose the elf. after that we got the option to ask the elf to help us in our quest. that's how a trivial quest became one with big consequences, because the elf remained on our side until the fight with the dragon became fatal to him. a free companion for 2 hours, and it cost os maybe 2 minutes.

the presense of our elf made our journy trough Bleak Falls Barrow a lot easier. the elf was aperentaly of a somewhat higher level, because the arrows he fired caused much greater harm than anything we did. a handy guy to have around then! just as handy is that Skyrim has a commandsystem. you can give your companions orders. we regularly sent our elf ahead into the hallways to test for traps. among other things our elf got hit with a door with spikes in it an a big axe on his head. despite all that our companion held out for over 2 hours.

uprising

after we found the golden claw in bleak falls barrow and completed the quest, we went down the path towards the first truly great city of Skyrim, Whiterun. although we have not gotten to much of the main story, it became on the way to whiterun clear that it is hommeles[wouter215: i dont know the word for this, something on the lines of racial/idiological tension between varius factions] in Skyrim. a part of the Nords no longer want to be ruled[wouter215: as in: "do as we say"] by the imperials, and have risen to a revolt. the jarl of whiterun - the leader of the city - is still loyel to the imperials, but that doesn't count for everyone in his citywalls.

Well renewed, well removed

within the city walls we found a very interesting store. you are probably fammilier with the crafting system in mmorpg's likw WOW or LOTR: online. something like that is also in Skyrim. in the workshop we came across, we could, if we had the right ingredients, make all kinds of armor and weapons, or improve those we have. we walked after a few more minutes away with a even sharper sword and an improved bow, that both do more damage now then before.

investing

the crafting system is part of a much broader economic system, that seems alot more complex then oblivion was. during springtime we wrote about the simple economic result of the quests that you do. help a lumbermill, there is more wood, arrows for your bow are cheaper in the shops of the town. the shops can also give you personal discounts. this you can achive by completing quests for the shopkeeper, or by investing in the shop. how the latter works we havn't seen yet. what is clear is that there is a minigame with wich you can influence the shopkeeper by for example telling jokes, did not make the transition from oblivion to skyrim.

that also counts for a number of other gameplay-elements that anoyed gamers, most well known of wtch is the leveling system of oblivion. all the enemys of the games were scaled to the level of the player. so a level 20 player had stronger enemys than a level 10 player doing the same quest. that system has changed in skyrim. everyone in the gameworld has a level that is independent of the player. this however could cause skyrim to feel more lineair; there just are areas you just can't go to from the start, because you won't be strong enough to win in those areas. that's how we landed in an area with frost trolls, who killed us in one hit.

finishing moves

before that time we had given alot of less impressive opponents a quick death. the fighting system has not changed shokingly much since tes4. your melee-attacks cost stamina, and your magic cost magicka. the dragonborn does have number of spectacular 'finishing moves' witch with he kan kill enemys in spectacular ways. but it is not entirely clear to us what triggers these moves; is it something you do? or is it 'at random'?

fight with a dragon

just as important as a good economic system or fighting system, is th gameworld itself. cyrodiil was big, and skyrim is that to. Whether the game world exactly the same size or slightly larger or smaller: fact is ti's huge. after just under 3 hours of gametime we have only seen a fraction of the world en just one big city, while there are many other cities to be explored. just viewing the vast, varied world will keep you busy for hours.

impending doom

sooner or later the dragonborn will have to live up to his name, and in the short play session we were confronted with probably the most spectacular part of skyrim: a fight with a dragon. after the jarl of whiterun sent us with his bodyguards ti investigate if there indeed was a dragon had been seen, we were, standing on an abandond tower on an open plain, frightened by impending doom. the music got more intence and louder and from the mountains came indeed a dragon charging down.

that moment alone was beutifull. rarely have we seen a more developed dragon in a game, gameplay-technically the fight created a challenge. the dragon rarely stood still and mostly flies in circles around you, bombarding you and every one else with fire. evere one in a while it lands for a moment, wereby we immediately shoot a couple of arrows in his head. that process repeated untill the dragon could fly nolonger and we could kill it on the ground. that by the way did not work in one go; at our first attempt we got to close to it's head, it grabbed us with it's mouth and flung us away tens of meters.

impressive

the fact that you play as the dragonborn makes the fight with the dragon not just a fight. dragonborn understand the language of dragons and hear what they say. the beutifull, immersive music that directs the scene, makes the whole only more epic. it wasn't by definition the most difficult fight we had in skyrim, but absolutely the most impressive

afterwards the dragonborn 'sucks up' the soul of the dragon, what is in fact currency to buy shouts. you learn the shouts by reading them in ruins, on walls with dragon language inscribed on them, but can only use them once you unlock them by paying with a dragonsoul. we unlocked the 'push' shout, witch is essentially a sort of force push. Unfortunately our game session came to an end after the fight with the dragon, so we couldn't experiment much with this.

conclusion for now

another disadvantage of an early playsession with a good game: no matter how long they let you play, it' always to short. wile we feel as if we just started, Bethesda had put us in a taxi to the airport. skyrim will have its faults, but still we were blinded by all the beauty the game offers, topping it with beautifull, majestic dragons that you will meet from time to time. that and the disire to explore this yet unknown world, makes us really look forward to the 11th of november 2011.

i think the only new thing is that you can improve bows at the blacksmith workshop...

One thing that I've noted about a few of these previews is that the writer often seems to follow an almost standard path (Eg: Found a hunter, wemt to whatever town, did certain things in town, went to the cave to get the claw, fought same type of creatures...etc). But, having read 7 so far, there are a couple with extra surprises and info. Like the ign.com on (#7), that describes in greater detail the alchemy and destruction magic/leveling systems.

Would it be too much to ask the OP, whom I assume has read each one already, to give a description/rundown of what is discussed...just for the benefit of those of us who want NEW info and not the same stuff we've already seen or heard about?

I understand totally if you do not want to do this and do not have the time, but it woud be interesting to have a description of the general idea discussed in the previews.

Otherwise, I'll just keep reading anyways. Good job on the thread River! :)

I'm a bit to lazy for that! More of a info gatherer than commentator! If someone would like to do it and post it I will happily add to OP. :) I'm to busy looking for more info to post here!

Totally understandable, and you aren't lazy at all. You seem to do allot more for these forums regarding posting new items of interest than most!

Again, I appreciate the time and effort you put into your threads. If I find a bit more time, I'll try to contribute to a rundown of the situation....instead of whining about it! :P
