Texas Chainsaw massacre? I still don't understand why people actually enjoy watching people be murdered in sick ways just for entertainment :?

Shock, incredulity, dread, horror. Some of my favourite movies are those who can shaken me, stick me to the screen by atmospheres to be drowned in. And sick murders can be an effective tool for this. Not just pure gore, but coupled with music, camera angles, visuals, feel, it can add to the atmosphere greatly. A lot of Italian horror films use excessively violent or gruesome deaths, but they help build this horrific, otherworldly and nightmarish atmosphere. But it's clearly not for everyone. As some don't like romantic or action movies, some people don't find any appeal in particular moods or things like that. And I'd say entertainment wouldn't be an entirely accurate word. Well, I bet some people find an immature fun in watching spectacular deaths, and I certainly do, but I'd say it help builds a specific aspect of the film which leads to you obtaining entertainment from the film, if that makes any sense.

For example, some of the most shocking deaths I ever saw were not gory or excessively violent at all. One of them was particularly sick, but it wasn't graphic. What was truly shocking was how cold and "true" everything was, you got glued to the screen, further drowning in the grim atmosphere of the movie. Those deaths certainly weren't "entertaining", but they helped make the films entertaining. But yeah, some deaths an entertaining value, usually by how extreme and unlikely they are, like this one. But at the same time, it added to the very apocalyptic feel of the movie. The music was overbearing, deaths unforgiving, you sensed that the "heroes" were into something they couldn't escape unscathed. Or there's this one from an Italian horror film, when someone falls off a ladder and has his face eaten by spiders. You see the spiders slowly climbing on the paralyzed, but still conscious unfortunate. You hear some unnatural mechanical noise, and then the spiders eating his face. Everything is slow. But it helps accentuate the very nightmarish and otherworldly feel of movie, as other non-gory elements like the way the sound is used.

Why do I always seem to write essays...

Moon, Alien, No Country for Old Men and 2001: A Space Odyssey are personal favorites of mine.

None of these are particularly action-heavy films and certainly not love stories but they're fantastic nonetheless. Watch them, at the very least, for the cinematic education.

EDIT: Having now actually read parts of this thread, I see most of these were already brought up by others before. Excellent. :)

Alien is one of my favourite movies ever, and 2001 is certainly a must-see for anyone who considers himself a movie fan. Otherwise, being a sci-fi fan I really need to check out Moon, and loving the few Coen brothers films I saw (True Grit, Fargo, The Big Lebowski), I really need to check out No Coutry for Old Men.

By the way, The Big Lebowski is one of my favourite comedy along Big Trouble in Little China (John Carpenter), which is obviously a must-see, during a rainy and foggy day/evening.

I think the reason for this is:
The people of today play violent games and watch violent movies. Why are these sinister games and films like Grand Theft Auto and Saw popular? How do they affect the youth of the culture? Will they create psychopaths who will go on murderous rampages?
No. They will not. Often the games and movies we watch today takes us away from the everyday life. You can be an evil assasin in a game like Oblivion or watch a movie about a maniac going insane with a chainsaw and feel entertained. Or you can play a game like the Sims in which you get a job and start a family... The latter can be quite entertaining, but when it comes to getting a job and creating a family - that is just something which you should do in the real world instead of in a virtual world. Nevertheless when it comes to violence and gore - you should not be inspired by violent games and movies to go out and start a massacre. To me it seems as people who enjoy the violent emotions gets a certain satisfaction from playing and watching violent games and movies. Of course there will always be those who can't tell the difference between what you do and what you do not, but that is how the world is.
