Re: Skyrim Bretons and Nords
I'd imagine you'd be using a Nord for a celt character.

You can always RP a way to make a Breton a Celt.

Hmmm...Nords=Vikings/Norse, Bretons=Celts?

Re: Skyrim Bretons and Nords
There's no solid Lore saying what is what. We had a fairly interesting conversation on the subject of real world influences on races a little while back. I would personally say that Breton's have a stronger French/Anglo-Saxon influence, and that the Nords have a strong Northern/Viking influence + a less apparent Celtic influence. Just my thoughts though, although the Nords do have a 'Woad' power. Here's the link anyway.

Re: Skyrim Bretons and Nords
A lot of Nord engravings/artwork are Celtic. I'd never view a Breton as a Celt; they're more like Normans.

Re: Skyrim Bretons and Nords
The word Breton relates to the Celts. I think that Bretons were intended to be Celtic and Nords were intended to be Viking.

Re: Skyrim Bretons and Nords
Breton could also be a throw to Brittany in France, seeing as the people of that region were known as Bretons, and the Bretons of TES seem to have a French/Norman/Anglo-Saxon influence.
Re: Skyrim Bretons and Nords
Breton refers to the original Celtic (and welsh speaking) inhabitants of the british isles! eventually, during the 5th century, they were pushes further westwards towards the more hilly unfavourable lands by the invasion of germanic jutes, angles and saxon. many also fled overseas to north-west france, hence the name Brittany. so in short breton is the answer to your question. hope this helps

Re: Skyrim Bretons and Nords
But the cultures of the Celts and the Bretons are different, the Bretons of Nirn aren't exactly two cultures. Further, although the games draw on real world peoples and cultures, I wouldn't go so far as to say that there is a direct correlation between real world peoples and TES races. The sophisticated Daggerfall culture doesn't really resemble the image of Celts on the British Isles, although Nords in Morrowind do wear war paint (like the Woad used by the Celts, specifically the Picts) and even have a power called 'Woad', which we know is a name associated with the Picts, who were themselves Celts.

Re: Skyrim Bretons and Nords
Bretons -> French
Nords -> Any nordic country
Imperials -> German? British? Their culture has references to the Roman empire, though.
I think we can agree that none of the races in TES have identical real life counterparts.

Re: Skyrim Bretons and Nords
I'd say you'd be playing a more Roman and aptly named imperial sort of character if you chose imperial. Let us not forget though, Cyrodiil was full of these mixed variations of humans and elves. Perhaps race need not play a part in what RP life you choose.

Re: Skyrim Bretons and Nords
If you look at the names of the characters of both races in Oblivion, their real-world equivalent is pretty apparent.
Bretons have french-y names (Antoinetta Marie, Gaston Surille, Timothy LaRouche), while Nords have more scandinavian names (Hrol Ulfgar, Hjolfrodi the Harrier, Ulrika Ulfgar). If you're going for a celt, I say Nord all the way.

Are face paint options unique for each race? I thought they'd be pretty much identical across the board, similar to Dragon Age's face tattoos..

Re: Skyrim Bretons and Nords
Aggh I promised myself I wouldn't come back here until I finished Skyrim, but I was forced to because I wanted to make a thread about Bretons and celtic culture. I belive that Bretons are pretty much based of well Bretons (Celts converted to christianity that lived in what is now France.) Look at the Skyrim presets the hairstyle and general appearence suits that of celtic people as well as the french sounding names. Nord are Vikings.
So we have come to solve every squabble in the village personally?

Possible. But not an indicator that that's 100% what you may think it is.Assassin540 wrote:Don't think so look at the race presetsdubq wrote:Are face paint options unique for each race? I thought they'd be pretty much identical across the board, similar to Dragon Age's face tattoos..

Sorry? Celtic names sound more like a mix of English, Irish and Latin. I can't see how you could interpret French names to be Celtic.Knight Captain Kerr wrote:...as well as the french sounding names.

Re: Skyrim Bretons and Nords
My guess is that the tattoos are for all races but they just used certain ones on certain races to differentiate them.
