I love a good open-world RPG that has a great history. While I do love a lot of lore, all I really need from a game is a real solid plot and some nice sidestories. I don't care too much about various folklore within the game and all the grimy little details you can read in the 200+ books. I mean, I'd rather listen to people talk about it within the game, and feel like you are part of that history. Fx I loved how FO3 and FO:NV mentioned your progress in the radio, and some other local lore. It makes me feel more drawn into the game - the 'here and now', you know.
Good answer Conzeq and one I know many players share.

Lore is not for everybody but I suspect those who like lore play their games for longer.

Also, I feel now that Beth has made combat dynamic enough. What I mean is that there is an IGN article talkin about how DarkSouls<Skyrim.
DS is not a true RPG in every sense of the term but it does have that Ninja Gaiden style dynamic combat. Dragon Age 2 tried to do that as well.
Obviously, Beth could not afford to remind people of Oblivion/Morrowind combat.
While Skyrim doesn't need to have Ninja Gaiden combat it does need to be visceral.
Most of an RPG is tension, the combat should be a release. Whether you kill or get killed.
Watching the released footage and seeing the Dohvakin(sp) absorb the dragon's soul was exactly that!

that ign article [&@%!] me off.
i'm a big supporter of ign, i go to them for all my reviews, along with others just to confirm the review, generally everybody agrees.
i'm not one of those guys who complain about every review.
but this is getting NO support from me, it's arrogant fanboy bs.

trust me, i played demon souls and loved it, but skyrim isn't even out yet, how can you know dark souls is better than it?
their stats were like "multiplayer" which is arrogant.

whoever made that article sucks.

but let's not get off track, i wanted this game ever sincefallout 3 was announced. i even predicted it, didn't know it would take place in Skyrim, but knew they would announce an elder scrolls 5 at the spike's VGAs, so applaud me... jk
Not changing this until Skyrim comes out, and even then, I'll probably be too busy... playing Skyrim...

It will give me another trivia thread with which to build a reputation in :)

In truth, though? A combo of all three. I'm not necessarily anticipating the lore developments that occur in game itself the most (though I am intrigued by them too); Skyrim represents the largest gap between mainline TES games to date, and I can't wait to see the lore that's developed in the intervening time.

I've always liked the more complex rpg components- number crunching for optimized stats and the like, and Beth rpgs always feed my inner nerd. I'm somewhat leery of some of the simplification that's been done, but I'm cautiosly optimistic that by trimminng away some of the excess skills, Bethesda will make the remaining ones far deeper and complex to master. It remains to be seen whether I will appreciate the rpg elements of Skyrim enough for them to be a reason to buy the game, but so long as we don't end up with strictly linear level progression (which at this point in development is only likely to occur in my deepest darkest nightmares), I won't complain.

I've never been blown away by Betheda's ability to tell a story in their games (they're not bad by any means, but they aren't fantastic either), but damn if they can't build a fantastic world and universe to lose yourself in, and Skyrim, at the moment at least, looks like the best reprensation of that world to date.

I'm a bit worried that they are focusing on the gameplay a bit more than the story.
While all the gameplay improvements look great, I think in the next next elder scrolls they should relax a bit on the gameplay and focus more on story.

That ALWAYS happens with games. The squeal is always weaker story, stronger gameplay.

I think focusing on gameplay is good too. If it had an amazing story but crappy gameplay, they would do worse than if they had really good gameplay and a mediocre story. I think the story will still be really good. I think I saw that they actually started writing the story right after oblivion.

giskard, currently you don't get a post count on the skyrim forum as almost all things posted here are predictions, hopes and other blabla ^^, after 11.11.11 this sub forum will give post counter too.

No, it means only the posts you make after the release will count towards post count.

Open ended games definitely attract a certain type of player, or games you can play indefinitely.
