Demon's Souls... was exactly that. Very frustrating. But once you mastered it it was a rewarding experience. One of the best games I have ever play.
Games like this are very unforgiving and make for a great challenge.
What they don't do, is appeal to a large audience, unfortunately.

Re: I think Skyrim is hard
While I loved Demons Souls so much, I wouldn't call its difficulty frustrating. It was always your fault when you died, and thinking before you do anything will save you 9 times out of ten. I would LOVE if Skyrim had the same difficulty. BUT I think it would be almost impossible for an elderscrolls game, with the current combat system, to be that difficult without being unfair. See: Oblivion on the hardest setting. Not fun, not challenging, just a waste of time taking advantage of a poor combat system with ridiculous enemy health and damage.lostlast wrote:Demon's Souls... was exactly that. Very frustrating. Re: I think Skyrim is hard
As far as I'm concerned this is good news. Though I haven't tackled Oblivion at greater difficulties like some of you I like the sound of what Beth has done. Make it take some cues from FO3.
The Gamesradar reviewer likened the giants to the deathclaws in FO3. In FO3 you learned real quick not to F around in their area until you were sufficiently badass.
Seeing as how the giants are usually docile, herding mammoths and whatnot, they should have a mean streak when provoked. Only dragons higher up on the food chain.
Re:Demon's Souls. That game is great but it';s like Ninja Gaiden with a bit of RPG elements. Combat is definitely the main element there.
Elder Scrolls allows for more choices in "conquering" an area. Who you are is as much fun as what you do. Not so with DE, IMO.

There are checkpoints for when you die, but not after every turn so I found myself having to go back through the same parts of the temple a few times before finally getting to new checkpoints. The developer assured me this was because I was too low level for this area, not because there were other, more strategic ways to get through. He was probably just being nice.

Basically confirmation again that areas are levelled and designed for certain levels.

Re: I think Skyrim is hard
all along they have said the levelling will be more like fallout new vegas/fo3 than oblivion, which is cool
Also, the fact that level 50 has been mentioned as a kind of ceiling suggests they will have planned the difficulty of monsters and challenges quite well to that point, oblivion and morrowind didnt have a 'nominated max level', they both just went on going and the monsters stopped getting noticeably harder after a certain point. I found oblivion lost a lot of its challenge at around level 20, so i am looking forward to a whole 50 levels of good hefty fights
i really like the idea of having places 'locked' to you until you get powerful enough; i also really like the idea that a powerful character can wander into an area where they are much stronger than those around them.. this all adds an extra dimension to the games immersion imo, and its key to role playing

Beth has spoken about how it's more a set up where certain areas are a certain difficulty regardless of your level. The example being of a group of bandits all having light armour when you find them at level 3, but still having that same type of armour when you're level 16, rather than them suddenly investing in the best glass septims can buy.

yeah, that's it, you might do a bit of roleplaying and decide to hand over the cash at low level, but a few months (and several levels) later your character can decide to come back and turn the tables on them..S13Kuro wrote:Beth has spoken about how it's more a set up where certain areas are a certain difficulty regardless of your level. Hip hip HUZZAH! Its about time, no more bandits running around in full Mithril/Glass armor demanding 100 Septims even tho you have to hire the adoring fan to carry your coin purse it has grown so large.S13Kuro wrote:Beth has spoken about how it's more a set up where certain areas are a certain difficulty regardless of your level. Good to hear there's some challenges. That means later, after a hundred or so hours, the game won't be a walk in the park....

VERY EASY-------[]-------------------------VERY HARD
did we forget about everyone's favorite tool already, as it is I play New Vegas and Fallout 3 on easy, its still a challenge at time, depending on where you go but I don't feel like wasting 400 caps of ammo on 4 enemies when I got to get from Rivet City to Arlington.
Sides You still died a lot in any of those games if had it around the easy level, deathclaws are still deathclaws, and Umbra will always be Umbra, plus Id rather have the slider back then just the five levels, i always played at a 40-ish% if 50 was default in Oblivion.

Crank up the difficulty for Skyrim. Take out the slider difficulty. If an areas to hard, leave, until you are good enough to take it on. Games just ain't hard enough. Don't have any user options to pick and choose the difficulty.

Exactly, I actually agree with Wolfie, sometimes you want different things from a game. Sometimes you want a challenge, other times you just want to let out some steam. Choice is the key, and I think Bethesda understands this, which is why they've gone to lengths to allow players to change their minds, like redoing the levelling and class systems.

I'm a console player, tell me what my options are if they simply kept it at "extremely" hard? 90% of games have difficulty settings.
I guess they don't have cheats like they used to.
up, down left...... what was it again?

At the very least, the difficulty should be locked when you create the character.

So...there's nothing stopping you from entering dungeons at a low level, leave, then return 20 levels later and curbstomp everything inside?

Re: I think Skyrim is hard
I haven't seen an RPG in as long as I can remember with locked difficulty. Not since, like, Zelda. They're all functionally at locked difficulty for me anyway, because I tend to forget there is a slider or whathaveyou. If anything, I make them harder. Diablo II was much more fulfilling on Nightmare (I only got about halfway through Hell, but, truth be told, I wasn't overly-fond of the game itself) and I'm working on Mass Effect on whatever the hardest difficulty is now (a little late to the game, hah).At the very least, the difficulty should be locked when you create the character.
The problem I have with TES' idea of difficulty is that it doesn't make sense. Arbitrary increases in received base damage and decreases in damage output don't make the game "hard" in a constructive, or even logical, way.
Some enemies just shouldn't scale with difficulty. There's no reason why a guard's steel longsword (the same longsword I'm carrying) all of a sudden does 6x more damage, and mine 1/6th. (Rats too, for that matter)
And simply increasing the damage other creatures do while leaving their resistances and weaknesses unchanged not only doesn't change the pace of the game, it leaves said enemies vulnerable to the same old parlor tricks.
I think Beth could learn a lot about "difficulty" from Blizzard/ BioWare, honestly. I want to see daedra scale if anything, as they're supposed to be the most powerful creatures in the games anyway. Random elemental resistances, and gaining several on each enemy at higher difficulties would keep players on their toes. Or if lore is the problem (odd to see a daedra 100% immune to Frost and Shock, but not to Fire) then at least scale up their cannon resistances with the current difficulty level.
Simply scaling up HP is also bad. I believe they should calculate HP for NPCs the same way it's set for the PC anyway, so, for higher-level enemies at higher difficulties, simply scale up all of their Attributes, to achieve increases in all derived values.
Scale up enemy magic damage too, of course. In a a game where every damned enemy isn't melee-based (Oblivion), it wouldn't make sense to give a spell-slinger 6x (or whatever the increase would be) psychical damage only.
Enemies gaining resistances and immunities, Attribute increases, Spell Absorption, higher rates of self-regeneration, etc. And only implemented on the 'right' enemies (i.e. not NPC people, guards, rats n' crap), that's what I want to see.
And for god's sake, don't make difficulty about making the PC weaker, that happens by itself when the rest of the game gets harder.
Not that any of that will ever happen. And certainly isn't happening this time in Skyrim.
Anyway, I'm sure there'll be a slider. If it's "too hard", use it. 'Nuff said on the matter

seriously, lostlast, the hell is your problem, most people play games to have fun not competition or challenge, sure its fun every now and then but it shouldn't be around every corner.

I think a hard game is fine. I miss that sense from Morrowind where attacking the wrong dude meant trouble. Oblivion allowed you to fight practically anything and be okay. I realize I'm a hero, but I don't want to start out killing everything. I want to have to run in terror from something because I am a noob.

And I am not most people... I am people, and I'm sure there are plenty of people that play games like Skyrim for a challenge, atleast in some form or another. Challenges are what makes TES games fun, hell, any game for that matter.
I keep re-reading your post to try and make sense of it... It's up there as one of the dumbest posts I've read.
