When Skyrim comes out...

Post by Thegreatkirlee »

...will you still be playing on oblivion?

I'm just wondering if there's anybody else who'll still be (religiously) playing Oblivion when Skyrim comes out. I'm pretty sure that I'll still have unfinished business on Oblivion, and I figure that I may as well keep playing Oblivion instead of Skyrim (while waiting for the price to come down :D ) seeing as I'm sure that I'll find it very difficult to pick up Oblivion again after playing Skyrim.
Anyone else?

P.S. I'm sorry if this is meant for the Skyrim Forums, I wasn't sure, and feel free to move it if you think it's in the wrong forum. :D

I'll probably play it a lot less, but that doesn't mean that I won't play it at all. I still play Daggerfall despite Morrowind and Oblivion being superior in many ways. Each game has its own strengths and weaknesses and each is for a different mood. If I want a deep and good role-playing experience I play either Daggerfall or Morrowind. If I want fast(er) paced action I play Oblivion. If I want a story experience I play Morrowind. I'll play Skyrim for whatever unique Skyrim offers.

I still play Arena and Daggerfall occasionally, so I probably will still play Oblivion as well.

I don't think I will. I don't think I could ruin the great memories of oblivion by going back to it when Skyrim comes out. Also, I'm RPing that my character in Oblivion will somehow before Skyrim, and his child will be the guy in Skyrim.

I think we'll all be too engrossed into Skyrim to play Obliv anyway :P

I probably will try to keep playing Oblivion, as I keep playing Morrowind, but I myself don't have a lot of time to game in my everyday life as it is, and with Skyrim and Reckoning coming out this summer, I'll be balancing 4 great RPGs. I guess I'll be too engrossed in Skyrim over these summer holidays, but maybe in the future, I'll come back to games like Morrowind and Oblivion, after the initial Skyrim 'shock' is over.

I'll might still play Oblivion, most likely to finish the main quest or something like that.

More than likely for the sake of lore and such. I wont be [&@%!] about having to finish oblivion before starting skyrim, in fact I can guarantee that wont happen, but I am certainly not tired of oblivion and much for me to learn still.

I won't be purchasing Skyrim until it's been on the shelves for a good time and has been thoroughly play-tested by consumers. I really don't want to reward Bethesda if they've released another fragile glitch-fest like Oblivion, especially if there's another ticking time bomb in it like the ABomb Bug.

I still play Morrowind, but I may not play Oblivion, mostly because the draw was the improved graphics, voice acting and combat...all of which Skyrim will hopefully improve upon.

It depends on how good Skyrim is :P. If Skyrim is even more simplistic than Oblivion, then I'll most likely switch back to Oblivion/Morrowind.

That's what I did when I started with Oblivion. Most criticism I read on forums about Oblivion have been fixed by the hand of time

Bugs? 99% are fixed with official patches, unofficial patches and things like the stutter remover heap replacer
Graphics 5 years old? Qarls textures and a view distance mod fix this
Abomb? As long as you're on the PC you can fix it
Repetitive dungeons? Shivering Isles has new dungeon/cave textures

I wont purchase Skyrim immediately either. For all the above reasons: unfinished biz with Oblivion and bugs need ironing out with Skyrim. I have no doubt that when I start on Skyrim, it will be a LONG time before I go back to Oblivion.

Same for me. I'll wait for the GOTY edition. By then I should have enough saved for a new computer to run it on.

I don't think i'll be playing Oblivion all that much. I bought Oblivion back when it was first released, and have proceeded to play it to death for the last 4-ish years.I think its safe to say iv'e done everything sooooo many times once Skyrims out I wont be seeing Oblivion for a long long time.

Nice to see some people stand where I do.

Though I do like the random non-game-breaking glitches and bugs in Oblivion. You'll all think this is stupid, but I like games that aren't completely polished. Though I hate game-breaking glitches. They annoy the hell out of me.

I'll probably stop Oblivion for a good year or two, unless Skyrim for some reason is a total fail of a game (extremely unlikely). I just like to focus on a few games, and for such "similar" games, I wouldn't want to switch between them. Just like I wouldn't want to switch between halo 3 and halo reach. It might feel weird at times.

I also like to focus just to concentrate on getting immersed and getting to know the game. And since it's a new game, it'll be getting most of my attention.

That was my original plan, getting the GOTY Edition (not presumptuous at all of me :P), but I'm just that excited about the game, and I found a really good pre-order deal, so I went with that.

Thing with Skyrim is that I'll probably have a character or ten to try it out, then leave it for a bit and then come back to it when DLC comes out. I'm expecting the DLC to be fairly easy to access considering technology now days.

I consider it unlikely I will play Oblivion. Not sure if I'll continue to hang out in the Oblivion trivia thread or not. However, I can't stand playing Morrowind any more, even though the world is way better than Cyrodiil. The visuals and the game mechanics are just too severely improved in Oblivion (except for the whole world-levels-with-you thing) for me to handle Morrowind any more.

And before anyone says that I'm spoiled and I can't handle playing old games, I'm currently in a playthrough of Might and Magic VII, which came out in '98.

I still have the cloth map of M&M VI - mandate of heaven "Enroth"
Also VI came out in April 98, VII came out in 99

Dispelling the off-topic-ness: upon reflection, I believe that I won't go back to Oblivion, Skyrim would have to be worse in every aspect for me to go back

@evil-i: Seconded without hesitation. Bethesda's track record for buggy games and lack of support isn't good. I mean, ceasing support for Oblivion when over 1000 bugs still existed was just complete disinterest and totally dismissive of the loyal fan base who've HELPED them succeed as a business.

If it wasn't for the tireless modders (and I SALUTE you) who've done their best to FIX Bethesda's quality assurance goofs, I've have binned the game years ago. I shelved Oblivion for over 2 years because it ran like a one-legged dog on my old video card when other games like Doom 3 performed WELL. I'm ONLY playing it NOW because of essential mods that make it at least halfway tolerable. I consider myself lucky I chose a PC as a gaming platform, and feel TRULY sorry for the console owners who've bought a bucket without a BOTTOM and the welder's decided to retire! At least the PC is a "DIY welding kit" because of the Construction Set.

This time round, I ain't playing the donkey blindly trotting after a carrot on a stick and going over a cliff. I don't care HOW much they tart Skyrim up to look good. I ain't dipping my hand in Bethesda's bin again until I'm ASSURED that what they've thrown out is gourmet smoked salmon fillet, not stinky fish tails! The "Oblivion fiasco" is why I gave Fallout 3 (same game engine) a miss and, if they follow a similar pattern with Skyrim, it's doomed to go down without a trace like a ship they forgot to weld the hull plates onto.

Like you, I'm gonna wait and see, possibly until Skyrim ends up in the bargain bin (no profit for Bethesda) and the modders who are our REAL support team have had some time to work out the kinks. Until then, I'll stay aboard the SS Oblivion which has taken me 5 years to weld the hull into a tolerable state of repair where it doesn't leak like a sieve and can actually sail for a few hours without sinking.

Don't get me wrong. I love RPG's. I love the Elder Scrolls series because of it's Lore and depth. I love admiring Oblivion's beautiful landscapes. I love spending hours dungeon delving, etc, despite the sameness of the dungeons. I love helping other Oblivion players avoid the 5 years of technical frustrations I've had getting this game to run halfway stable and enjoyable. But I trust Bethesda to write stable bug-free software about as much as I could fart an 8 on the Richter scale and knock their office building off its foundations. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

If I have to be honest Oblivion wil be out the window for me, if Skyrim lives up to whats its made out to be. To be Honest I have slipped from palying Oblivion a year ago, its now collecting dust, I think the reason is I have done it all, theres nothing left to do and with pictures and videos of Skyrim coming out by the day, Oblivions broken levaling, poor graphics, Doughy weird people, painful animations etc, its just not aceptable for me, at the mo I'm on Fallout 3 having a wicked time.

Don't think I'm getting at Bethesda its just how I feel (i wish I didn't feel it...but I do)
