yes, but don't ask me where, i think it was one of Toddsters video interviews

there's no question about it ever being dumped imo, all it can do is improve the game for those who want to use it, and can be ignored by those who don't

The details are fuzzy and murky at best but i my understanding its, Fast travel like oblivion, option not to fast travel, and then carriages that cost money to allow you to fast travel. Like combining morrowind and oblivion

You can only travel to places youve been to, like in fallout 3.

Why would you want to use fast travel if the environments look so stunning? Not to mention the dragons you can meet on the way.

You're halfway through a cave, ran out of spare carrying capacity, want to save a couple things and store them in your house thats 40 minutes away on foot, and want to finish the quest youre doing

In that case, just as in every other RPG, you only keep the best items and leave the rest behind. Things like fast travel and quicksaving make me lazy, so I try to avoid them.

That's the beauty of it. Someone might not want to play it as a hardcore RPGame so they have that option.

I don't know where but I thought I heard the normal fast travel was Gunna cost money with a few factors such as distance and wealth of city if it is a city your going to. but then again this could very well have been a fantasy in my sleep.

Yup, nothing wrong with extra options. I hope that we can turn off slow-mo kill cams and map markers though (menu option).

Umm, you might have heard it on here, some guy was proposing that as an idea, which nobody really wanted it but him. Then again he was suggesting it cost thousands of septims each time, so maybe thats why nobody was into it.

There are gonna be carriages which cost money, but the bring up the map and click a place you've been fast travel will be free.

Exactly. If you want a more immersible fast travel experience use the carriage otherwise just click on the map and go.

I pretty sure they stated in an interview or a review actual fast travel will cost money. I will find the review [I think it was an italian article, BootySweat might no more], but I'm 90% sure they said fast travel would cost, but they didn't clearly state what it would cost. Money I assume.

as far as we know they are only in morrowind buit there is nothing that i know of that says they cant be there

Do any of you have any links to the interviews you are refering to?

you may be right how ever, its worth noting a lot of what he says has not made snese (due to translation or what not), translation of the article some times calls it the elder scrolls hot pursuit, catholicism take it as it is
http://forums.uesp.net/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=23921

It says it cost but never says what it cost or where he went, nor dose it
Fast travel is only possible if you've visited that place before, also applies for the major cities like Whiterun.
so he may of meant the carrige system as we know its fast travel and cost $$$, beside that
as this came up to translation as it also seems to be missing some translations for certain words.
Certin words? like carrige maybe?
There's already a topic about how paying for fast travel does or does not make sense. ;) However, while the originla article claimed fast-travel would cost a fee, it wasn't clear what they meant, since the carriage system is a fast travel option as well. If they already explained what they meant, this should be clear now.

Yeah this is extra confirmed today via a Pete tweet.
RealNQD Not Quite Dead @DCDeacon A question about the Skyrim compass: it's been rumored that players may turn it off. Could you please confirm this as correct?

DCDeacon Pete Hines @RealNQD Where was that rumored? I'd like to see.

@DCDeacon Pete Hines @RealNQD Ah. They're referring to being able to turn off quest targets (which you can do), not the compass (which you can't).

Thats pretty cool

I kinda like the markers since i'm just a lowly OB player, but I know a lot of ES players will appreciate that.

Well, IMO you can use fast travel only within one region in wich you actually are (Eastmarch, Rift, Falkreath etc.) and you can cross the region border with the carriage system, wich they provide in every major town, or by foot.
This would give some more depth to the game. knowing that skyrim is huge, and its not very much realistic, when your character walks across the map (evading every mountain and foe without a single scratch).
And we even know that certain regions are at each others throats (provinging some difficulties with the carriage system), so maybe you cannot travel to X region from Y region if they are at war with each other, or maybe you can be smuggled through the borders, (for a fair price of course :D)

Re: fast travel

Post by Mattbott »

i always thought the fast travel debate was a bit of a red herring, there are other aspects of the game which are far more 'unrealistic' (when you go to the inventory menu mid fight and glug down 4 potions of healing whilst an enemy is hitting you on the head with his axe, for instance) but we seem to be totally fine with them
Spoiler:
dont you think that there should be a mechanism where you can avoid stomping across a wilderness full of wandering monsters if you want to, no strings? Ok, so dragons are plaguing the land but Skyrim like other places is supposedly inhabited by people going about their business, being a travelling merchant would have a zero survival rate if there was no fast travel lol

But it's nothing to do with realism or immersion, it's a game device, just like in Star wars the screen cuts to the next bit when they're on the space ship instead of showing Luke pack his bag, talk to customs, buy some duty free booze, and hand his boarding pass to Chewie.

Fast travel works particularly well in TES and doesn't need justification imo cos it doesnt break lore or immersion at all - TES are literally The Elder Scrolls, ie the reality of the game lore is actually what is written on the scrolls in-game, and changing the writing on them actually changes events, as seen in the Grey Fox quest.. so if a hero fast travels in the game, why not - that's exactly what he did? The Elder Scroll of his life would say "Dovakhin travelled to the North, past the warring factions that occupied that region", it doesn't necessarily have to describe every step
