No weapon degradation?!?!
xboxdailynews[dot]com/2011/08/28/skyrim-will-not-have-armour-and-weapon-degradation/
First: I don't know if this is true.
Second: If it is I don't agree with this choice of direction. This mechanic has been in TES for a long time and I would think most people like it.
Lastly: ITT do you agree or disagree with this? Discuss.

They said that it probably won't be in Skyrim, not that it absolutely won't.

Pete did say this on twitter:
This is discussed little in the weapons thread.
But in the more recent Q&A Beth said there was a small possibility of it being in but at the moment they were concentrating on the smithing skills instead.elderscrollsftw Meat @DCDeacon Hey Pete, I'm just wondering, do weapons and armor degrade in Skyrim, like with their own health? Also, is there visual damage?
@DCDeaconPete Hines@elderscrollsftw No and no.

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
Eh, the way I see it is,
If it's in there, I'll pay someone 2 gold (or whatever) to repair it, and be on my way.
If it isn't in there, I won't have to worry about it, and I'll just disarm my opponents instead of degrading their weapons...(Which I never do...)

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
The Armorer skill in Oblivion was basically this, the higher your skill, the less amount of dedicated space in your inventory for hammers.
I get that on its face, the idea of stuff degrading was cool, but there isnt really that good of a way to implement it.
Either you force everyone to go back to a workbench, which involves leaving the cave when youre 1/4 of the way through, 1/2 way through, etc., which is rediculous, or you have to stop and "hammer" after every fight or every other fight.
I gotta say at first I was a little disappointed in their decision to change it, but now that i've thought it through for a few minutes I back them completley, and think its yet another improvement

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
The way I look at it however is instead of being lazing (that is to say if they actually got rid of it) and just up and tossing the idea they could have improved on Oblivions system.
Personally I like using hammers but they could have toned down how easy it was to damage equipment, because as mentioned it was tedious to have to constantly repair after every battle.

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
In oblivion I even made my mages have armorer as a primary skill just so I can repair my enchanted weapons and clothes, so I dont care to much if its out or in. Its just tedious.

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
They could've easily done something better than remove it. Perhaps bring in whetstones to sharpen your weapon on the go. That keeps it sharp and then you just go to a smith once you get into town to keep the weapon in good health.

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
perhaps but if it came down to armorer or smithing I'd pick smithing.

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
It does seem strange they'd completely delete degradation. So we can now swing a sword 100 times and it's as strong and sharp as when we started?

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
Well they would basically have to have added 2 more skills and perk trees if they kept armorer with their new system.

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
I think getting rid of weapon degradation is breaking the mold in a great way. Instead of using smithing to "Fix" things, just use it to make things better! Weapon degradation was just a pain the butt, this fixes it.

Yes because god forbid there be any difficulty in combat beyond what to swing at.

There's no additional difficulty in combat, as long as you bring a few spare hammers withSpiney wrote:Yes because god forbid there be any difficulty in combat beyond what to swing at.
Thats why it was axed

Then they didn't need to axe it.soda popinski wrote:There's no additional difficulty in combat, as long as you bring a few spare hammers withSpiney wrote:Yes because god forbid there be any difficulty in combat beyond what to swing at.

They easily could've changed it for the better.

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
Well I also think that the perks they had in oblivion were about as many perks as you could jam into that skill, and the perks are kinda their focus for leveling this game.Spiney wrote:Then they didn't need to axe it.soda popinski wrote:There's no additional difficulty in combat, as long as you bring a few spare hammers withSpiney wrote:Yes because god forbid there be any difficulty in combat beyond what to swing at.

Well perhaps the post I made earlier would explain things for you. I'll simplify it.soda popinski wrote:Well I also think that the perks they had in oblivion were about as many perks as you could jam into that skill, and the perks are kinda their focus for leveling this game.
Weapon + Whetstone = Sharpened Weapon
It's more realistic, doesn't require a skill, and still holds the concept of weapon degradation.

Don't you know what a whetstone is? It's a stone used to sharpen weapons. :Plostlast wrote:What in the hell? ....... I'm lost.Spiney wrote:Weapon + Whetstone = Sharpened Weapon

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
Unfortunately, that'd only make sence for bladed weapons. Then again... I haven't seen much in the way of all-out blunt weapons... But unless they've done away with warhammers... therein lies the problem.Spiney wrote:Don't you know what a whetstone is? It's a stone used to sharpen weapons.lostlast wrote:What in the hell? ....... But at least there'd be something.

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
I'm glad its gone, I would not like the idea of the stone, for one it should be a skill, you be surpised how hard it is to sharpen a wepon right and how long it takes
besides that its not like how moveis and game show it, there is a lot more
I'm glad its gone, wepoens can last a very long time anyways

What? you never played monster hunter?Unfortunately, that'd only make sence for bladed weapons.

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
I am no big fan of hammering my weapons/armor all the time, but not real happy to see another rpg element tossed.
Beth is apparently trying to put their resources into better gameplay elements (a good thing)
The constant management of menu things like this never bothered me in rpgs, it kinda immersed me further into my character.
Are we giving up character immersion in these rpgs in favor of the dev's using resouces/manpower elsewhere in the game?
New Vegas didnt ax the weapon maintenaince from FO3, they furthered it and added weapon mods.
I like my weapons/armor in rpgs. I want more ways to interact with them, not less.
There are other threads about this "trend". What's gonna be left for ESVI? It'll be in 3D, have Gran Turismo-style pedal/levers periphial, and no menu at all.

Re: No weapon degradation?!?!
i think they should have equip degen but no fixing it(besides a professional smith npc) that way you cant go around in they same armor for months. I like the idea of switching armor mid dungeon cuz of my old one finally falling apart, also with the level system using all skills to lv u up picking up heavy or light armor mid dungeon wont be slightly negative for you
