That and they could use their illusion skills to aid them in killing targets. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Morag_Tong

Their Favored skills show they're more than just people who can just "kill".

EDIT: And some more Dark Brotherhood civil wars; "In 3E 421 a Dark Brotherhood member named Greywyn Belnwyth began his own crusade against the Dark Brotherhood. Believing to have been ordered by Sithis to remove all non-vampires from the brotherhood, Greywyn founded an organization known as the Crimson Scars. His attempt failed however when a member of the Crimson Scars betrayed him to the Black Hand. The Black Hand swiftly retaliated and murdered the Crimson Scars. The final fate of Greywyn, or his supposed sanctuary, is unknown."
You have to remember the whole war between MT and DB started out as a civil war if you call the crimson scar thing a (civil war) more like a traitor who was quickly cut down before he could grow the MT could have done that with the DB but they didn't

Dark Brotherhood contracts are not that difficult unless they are solely based on stealth or assassinating a hero. (Like when Heselth did not hire but COMMAND the Dark Brotherhood to kill the Nerevarine. Showing the Dark Brotherhood is not only a blood-thirsty guild but also easily controlled by certain political figures)

I remember the only hard part of a DB contract was infiltrating the palace while trying not to kill the guards.

But other then that; the DB merely kills commoners.
Infiltrating Imperial Prison? Sneaking past that Mercs army not to mention the DB trains all day and the DB takes patience you have to sit and wait in that guys house in bruma for hours and when you have to follow Adamus and memorize his schedule then take him down and when you have to find that High Elf than follow him and wait to kill him

The Dark Brotherhood split off from the Morag Tong, we just don't have a coherent description of 'how'.

The 2920s series, it was shown that the Night-Mother (original one) was a Dunmer Thieves Guild member.

And she split off from the Morag Tong. Others believe that the Dark Brotherhood simply was in alliance with the Morag Tong, but they broke off when their relations soured during the Second era. (I'd guess when the Morag Tong utterly annihilated the entire Royal dynasty of the Second Empire. Earning Morrowind it's freedom, and the Morag Tong a name to both respect and fear)

I say the DB was originally apart of the Morag Tong but split when it was more about money for one than the other. While the Morag Tong became more legal, more honorable; the Dark Brotherhood spread its illegal cause elsewhere since they could accept any contract.

This meant petty conflicts could be resolved easily, bloodily, and for simple coin. Soon the Dark Brotherhood became an international illegal organization by the near end of the Second Era. (Hence their stay in Daggerfall, and using the War of Bretony to their advantage)

Then it was around worship around that time, as they worshiped the founder (Night Mother - to which other organization leaders of different sects were also a 'Night Mother' whom commanded a listener to carry out her duties) and Sithis. Maintaining old Altmer traditions (As the Dunmer were originally Altmer), and concepts of Chaos.

But instead of the Velothi people and worshiping daedra to benefit the people, they simply did it as a dark cult to influence members and justify their killing of innocents.
Sneaking past that Mercs army and they train all day
Mercenary Fortress whom were guarding a sickly old Mercenary leader. And the training is a script, if Bethseda had the scripting tools they have today? We can see Morag Tong training, hold sessions, praying to Mephala and all sorts of things.

Back to topic, I see the Morag Tong as a more beefy assassin, relying more on technique and strength instead of stealth to kill their targets, I'd imagine that prior to Morrowind's tragedy, the MT were better armed being publicly funded and able to do business normally, instead of shady dealings...
What technique?

Yeah your right about the training but I mean c'mon the Shadowscales they are taken when they are babies and trained that's proffesionalism but yeah I'd really like to see MT in Skyrim so I can see how they have changed and what their armour's like and how often they train and all that

Shadowscales are taken as a probably a sign of a pact between the Kingdom of Argonia (which was independent at the time of the Second Era) and the Dark Brotherhood.

To show that the Royal Heirs of the throne would not be killed nor Argonia targeted they give up children born under the Shadow to the Dark Brotherhood in order for their deal of the pact to be fulfilled. The DB's part is simply not killing Argonian officials in Argonia.

This probably continued as the Morag Tong's reputation made the Argonians fear that the Morag Tong might kill all their heirs than a threat from the Empire.

EDIT: "Although the Tong is largely restricted to activity within Morrowind Province, due to the fact that no other Imperial governments recognize them as a legal faction, this does not mean that fleeing Morrowind will protect you. Tong executioners have been known to track their prey all across Tamriel, thanks in part to an extensive network of informants and contacts maintained by the Guild."

Your probably right about all that but you can't argue with this that had nothing to do with the other the Shadowscales are still very deadly assassins because they are trained from when they are young there for more training more lethal
