Grammatical Errors?

Post by POMC S117 »

So, I was on another Forum. I was writing my Fanfic and I just decided to venture over to another sub-forum. A user was raging about a feature in a game that was glitched for him, however, no-one else had encountered it. Instead of acting maturely, he began to insult everybody and called us trolls. He even reported a person who was telling everybody to report and move on.

He made a mistake and I corrected it and then he went crazy. He said that all my sentences were grammatically incorrect, obviously in words that contained more offence. Can someone please tell me if this is grammatically incorrect, or was that person just a troll.

Me: "Bypassign? Please use better grammar and stop insulting people just because they have been fortunate enough not to encounter the glitches that you have seen."

His reply: "LOLOLOL I MISSPELT A WORD AND HE CALLED IT GRAMMAR! Dude, you're an idiot. My grammar is flawless, what you should have said was, use better spelling. Clearly it was just a typo and I know how to spell though, so you are stupid. Your grammar is horrible. These glitches I have stated are quite common, and every single non-troll on bungie.net has seen them."

This was, of course, on the fabled, and feared, Bungie.net, a home for trolls and a place where you will find very few people who can seperate facts from opinions without insulting you.

Although the guy was a complete idiot, he was right in saying that it was a spelling error and not a grammatical error. A grammatical error involves such things as the incorrect use of, or lack of punctuation, incorrect arrangement of words, and many, many other mistakes. Apparently there isn't even a set definition of what grammar actually encompasses. I've been told by one English teacher that I've written something incorrectly whereas another tells me it's fine. So there's an element of opinion in it as well. Lecture over.

Anyway, if I see a discussion like that or a comment clearly intended to provoke or insult on a website I tend to ignore it and not take the bait. There are plenty of bored idiots out there looking to get a kick out of annoying other people from the safety of a computer chair.

I'm not sure what kind of answer you were hoping for, but this is what I came up with :?

That's what I was expecting, but is my sentence grammatically incorrect or was he off his rocker?

He was off his rocker, and I think he might have been using the hit-back-with-whatever-your-aggressor-just-said thing, like small kids do and like adults do when joking. The classic "You're stupid." "No, you're stupid." "*Sigh* You're a complete idiot." "No, you're a complete idiot." kind of thing, when the opponent is either too [&@%!]-brained or too lazy to come up with a different comeback.

He said he was a "US Marine". When I checked, US Marines don't go nuts when someone has been fortunate enough to not encounter any of the glitches that they have.

Well, he might have been an angry soul just looking for an argument.

Some people/teachers will say a certain sentence or phrase is wrong because of how it phonetically sounds...it may be correct, but because of the way the syntax plays out in their head, it seems wrong

If he was being an A, then you had every right to put him down, however pointing out such a small spelling mistake is just going to make him blow his top (Should have just told him to stop insulting people and leave it at that; by throwing spelling/grammar into the mix, you gave him ammo)

That being said, his grammar is horrible: he overused punctuation to try and seem like he knew what he was doing, for instance the sentence "My grammar is flawless, what you should have said was, use better spelling" - the second comma is misplaced and causes an odd break it the sentence "have said was........use better spelling" it's awkward and should have been "..what you should have said was 'use better spelling'"
Also he didn't need the "though" after spell, it's redundant. He continues to make extremely short sentences that, while not wrong, are lazy and indicative that he is trying to look like he knows how to use punctuation.

Chaos, I didn't give all of the sentence. I told him to stop insulting people.

Him after someone said they haven't come across any glitches: "Lying doesn't make your pen1s grow."

You put the stop insulting part up there, I'm saying you shouldn't give him a way out of behavior by giving him something else to jump on.

He was being a D, you don't need to point out a minor spelling mistake to tell him to stop.

If he's a dick, tell him so; Take the high road, don't try to tack an irrelevant insult onto a legitimate "Cut it out" post

Just a warning. Do not go on the Bungie forums any time soon. It is a breeding ground for trolls, highly opinionated people, people who call anyone who believes in a religion stupid, egoist teens, pompous prats and very few good forum-goers. I only go on it because I have a Fanfic there that I feel tied to.

I used to frequent their forum...not something I'm proud of...there are no friendships there...only hatred...

I only have a select few friends. They only go to the Gallery section to read the Fanfics. One of the bad things about it is that the forums all seem to be segregated. The Off-Topic section arranges "attacks" on the Reach section.

Mmmm, Bungie.Net, I have been a member there since '06, though my original account isn't active anymore. The only thing that has changed are the skins and mods, and the mods can only do so much. It has gotten worse, but not as much as some think. Some, like me, try/tried to make it a more friendly place. Only a couple voices have so much of an impact though.

That said, it's always differed in the time and forum where the hatred and stupidity goes on. The Flood though is the exception, only a couple good topics are seen among the swarm of pointless topics. Community forum, and the underground one tend to be the most clean, as it's favored by the more sane members. Ahhh, but this is off-topic, lol.

Yeah, I'm not surprised by what you encountered, the dude may have had a point, but he was being irrational and rude. Next time, ignore him and report him, and leave without saying a word.

This thread counts as flaming. Even if it's another forum and even if you say it's full of trolls it is still not OK.
