Where can I find coal?

I've successfully barricaded myself in. But it's dark.

Coal is like stone but has dark dots on it. Its most common on mountainsides. If you cant find any build a furnace and smelt a log with wooden planks. That should give you charcoal which can be used instead of coal

Mining rocks. When you mine rocks, you get Cobblestone.

I think, once everyone is a bit more established, I might try to start a working economy.

Also, anyone know of any good texture packs that make the building materials (Glass, Wood Planks, etc.) look better, but not the landscape?

I got very little help at the start of Minecraft. I went to look around, then it got dark so I dug a big hole and cried in it all night. Overtime I got better and now I have an underground base with a magma lake, connected to my mines and a big walled courtyard with a boat launch. Minecraft is awesome.

I'm building a harbour with a little pool where the boats are. There's going to be a door that you can open and close, letting the boat in and out!

I swear by this chart, it has helped me so many times.

Every pixel is a block, the number is the diameter. My castle there is a 31 diameter on the bottom and a 21 on the upper tower I think.
