I recently tried playing Morrowind without much success. I turned the difficulty way down and still couldn't get by the first bandit I faced. The combat and magical system are way too complicated. I don't want to have to wonder if my spell will go off or how I'm moving around to get my weapon to work to maximum effect.
From what I've heard the background story and the world itself is more ecompassing in Morrowind. I never got the chance to find that out.

Re: The Best TES Game?
I came into the series from oblivion, and just bought a copy of morrowind on ebay maybe 6 months ago.
There is a lot that is cool about the game, but taking such a leap back in terms of technology was hard. And i hate swinging my sword and clearly hitting the guy in the dome, and being led to believe that i didnt hurt him. I also didnt really think the dungeons were all that interesting.
Anyways, i got maybe 25-50 hours into it, and then i went on some quest that was a ways from town, and went back a different way then i had gone to the dungeon. Well i ran into those damn cliffracer things and got eaten, and i hadnt saved for a few hours so I had to reload, which kind of frustrated me.
Then i wandered off into this grey volcanic area and couldnt find my way out without getting killed, so that was another couple hours wasted.
Simply moving around drains my endurance? I'm guessing there wasnt a major uproar when they made that less spreadsheety.
The journal was also really annoying.
Eh, i mean i get why you guys like it a lot, but its hard to step backwards in terms of technology. And i just really loved oblivion and give that my vote.
Though i strongly suspect that skyrim will quickly become my favorite game by mid to late 11/12/11
