Having trouble installing on linux...

Post by PinballWizard »

Ok, so I've been trying to install morrowind through wine. It seemed to go ok, the installation went through fine, and now I got a shortcut linking to morrowind. When I click it, the launcher saying play, unistall, data files, etc. opens up. But when I click play, I get this error.

I installed it to /.wine/drive_c/windows/program files/bethesda softworks/morrowind. The CD is in the slot, I used the setup.exe file that is on the CD through wine but it still is giving me trouble. Now I also have the .iso files from the four discs I have (morrowind, bloodmoon, tribunal, and the construction set - it's the GOTY version). I son't know if that can help or anything but i need my computer to recognize i have a cd in it, whether it's virtual or not.

Either way, this feels like it's the last hiccup, but I just don't know what to do :\

Oh, and I'm running ubuntu 11.04, fully updated, fully upgraded. My specs are more than enough to play morrowind.

I have both. My old discs were really worn down and i like to make new copies so they're fresh blank CDs so I made iso files out of the old ones, and then burned them onto new ones. The new ones are the exact same thing as the old ones. And I get digital copies out of it.

All right so I finally got it installed. But I'm going to uninstall it right after posting this

The game slows down to a snail's pace every time i look at a person, menus fail to open a lot (like, the one that pops up asking my name), when i try to exit it freezes up my computer. I might run programs through wine in the future, but I think a game this massive is just too much for it to handle. Ah well, it's not like I hadn't already played morrowind to death anyways. Back to oblivion I guess

I guess I do now

What do you suggest then? I mean, that's what's recommended on the morrowind:linux page...

This is a brand new, freshly installed version of ubuntu 11.04 (new computer, i installed it myself)

I literally just finished up transferring all my data to it so I don't really feel like wiping my harddrive for another installation, which I just did a few days ago. And I got the latest version of wine straight from their PPA / repository. :|

Hmmm.... i might just do a dual boot for XP and ubuntu... Don't know why i didnt do that in the first place 0.0

keep a partition for windows and its gaming monopoly, but do everything on linux because LINUX RULES SOOO MUCH. i do hate windows though. and macs, lol macs are a hundred times worse.
