Truly "Assassinating" Someone.
So I just started up a new game and fancied playing an assassin, so I did so. I was on a quest. It was a pretty early one but I won't spoil anything. Anyways, I go into a room to confront this guy and I knew he was going to attack me (I reloaded the game because I messed up pretty bad) and thought, "Hey, this is a pretty good time to try to assassinate this guy." So I go ahead, hide, and pop an arrow through his skull. Anyways, a guard comes running through the door that locks behind you when you come in (seriously?) as if he had some psychic senses and arrested me.
So I guess my question is, is it truly possible to assassinate someone without every guard in the vicinity instantly knowing about it? Also, I noticed that if you shoot someone from the shadows and they don't die, they INSTANTLY know where they were shot from and come beelining towards you. Any way to get around this and idk... be sneaky? -_-;.

Stealth my ass. Id rather just pop a massive fireball instead of shooting and arrow that either way wont do much damage, and will blow my cover.

Pretty much. I mean, my arrows do quite a bit of damage but what's the point of it when they still know exactly where you're at? -.-Standarduser wrote:Stealth my ass. Id rather just pop a massive fireball instead of shooting and arrow that either way wont do much damage, and will blow my cover.

as long as you don't get caught pickpocketing or kill a guildmate 100% chameleon keeps you from their gaze.

I would use 100% chameleon to remain undetected, but you should never assault/murder someone outside, as the psychic guards will almost certainly notice it.

Magic makes you easier to detect and doesn't get a damage multiplier. At high level of sneak you can hit an enemy multiple times and they will just stand there. Also at high levels of alchemy you can kill almost anything with one shot.Chameleon is not as necessary as people think, a good sneak level and a short term invisibility spell does wonders.Stealth my ass. Id rather just pop a massive fireball instead of shooting and arrow that either way wont do much damage, and will blow my cover.

I heartily recommend getting the Hatred's Soul bow from the oblivion planes. Especially if it's charged, I found it did wonders for one-shot kills, at least on my level 1 file. Still not sure if that'll prevent the guards from knowing though.
Re: Truly "Assassinating" Someone.
If you kill an enemy with 100 responsibility - a guard for example - then you are immediately detected.

I don't understand how alchemy helps you do more damage? Are you talking about using it to make damage-enhancing potions?Penguin _Overlord wrote:Yea psychic enemies are a pain. My advice is raise your sneak and alchemy. That way even if they detect you they'll die before they can do damage. Using the most powerful arrows and bows at your disposal will help too.

OT: I am also a big fan of stealth, and this really bugged me. Here are some tricks:
-Hotkey an invisibility potion to use right after you kill somebody
-Use the command humanoid spell to lead your victim out of the sight rang eof a guard, and kill them there
-If you don't kill the enemy in one hit, you will probably be detected. If you do kill in one hit, however, you can attack people in broad daylight with guards around (just make sure that YOU are not in the guard's sight) and get away with it.
-My personal favourite way to assassinate is to steal the victim's house keys during the day, and come in at night when they're sleeping and get a swift and silent headshot. They don't make any noise, and nobody will know.
-If you can't kill in one hit, the bound dagger spell comes in very handy since you get a very high-end weapon and the time limit doesn't matter much since you will get a 6x damage bonus for the sneak attack (melee weapons get 6x).
-If you want to kill someone indirectly, use the rage spell on them (or frenzy) to get them to attack someone else (like a guard) and they will die in the process. Killing them now does not count as murder.
-If you know a guard is waiting outside to get you, hide all your stolen items in a container and pay the fine so you don't lose them. Come back later for the items.
And like Penguin Overlord said, high sneak DOES make a difference, just keep training it and you will notice.

Is there any way to deal with guards that bypass locked doors or detect you murdering someone in a separate zone? For instance, killing someone in a mausoleum.

Not really, the guards and probably all npc's can "see" your bounty so to speak. They can bypass locked doors?

Yeah.
Explanation in spoiler:
Speaking of locked doors, I really wish there was a spell in this game that let you lock a door. It would come in handy that often, sure, but it would be GREAT for dodging guards.

Are you playing on Xbox/PS, or PC. If PC, you can use the console command "lock" on a door to lock it.

Guards can't come won't know if you kill someone outside of their FOV unless they have time to shout (i.e, you don't kill them in one hit). Just use a sneak attack + silver arrow (or higher) and you'll kill them in one hit if your your agility and marksman level is adequate.OtherworldOdd wrote:Nah, xbox.

Yes, using poisons on your arrows will ensure your target dies before he can even make a move. Using triple damage effects you can make a minotaur lord look like a mudcrab. Plus you can enchant your bow to make your shots even deadlier. I made a poison I call the F bomb with expert equipment. Fire dmge+ dmge health + dmge magicka + silence, it can nerf spell casters and kill them before they can speak a word. Also you should look at the wikis useful sneak potions that could help as well.don't understand how alchemy helps you do more damage? Are you talking about using it to make damage-enhancing potions?

Xbox.
I saw on the wiki somewhere about putting invisibility on a bow. How does that work? I can cast the invisibility spell but it won't let me put invisibility on my bow. Do I have to have a certain soul level or is it something that's just doable on the PC?

That particular issue is well known. You have to talk to the guy first, THEN he can be killed. The game hasn't adjusted his aggression yet, so the psychic guards of Cyrrodil count it as assault.OtherworldOdd wrote:So I just started up a new game and fancied playing an assassin, so I did so. Don't quote me on this, but I think if you're sufficiently hidden and you kill someone in one hit, anyone else who saw them die but can't see you will not attack.
I recall sniping a beggar from the roof in Bravil once, and the guards just kind of shrugged and didn't attempt to find me.

Yesterday upon the stair, I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today. Oh how I wish he'd go away!

But if you go talk to the guards that witnessed the death, they will arrest you for assault (40gp) and not murder.DeadlyPerfume wrote:Don't quote me on this, but I think if you're sufficiently hidden and you kill someone in one hit, anyone else who saw them die but can't see you will not attack.

It's best to cast a charm spell so that they let you slide before talking to any guard - just incase.
