We could consider the Good Fallout series (Fallout I-Tatics) had the ability to kill children and become known as a 'Child Murderer/Killer" which utterly destroyed your reputation with most cities.

Yet I didn't hear many complaints about it; because people didn't take it silly. Or maybe they were so much into the game they didn't notice.

But really children have been the strangest thing to see in a Elder Scrolls game. They didn't even exist in Arena or Daggerfall. I just hope they don't look ugly >BU
in FO3 they have weapons in Wittle Wamplight and it was not fun to encounter invincible creatures with wazer wifles.
Easy; Bethseda made super-children. Fallout children wouldn't know how to use guns, much less laser tech that would fry their skin off.

Or, you could just implement a harsh version of this for attacking the children.

Personally, I would'nt kill children even if I could. But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be a "nice" feature to add to the game. It just takes away from the realism for me. I understand why they wouldn't allow it however. But on the other side, I think parents should probably not be buying these games for their children anyways if they don't like it instead of complaining about it.

I actually find it quite amusing, that when I think of "who would go around murdering children anyway?"
The most obvious answer is: Children of course! So maybe it's good that you can't kill them.
Imagine being a parent, and getting a phone call from school, "Umm hi. I don't want to alarm you, but little Jimmy wrote a story today in which he single-handedly murdered 300 children with a metal fork and a Frost Damage 10-45 on touch spell. WTF?"

It's actually pretty disappointing that most parents regard all video games as children's toys and don't pay attention to ratings. They complain about what game makers put in their games. Well did you ever think that maybe they weren't making this game for your 7 year old?

I'm also astonished at how only certain things will trigger a "mom-revolt." Grand Theft Auto can make a game where you can kill cops and hookers, but if they put actual nudity in the game then that's crossing the line. 10,00 moms proceed to get out their torches and pitch forks. "No body breaks the law on my watch!" lol.

I've always hated how "bubbly" certain games were such as the Halo series. Darker games that actually make me feel emotion or conflict are always my favorites.

To be perfectly honest, I would rather have no children at all than to have immortal ones. In fact, if the game had immortal children, I'm pretty sure I would put off buying my Xbox 360 & PS3 copy of the game and just get the PC version so that I can get a mod that removes children or makes them killable.

You can mod consoles, or at least get mods for the console.

As ABK said, if you feel that the only thing that stops you killing real children is by killing virtual children then you need help. Personally, I think it would be a much worse torture to orphan them in the cold! But I'll only do that on my crazy assassin. :Twisted Evil:

Wtf is wrong with you people? Using "immersion" as an excuse for killing children is bull. The fact is killing children will not and should not be excepted. Even if you could the disposition all npcs should be locked at 0 and you should marked to be killed on site in all cities. Forcing you to reload a previous save if you want to have any interactions at all. I'm usually an open minded person but the murder of kids should either be impossible or have terrible consequences attached. I share a system with my little sis and I won't expose her to that.

Hear, hear!
The system in Fallout works fine! The only way you'll notice the break in immersion is if you're effed up enough to attack them. Short solution? Don't attack kids.

I agree, I'd like the game to have no children rather than immortal ones. Once again, I wouldn't kill them anyways but suspension of disbelief, you know?

Anyways, I was just playing Oblivion and this guy details a story about him murdering a five year old Nord girl at her birthday party. That's messed up.

Yeah, children won't be kill-able. The reason for this is the AO (Adults Only) rating. Walmart and many other store simply won't stock AO games (not to mention the possibility of some countries refusing to give the game a rating).

Personally, I don't care that much. Killing children doesn't interest me (I have trouble being evil), though I do understand that killing a kid in a video game doesn't mean you'd kill one in a non=virtual world.

Why is killing adults ok but killing kids not?

From a moral standpoint, i would never do anything that my character does, but im allowed by the various governing bodies to do so, unless it is killing kids? F that in the A. God is no more or less present in a fully formed human than a nascent one

Soda, do you really need me to tell you why killing adults is okay - from a gaming point of view, that is - and it is the opposite for children.

Personally, I want children in the game. In Oblivion I was like: "Where in Mehrunes Dagon's buttocks are the children? How are the adults alive with no children?"

I don't like how everyone uses immersion as an excuse for to add or take away everything. If I wanted to play a rapist and used immersion as an excuse so I could molest women in game, I be looked at funny. But going around clubbing kids like baby harp seals is ok :| ? I just say any time you try hit a kid, the says the nine knocks the weapon from your, they are not pleased with your actions.

Increased immersion can be attained by other means than killing children. I'd prefer to have killable children but it's not going to happen, for many reasons. So I'll just ignore the fact that they can't be killed and won't even try. I'll immerse myself with all the other small things that Bethesda added. Like cooking. I can already taste the Horker stew ^_^

Mars, that is a fair point. If the only way to make yourself feel immersed in the game is by killing children, then you're playing the wrong game. Cooking, jobs and realistic movement makes immersion, not murdering children.

It would amuse me if a game gave children supernatural powers of punishing you badly for ever wanting to harm them.
Like superb stealth detection, running fast as hell, squealing for a big bad Nord who punched you into pulp if you even raised your weapon.

I like having kids in games, how they're zipping around towns and being lively. Unlike real kids, you can just turn down the volume ;)

No-one's suggesting there should't be consequences for doing it. The point is that by making a group of characters arbitrarily invincible you break from immersion; a great big unstoppable dragon can pick up a giant and throw him away or wolf down a couple of guards, but if he steps on a child then it'll be unharmed?

Considering how easily it'll be removed by the modding community, it's not like there's really any reason to add invulnerability to them in the first place. It's not like what people want to do is to run through a town swiping the heads of children left, right and centre; parents and dutiful townsfolk, along with guards etc., will all presumably intervene if you're attacking children, just like attacking anyone else indiscriminately.

There are other potential problems as well; if a child sleeps in a house with their family, and you have reason to kill one of the parents, then what happens if you aren't able to kill them silently? The arbitrarily invincible child runs off and alerts the guards with you powerless to do anything about it except go back to a saved game and try again!

Yeah, that's what I mean.

First of all, hardly "everyone" is arguing that there be killable children in the game. The more popular idea seems to be either including killable children or abandoning the idea of children altogether as their invincibility outweighs the immersion they add by being present.

The comparison of murder to rape is reminiscent of Godwin's Law. Rape has never been a feature of the the Elder Scrolls. There are not certein NPCs you can rape and not others, and there are not NPCs who rape. This is consistent. Murder, however, is present to the point of there being a faction based on it. If you wish, you can murder most of the urban populations. With the Gray Cowel of Nocturnal, you can do this with near impunity. When discussing the murder of children we are not talking about adding a feature like rape, but only the logical extension of a feature to new NPCs. Penguin_Overlord argues those that value immersion want to take away features to increase immersion, but it is really him and people who want invincible children who are arguing to take features away like murder for moral purposes while completely ignoring how this fits in with the rest of the game. Apparently to these people child NPCs are sacred but once they turn 18 it's ok to shoot them in the back, poison them, and set them on fire. Makes a lot of sense.

That being said, I say keep children out purely to avoid the moral outrage and necessary inconsistency caused by invincible children.
