How do I change my major/minor skills?

Post by Bluehotdog5 »

I wanted to change my minor skill Medium Armor to Heavy Armor, because there's more to choose from and it's better overall.

I tried using the command "showclassmenu" with and without quotes. and it said something along the lines of "Bla Bla Bla Not found on line 1 bla bla bla"

am I suppose to use a prefix or something?

It should be: Enablestatreviewmenu, no quotes or prefixes needed, however doing so will erase all your spells and your immunity to disease related to the Main Quest

For more see Console Commands

Let me check...I'll edit my post in a second...

Strange...I can't seem to get it to work either...I'll continue to fiddle with it for now, maybe someone more familiar with the Console can give you advice...

Open the console -

Console command is enableclassmenu
Change your minor and major skills as you like.
Save the game as a new save.
Exit the game completely.
Start it up and load your new save game.
Right click to check your new settings.

If you don't close the game completely or you check your menus before closing the game down then you won't see your new choices.
I expect this is something to do with the way they're held in memory or in a temp file and they don't really expect you to go changing stuff mid game.

I'll try that next time. Unfortunately I got frustrated and deleted the character completely, My character was a Bard, and I really just wanted a pure Str/End warrior, so I started over. But if I want to change some more Major/Minor skills I'll definitely try that.

Just a small FYI: In the long run, what your majors and minors are is fairly pointless (which is why it always boggles me to hear people ask if a given setup is "viable"). All it does is determine the initial skill level, and how fast it raises, and whether it counts toward levelups or not. Now, if you're doing efficient leveling, you'll need to plan out some miscellaneous skills you can use for the purpose of grinding to ensure +10 levels, and it is a wise idea to start out with a few skills you plan on using as majors or minors (Because failing spells or missing with weapons sucks when you're trying to do a few early quests).

But, in your example of wanting to change your major to Heavy armor due to it having better armor than medium, this is a circumstance where changing major is really not necessary. If you've done a few things in the game, you can likely afford to train to get it up to where you can grind it up the old fashioned way. Once you're already established in the game, in my opinion there's no reason to change your majors/minors, since two skills at the same skill level will function the same regardless of their status as major or minor.

And honestly, medium armor isn't a bad idea in the slightest: Bonemold is as good as steel (Better in a few pieces), and weighs less. Heavy doesn't really start exceeding it until you get your hands on ebony or daedric. Dwemer may be better than bonemold, but by the time you can get your hands on a full set of that, you could probably get orcish armor, which is better, or even indoril (there's a set free for the taking, though it'd probably be a spoiler for me to just tell you)
“Fine day” said the young man.

“Gods!” hollered Zaki, sending the young man flying with a well-placed punch, and dashing away.
