Whoops...

Post by Sephiroth »

I tried to post some links to screenshots of DFGL running now, but couldn't due to my post count. Maybe Dave will post the new topic when he reads it. I did not know the rules had changed since my last visit. Here is the text content of the attempted post:
Well I've been working on it alone for years, and last night at a little after 2am EST, it came to life. The engine currently renders scenes at 640x480 and then blits them to the framebuffer at 1024x768. This causes distortion, but it was a quick fix for a problem I have been trying to solve. The game is running in OpenGL in the screenshots, hence the little blending that is there. The quest system is non-functional at this point, but you can get into the world and explore, interact with NPCs, and fight. Horses and carts are not yet implemented, nor are owning houses and boats. Spells are in development but do not work.
I'll post screenshots when I can.

Since I cannot post links yet and to get my post-count a tad higher so I can link the screenshots and videos of DFGL in action, I wanted to inform people how to locate and view the first in-game footage of DFGL. Simply go to Google Video and search for "DaggerfallGL" and it SHOULD be the only result. I do recomend watching the video at "double size" at most, because the default maximized view blurs it badly. I also lost some resolution when Google converted it from WMV to whatever it uses.

Thanks Magnus, that would be it. I played in 640x480 and Frapsed in half resolution, making it 320x240, but it came out smooth and Showed off a semi-working engine, which is all I wanted to do.

Are you the same guy as that "Xen" or "Xenithar" cat?
Horses and carts are not yet implemented, nor are owning houses and boats.
Then why are you seen riding a horse in the video?

DFGL - A Daggerfall clone for OpenGL?

Post by bsperan »

What is DFGL exactly? It would help to explain what is talked about as I cannot seem to find the original thread that you quote.

This is the Daggerfall section of the UESP forums, so I assume that this is directly related. And you wrote:
The game is running in OpenGL in the screenshots...
So, I assume that you are writing a "DaggerFall OpenGL" clone, hence "DFGL."

Sounds exciting! I'm sure there are many fans who would LOVE to see a clone of DF that will run on XP! (...and perhaps Linux?) There are many Elder Scrolls fans who have fond memories of the game, but have either lost it, traded it away, or with their shiny new XP systems feel that they can't get it to run correctly. But some of us were afraid we would never see a clone because of legal complications...

On the alt.games.daggerfall newsgroup there are no longer many new posts, as most gamers have moved on to Morrowind, Oblivion and others. However, of these few new messages, most of them are about how to get Daggerfall to run correctly on DOS and Windows.

Any website yet? Accepting volunteers?

Post by bsperan »

BTW: I would watch the video myself, except that I'm still stuck with dial-up speed. :( I'll have to wait until I get on the library computers to try it.

I understand that you've only made 8 posts so far and, as a result, you can't post any html links yet. But I do hope that you have a website set up already and that you will post a link soon. (Or update your user profile with a 'homepage'...)

Are you planning to just replace the game engine? Or will this be a full clone? Will there be replacement graphics, sound, or music, or is it all the original?

Anyway, good luck!

Benjamin

PS: Wouldn't this project be considered a 'MOD' of Daggerfall? If so, then perhaps it would better fit in the "MOD-General" area?

This is not a mod, it is an entirely new engine written in C++ with a little C compiled for the 32bit Windows platform. To be honest though, I have not been working on it as much lately for completion, but I am trying to make an online version of it via UDP/IP that allows people to play together. That and I have college and work.

How is your project coming along?
Are you considering making it open source?

Keep up the good work!
