The purpose of Role-Playing Games

Sorry to burst your bubbles guys.
Da_BossMaN69 wrote:Guys, not trying to be a troll here, but before you type the response to this, ask yourself honestly: Is the main object of this game NOT to kill things.

And If you say yes, no offense, but you may have over-looked some key details. Those "RPG" elements that are not about killing things, lead back to Killing. Money? You use it to buy objects, what type of Objects? Weapons, that you kill things with. Homes? Places where you sleep, why? To heal yourself, heal from what? From combat, what is the goal of combat? Yup, you guessed it, to kill things.

Transportation I.E. horses, to travel to areas faster, like towns. What do you do in towns? Get info, what sort of info? Info that leads you to dungeons( aka the slaughter-shacks you go to, to kill things) or to merchants where you go to use your money to :We've been through this. Quests where you don't kill people, for money and we've covered this.

So you see the only things that aren't centered around Killing are conversations (hell even half of those lead back to killing) and finally clothes, which serve no purpose what-so-ever really.

And guys, final question that if it doesn't change you mind, then ok you got me, ask yourself : Would you pick up this game if you could not kill?
No, you are wrong. Role-Playing games are, quite obviously, about Role-Playing. Role-Playing in a fantasy world often involves killing, that's true. But there is much more to it. The point is to feel immersed in a world different than our own. To experience things that cannot be experienced in this one. Killing is a part of that but it is a shallow imitation of true killing. What about all the amazing scenery that most RPGs offer? Do you ignore that? What about the NPCs? Do you ignore them? No, you don't because they are essential for the plot and immersion. Have you ever taken time to decorate your character with something that doesn't buff him? Probably not, seeing that you don't care much about Role-Playing. Others however do that and much much more.

Chillax, broham.

I mostly agree with you. I quite enjoy rooting around shops in ME to find fish for my fishtank.
I'd also submit that some RPGs are playable with little to no combat. Back in the day, I used to play Ultima Online and I had a toon that never went into combat. He made all of his levels and money standing around in town manufacturing goods for players. I had massive contracts with guilds to make them high end stuff and I never equipped anything more than a silly jester's outfit. I say that was a nice role to play with no killing. :)

I'm not sure what this guy is trying to say. First he says combat is not a roleplaying element, then he asks if you would get the game if there was no combat....

Da_BossMaN69 smells like dick.

Seriously, loads of RPG's can be played without killing a single thing. Save the tutorial, you can easily play Oblivion without taking a single life.

Personally I wish there were more games that didn't involve killing things.

I mean there certainly are some, point and click adventure games rarely involve active combat and so on, but still, would be more interesting to see games with different aims other than killing whatever happens to get in your way.

Sid Meier's RailRoads! :D
It doesn't involve any killing and there is no depiction of violence whatsoever. At least not directly. Also, The Sims. Those aren't RPGs though :| But they're still games so I think this post is on-topic.

May I add that the last few times I have played Oblivion have been solely for the purpose of taking screenshots, of living subjects and/or scenery :) .
Is this meant to be witty, informative or deep? I doubt I can manage all three.

Anybody here played Mount and Blade? Me neither, actually, but a friend of mine says he's making quite a good living as a spice merchant, and I can't imagine that a profession such as that involves much combat, except with the occasional bandit. You've got to remember that most fantasy RPGs are set in medieval-style eras, and in those days, especially in Britain, there was no guarantee of any safety even inside your castle walls. You could be set upon by any number of unsavoury characters or creatures at any time. Plus, combat is the quickest way to fill time in a video game. It's difficult to get right, but when done properly it's the world's best stress reliever and stops it being boring.

tl;dr if you've got a game that is by nature set in uncertain times, then it is to be expected that you fight people. Wouldn't most role-playing games feel weird without all the cool killing and stuff?

It's £14.99 on Steam, but that's offtopic. Silly me.

Actually, now that I think about it, Mount and Blade was designed so you could be whatever you want. Oblivion said the same, but in reality all the game mechanics allow you to do is be any kind of warrior you want. That requires killing. Most games aren't designed to let you be a spice merchant, and they do what they do well without that extra design.
