Character builds
I'm interested in what kind of ideas you guys had when creating and building your character. Does your dude (or dudette) focus on melee combat, ranged combat, magic, stealth, a combination of these? Did they start down one path and then add something else later? What kind of problems did you encounter? What kinds of things did other people find difficult that you found easy because of your character?
Just curious as to what other people are doing with this game.

Build
My character is predominantly a melee fighter. However sneak and marksman still play a large roll when fighting, as I think they should for just about any character. Magic skills are leveled fairly high as well, I did that in my spare time, casting cantrips when running from person to person, town to town. This built up the magic skills and allows me to use certain helpful spells to support my character, however I don't use it as a main damage source.
When it comes down to it, my build is really a hybrid of Melee/Stealth/Magic. With the focus on the three being around 60% / 30% / 10% respectively.

My characters usually have some basics in common. Things that I personally like. A warrior/ranger type. Usually a druid. Half-elf or human. Favoured pets are all types of big cats. Wolves are second. Dragons are dreams. Looks are also important. I won't play orcs as they are ugly and I don't use clubs and axes for the same reason.
But first I look for a real person or a mythological/ficticious (sp?) figure to inspire me. Basics done I build the character from the idea I have of the person/figure that inspired me. Then I let her loose and see how she turns out. More than often she surprises me. And each char is a different personality with her own agenda, motives and desires.

I went with a straight-up melee fighter, but he's REALLY good at it. He's a redguard with a custom class that's based on the Warrior but took out some class skills that I found myself not using (I played for a couple of days as a warrior and then started over). Bladed weapons are definitely his thing, and with some magic items his Blade skill and his strength are both at or near 100 (he typically cashes in magic weapons in favor of constant effects, he and I both hate to count things). To get around the fact that I was taking a ton of damage from fast archers, I really worked on his acrobatics and block so I can catch up to those guys and also get around summoned creatures to get at the soft, squishy conjurers behind them. Basically, he likes being right in someone's face when he kills them.
Around level 10, he started wearing shoes instead of boots and working on his sneak skill, and by now his sneak is in the 40s and he loves creeping up behind them and smashing them with a sneak attack with a bladed weapon. Very few things have survived one of those. If you catch him sneaking up on you, you're still probably going to die, it's just going to be a lot more painful.
If there were more roleplaying in the game, I'd imagine that he'd be a no nonsense kind of guy. Not the guy you'd want to get relationship advice from, but if you had trouble and you expected it to get ugly, he'd be the first one on your list of people you'd call.
I suck at naming things, so his name is "The Dude" (obviously a reference), his class is "Mac Daddy", and the only magic item he's created are the "Gauntlets of Hurting People" or something like that that buff his strength.

My breton char Brigitte (as in Bardot) found the Boots of the Footpad that fortify sneak. A magical item worth keeping. Can't remember where I found them though. Maybe they are a random drop. If The Dude likes light armor he'll like those boots too.
Btw.. I have wondered about the Bard class. What can a bard do in Oblivion that is.. bard-like sort of? In Morrowind there are mods that can allow a bard to perform in taverns and such and in NWN the bard can use various instruments and "bard song" as weapons. That would be quite cool. To build a Bianca Castafiore char with a voice that disintegrates weapons, armor and .. almost anything.

....i have a lot to learn!i9ub wrote:[Yeah... Drizzt had me making dual scimitar wielding rangers for a long time.
i have a blade mage: alchemy, alteration, blade, conjuration, illusion, destruction, and mysticism are my 7 main skills
90% magic/5%sneak/ and 5% melee is what i use
ghostwalk at expert illusion bypasses sneak need(1min invisiblilty)
and destruction obliterates the enemies with no need to hit them exept once or twice
did you find someone to teach you dual wield? dual wielding deadric daggers with elemental poison *drool*
p.s. my friend did put elemental poison on daedric daggers not me
Hmm
Sorry to get your hopes up, you can't dual wield in Oblivion. Unless of course you have a mod that allows it. I was referring to other characters in other games.
Even then the off-hand weapon is just a shield with sword model instead of shield model, meaning you can only defend with it. I don't know of any real dual-wield mods to date.
There once was a Prince named Mehrunes
Whose buttocks sounded sonorous tunes
‘Twas an odiferous song
People sang before long
They had enough of his full crescent moons.

After making and testing out a few races I went with a Breton male. I specialized in the class selection on Combat. I used the two attribute bonuses to kick up Endurance and Luck by five points. For my major skills I chose skills that I could control my leveling and to obtain +5 attribute bonuses in the attribute of my choice. The seven Major skills are Blunt, Alchemy, Destruction, Marksmen, Light Armor, Block, and Speechcraft.
I played the typical combat role for most of the lower levels to increase my strength and endurance as fast as possible. The teens were tough and I think that they are suppose to be, so I controlled my leveling and obtained the best equipment that I could for each level.
Now at level 32, most skills are at 100 or more and I have a mix or enchanted Daedric and quest armor and items. I can now play any role I want such as a sly stealthy assassin, a crafty Mage, or a kill’m all fighter.
On a side note the one item that eludes me is that amulet of axes.
