Re: Religion and Philosophy
I am a Christian, a Protestant I suppose since I go to a Church of Scotland Church.
I'm really don't care for pomp and circumstance though, I see Christianity as a personal relationship with God, not a bunch of rituals and sacraments.

Is this meant to be witty, informative or deep? I doubt I can manage all three.

Re: Religion and Philosophy
Bear in mind that Buddhism is divided into two major denominations: Theravada and Mahayana. Pretty much a division between 'orthodox' and 'reformist', respectively.
Recognizing a Buddhist according to only one benchmark is akin to someone incapable of seeing any difference between a Roman Catholic and a Baptist.
Theravada is the older, more rigid school that is very much a philosophy rather than a religion. Mahayana is much more open to regional interpretation and is further divided into a number of sects based on the particular region and population. Those sects may very well be a 'religion' with the veneration of spirits and gods.

I'm a freethinker.
No pansy jokes. lol
I think my views on "religion" came across pretty clear on the other thread. D:
Just clarifying; There's two definitions of religion. It can mean a set of beliefs, and it can mean an institution/organisation based on certain beliefs.
I was referring to the latter.

This. I completely agree.OblivionDuruza wrote:If you regard it as a philosophy rather than a religion, than it is a philosophy and not a religion. I believe that our belief systems are purely our own. Yes we borrow from others, but at the end of the day they are whatever we make of them.

I believe science and religion go hand in hand. We saw the effects of religion without science and learning (dark ages)

Re: Religion and Philosophy
I would postulate that the Dark Ages came about from a catastrophic breakdown of civic society. With the cities falling to barbarian attack, the town-dwellers (unskilled in agriculture) abandoned the sacked towns for the countryside, leading to an economic crisis of too many people trying to work over the same bit of farmland.
There simply isn't enough back-capital to go around thinking about science if the need to fill one's own stomach takes upon an art of its own.

As an out-of-body-like hallucination. LSD does that sometimes.

Some people don't need drugs, they can just jump into the "astral world" whenever they want

Well, LSD was an example. They could simply go into a waking dream state, and it seems to them that they are out of their body, as they have learned to control the dream.Blackfire wrote:Some people don't need drugs, they can just jump into the "astral world" whenever they want

I am an apatheist. Caring about religion just isn't my thing. Philosophically, I believe that nothing we do matters, so we might as well just stop worrying so much.

Now I'm not saying you cannot believe in what you want, but be careful with apathy. It leads to much of the world's suffering.ch00_bakka wrote:I am an apatheist. I'm a Theravada Buddhist, and I think that there's a heaven we can ascend to, but there is no Hell we can descend to. Because we are in Hell. Or more precisely, we are in a Purgatory— right here, right now. You're going to make mistakes, everyone does. But you if look for the truth, you'll get by.

I was raised Reform Jewish, the thing I like about it is that it is EXTREMELY open for interpretation. I dont believe God is a big guy in the sky, but rather the total energy of all living things.
