two arena champions?

how is it, that im arena grand champion, but have an arena champion as a sparring partner? surely thats not possible?

anyone care to explain?

Champion and grand-champion are two different ranks, grand being above.

There's always two champions, one from each teams, but only ONE grand-champion in total.

He could be a Retired Grand Champion. Oryen is a Retired Grand Champion. However, there is not a rank for Retired, so his rank is Grand Champion.

Same thing for Champion. Maybe he didn't think he could beat the Gray Prince, so retired instead. The Battle Matron's Rank is Champion.

It could be that your sparring partner was champion, and didn't think he could beat you, so chose to retire, and be your sparring partner. Then later, once he learns all of your secrets, will attempt to destroy you...

You should ask him.
